Burned
Burned | Ellen Hopkins
Pattyn Von Stratten is searching for the love she isnt getting from God or her family in this novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ellen Hopkins. It all started with a dream. Just a typical fantasy, but for a girl raised in a religiousand abusivefamily, a simple dream could be the first step toward eternal damnation. Now Pattyn Von Stratten has questions. Questions about God, and sex, and mostly love. Will she ever find it? Pattyn experiences the first stirrings of passion, but when her father catches her in a compromising position, events spiral out of control. Pattyn is sent to live with an aunt in the wilds of rural Nevada to find salvation and redemption. What she finds instead is love and acceptance, and for the first time she feels worthy of bothuntil she realizes that her old demons will not let her go. Those demons lead Pattyn down a path to hellnot to the place she learned about in sacrament meetings, but to an existence every bit as horrifying. In this gripping and masterful novel told in verse, Ellen Hopkins embarks on an emotional journey that ebbs and flows. From the highs of true love to the lows of loss and despair, Pattyns story is utterly compelling. You wont want this story to endbut when it does, you can find out whats next for Pattyn in the sequel, Smoke.

A quick YA page turner written in verse takes us into the private life of a young teenage girl. In the span of one summer, she questions her LDS upbringing, discovers her body, lust, and love. All this while trying to survive her abusive father and discovering family love and encouragement from an aunt for the first time. TW/CW: suicide, abuse, purity culture, pregnancy loss. Shown: the fundamentalist churches I grew up in. I am now atheist.

JenniferEgnor This book is banned. It would‘ve helped me navigate things I went through during my adolescent years. I can relate to much of this book. Hormonal changes, wanting to get out of religion and questioning it, being told I needed therapy because I was sexually active, and other purity culture lies; also, moving away from the ‘things/persons‘ that were ‘leading me astray‘. My step father wasn‘t an alcoholic, but he was very abusive. Those parts⬇️ 5mo
JenniferEgnor hit a little too close to ‘home‘ for me. I don‘t think of it as home as it is still traumatic for me. 5mo
Dilara So sorry you went through all this as a teenager, and it's such a shame the ones who need this book the most are the ones least likely to find it locally... 5mo

From the book I‘m currently reading. I don‘t come from an LDS family, but I still come from a fundamentalist one. And I can completely relate to this feeling.

My body is my own. It belongs to no one; neither do I. I am not property. What my body can do does not equal capital for anyone.

TheBookHippie I love these books. They have helped me reach so many students I have mentored. 5mo
JenniferEgnor @TheBookHippie 🖤thank you so much for the work that you do! 5mo
TheBookHippie @JenniferEgnor I recently bumped into a student now 29, this book was the first thing she mentioned. She still has the copy I gave her. Just wow. That was 15 years ago! 5mo
JenniferEgnor @TheBookHippie proof that we need books, that they save lives. We should not be banning books. 5mo

Decided to try Ellen Hopkins again and I was hooked by this story. Starting the sequel tomorrow called “Smoke”. A novel-in-verse about a Latter Day Saints‘ teen‘s life with numerous siblings, an ineffective mom and an alcoholic abusive dad.

Apparently I am now on an Ellen Hopkins kick. Just finished Burned. It was a good book, but not my favorite by her. This one was a little predictable. Still a good read though!

This young adult novel in verse started off a little slow to me but then it picked up and I couldn‘t put it down the last 150 pages. I‘m looking forward to reading the sequel to find out what happens to Pattyn.

Clwojick I love everything that Ellen Hopkins writes, and this duo is my favourite of them all! I just seen your September recap, and had to search your feed until I seen your review. I always wasn‘t to know what others think of this one ♥️ 4y

Ellen Hopkin's Burned presents Pattyn Von Stratton's physical and emotional hardships with her alcoholic Mormon father, while enduring the psychological restraints as a young woman living in her community. After Pattyn's father finds her in a compromising position with a guy, and he sends her to stay with her aunt, where she experiences true love and sex, and rediscovering yourself, regardless of gender and religion.

Live your life right, Pattyn. Love with all your heart. Don't hurt others, and help those in need. That's all you need to know. And don't worry about Heaven. If it exists, you'll be welcome.

This was another solid choice from Ellen Hopkins. I‘m quite the fan so I cannot imagine ever leaving a negative review.

Unfortunately now I have reached the point where I compare her works of literature and was this her best? No.

But this was much, much better than some other pieces of fiction I have read!

Again, I love the format and style.

LoverOfLearning Loved these books when I was younger! I have 2 of them in my bookshelf! I love the writing style. 4y

Ellen Hopkins will always be my true #1, but aside from her my “favourite” authors can really fluctuate depending on what I‘m into at the moment. These are some of my current favourite female authors. #MyTop5 @4thhouseontheleft

TheBookHippie Ellen Hopkins!!!! 5y
alisiakae Mary Higgins Clark...I haven't read her books in years! My step-grandmother loved her books, I used to sit in my grandpa's office and read them every time we visited them. 😍 5y
Clwojick @TheBookHippie right?! She‘s the only author that I hold onto after I read. All other books get passed on. ♥️ 5y
Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft So good! Love a good murder mystery 😍 If you like her, definitely check out Joy Fielding! Specifically Mad River Road, The Deep End, and Whispers and Lies 5y
TheBookHippie @Clwojick I read them all with my daughter we started years ago when she was in 8th grade. Now she‘s 29 we still read them. So good! I can always get teens to read her! 5y

This book was pretty good. i thought it was a little slow after she moved to her aunts house, but then it got better, with twists and turns. honestly i would recommend this book but it‘s not one of her best books.

I'm not a huge fan of writing in verse, so this one was a little iffy for me, but the story was enjoyable and I really felt bad for the main character. However, the ending was a little...off, so I couldn't enjoy it fully.
