The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle | Bestsellers - Books USA Press
Japan's most highly regarded novelist now vaults into the first ranks of international fiction writers with this heroically imaginative novel, which is at once a detective story, an account of a disintegrating marriage, and an excavation of the buried secrets of World War II. In a Tokyo suburb a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife's missing cat. Soon he finds himself looking for his wife as well in a netherworld that lies beneath the placid surface of Tokyo. As these searches intersect, Okada encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists: a psychic prostitute; a malevolent yet mediagenic politician; a cheerfully morbid sixteen-year-old-girl; and an aging war veteran who has been permanently changed by the hideous things he witnessed during Japan's forgotten campaign in Manchuria. Gripping, prophetic, suffused with comedy and menace, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a tour de force equal in scope to the masterpieces of Mishima and Pynchon. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Bailedbailed

I love Japanese fiction. However, I think my dog liked this one more than I did since he tried to eat it. Lol. I hate bailing on books, but I can't go on. Does anyone else love Murakami, but couldn't get through this?

Couple things - for #riotgrams my husband and I love the idea of turning this into an anime series. But I‘m always a little hesitant to want for adaptations too much because of the risk that they‘ll ruin it.

Secondly, this is my all-time favorite book cover. And a fantastic book. Although it takes a strong stomach to get through certain parts. #murakamicultmember

PagesOfKate That cover is fantastic. I'm a little bit of a Murakami obsessive so I may have to track that version down. 6y

#booksbyasianwriters Murakami is Japanese. #readjanuary Did you know if you're in the bottom of a dry well, you can see the stars in the day?!

rubyslippersreads I read that in some other book a long time ago, but never knew if it was true. 7y

Mind officially blown. It took me a year to finish thanks to various interruptions, but I loved it. I'm looking forward to my next Murikami experience.

My favourite quote from 'The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle' ~ "In a place far away from anyone or anywhere, I drifted off for a moment", I love the quote so much, it's tattooed on my arm.?

I'm about a third of the way into this book. It's typical Murakami. Cats, music, weird sex dreams, etc. I loved 1Q84 and this one seems very similar.

I see you fellow Haruki Murakami fans today #translatedbooks 😘😂 (tried blurring out the Twilight poster because that certainly does not apply to this post)

britt_brooke I've *gasp* never read any Murakami. What's a good one to start with? 8y
LeahBergen I had strangers come up to me twice in bookstores while I was inspecting this book. The second instance of gushing finally made me purchase it! (and I ended up loving it, of course). 8y

britt_brooke @Basia @Ambrosnazzy Thanks a bunch! Adding it to my ever-growing TBR. 😁😄 8y
Mamashep Love Murakami but newbies should know not to overthink it. Just go along for the ride! 8y
erzascarletbookgasm Lol at your meme! I think Murakami is an acquired taste! 😄 Either you love him or don't get him. @britt_brooke I would say, either start with one of his non-fictions, or take a dip in his writing style by reading his short stories..eg Blind Woman Sleeping Willow or even South of the Border West of the sun. 8y
ApoptyGina69 I found it among my aunt's vast library and put it next to her bed. 100 pages in and she's loving it! **job done**🤗👍📚💥 8y

JessReads I find it fascinating that so many people recommend starting with this one! I always think of Wind-Up Bird Chronicle as one that's better suited for people once you get to know Murakami's style a bit better. Personally, I recommend Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 8y
Well-ReadNeck @JessReads Ooooh, I would certainly defer to your suggestion. I haven't actually read that one. It's now top o my list. I recommend WOBC mostly because it seems to have all the iconic Murakami elements. Thanks!!!! 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess My first book of his was his running one and I was hooked!🏃‍♀️😀 8y

SaraBeagle Love him! Especially 8y
JessReads @Well-ReadNeck It's great! I loved it, and I also think that it is the best introduction to his work because I found it a bit more accessible than Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I can't wait to hear what you think! 8y
JessicaBates I love him too! I always suggest Kafka to new Murakami readers, but I loved Wind-Up Bird too. 8y
ultrabookgeek @JessReads it's crazy because someone gave me that book and as soon as I was done I was so angry I threw it across the room and HATED it. Then I couldn't stop thinking about it or talking about it and then I realized I was in love lol! Murakami is a tough author to get into but I agree with you that if you can handle Kafka on the Shore, you can go deeper. 8y
DrexEdit I loved wind - up bird chronicle. Norwegian Wood is next on my Murakami TBR list. 8y
bevy ^agreed! I started with wind-up bird chronicle too and that turned me into a total Murakami fan! 😍 8y

As with other Murakami's books, this one is weird yet enchanting. I have a love-hate relationship with Murakami; his fictions are of one flavour but I crave for it once in a while.
Isn't the Japanese version's cover amazing?👆

That night, in our darkened bedroom, I lay beside Kumiko, staring at the ceiling and asking myself just how much I really knew about this woman. The clock said 2 am. She was sound asleep. In the dark, I thought about blue tissues and patterned toilet paper and beef and green peppers. I had lived with her all this time, unaware how much she hates these things.

PNWBookseller85 Such a good book. And it's my all-time favorite book cover. 8y
