They develop a powerful and passionate relationship, but eventually tensions arise when Paul falls in love with a girl and seeks to escape his family ties. Torn between his desire for independence and his abiding attachment to his loving but overbearing mother, Paul struggles to define himself sexually and emotionally through his relationships with two womenthe innocent, old-fashioned Miriam Leivers, and the experienced, provocatively modern Clara Dawes.Heralding Lawrence s mature period, Sons and Lovers vividly evokes the all-consuming nature of possessive love and sexual attraction. Sons and Lovers | D.H. Lawrence

Where was he? -one tiny upright speck of flesh, less than an ear of wheat lost in the field. He could not bear it. On every side the immense dark silence seemed pressing him, so tiny a spark, into extinction, and yet, almost nothing, he could not be extinct. Night, in which everything was lost, went reaching out... So much, and himself, infinitesimal, at the core a nothingness, and yet not nothing.
"Mother!" he whispered- ""mother!"

First DH Lawrence I've read. Astounded at the nuance with which he depicts women.

Brimful Reading Alison MacLeod‘ novel Tenderness at the moment which really illuminates the point you are making 2y

While packing to move, I went through my files and found my 11th grade AP English recommended reading list, prompting me to take Lawrence off the shelf. Only 6 more novels to go! #ListLover, #1001books

My review of this deeply psychological, semi-autobiographical novel by D.H. Lawrence :

None of the characters were particularly likable, yet this book was a great read. There is a slow section in the middle, but it's worth persevering with.

Paul is such a douche canoe. I actually enjoyed reading this (aside from that weird bit of unnecessary racism near the end...) and being thoroughly disgusted with everything Paul Morel did. 😄 I liked Miriam and I felt bad for her. I hated Clara. I‘m glad I read it but it didn‘t blow me away. 😊 144/1,001 #1001Books #TBRBowlOfDestiny

LauraJ I‘ll like any review that uses the term “douche canoe” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 6y

Well, gee...that‘s a fun bit of racism to just slap into the almost-end of a book I was heretofore enjoying...🙄🙄🙄

tokyoseg I had that with antisemitism in some of the classics I was reading 😕 6y
AshleyHoss820 @tokyoseg Ugh! It shouldn‘t surprise me, but it always does. 😕😕😕 6y
HOTPock3tt Geez 👎🏽that does suck that you read almost the whole thing before finding out... (edited) 6y
AshleyHoss820 @HOTPock3tt YES, it does! So strange! Other than that unnecessarily racist Irish nun who showed up for one page, it was a good book. 😔🤬🙄😕 6y

Some classics📚
Trying to work on reading more classic literature and rereading some I read in school.
Does anyone have any must read classics/overrated ones??✨📚
#litsy #reading #books #shelfie #classic #literature #tbr

Centique I loved Lady Chatterley‘s Lover and also The Go Between by LP Hartley is underrated! I didn‘t love To The Lighthouse (controversially!) But I need to give Woolf another go. #alltheclassiclove 6y

somebooksaround @Centique Definitely keen to read Lady Chatterley‘s, I‘d like to read a lot of DH Lawrence! Thank you for the rec! I haven‘t read any Woolf yet, but besides being set on Skye it didn‘t sound that interesting😂 Thanks for the heads up!! :) 6y

"Being the sons of mothers whose husbands had blundered rather brutally through their feminine sanctities, they were themselves too diffident and shy."

I'm going through the book extremely slowly, but it's definitely an interesting read.

Sons and Lovers begins with Mrs. Morel's unhappy marriage to a miner who decides to give her attention to her children. The story then focuses on her second son Paul's personal relationships and how overbearing his mother has become.

I started reading this novel with no expectations and I was surprised at how much I liked it. But if you don't have the patience for superlative yet long-winded writing, you may find this to be quite a struggle.

This is only the second D.H. Lawrence book I've read. I'm a latecomer but I love his books. The family dynamic he depicts in this one-- a woman in an unhappy marriage forms deep (and dysfunctional) bonds with her sons-- felt completely real and true. His characters have their selfishness and self-destructive tendencies but are always human and sympathetic in the end. This book works for a "banned book" in #2017ReadHarderChallenge.

First of all, read whatever makes you happy, no matter what anyone else thinks of it. But if you're looking for some, ahem, passion in your reading perhaps try Lawrence or Waters over the 50 Shades series.

I found this vintage edition (in good shape, too) of Sons and Lovers in our local Little Free Library yesterday! What I've only read of Lawrence is the infamous one, shown right, and that was very long ago.

ValerieAndBooks The weird thing about this picture is that it makes the paperback look much smaller. Actually they are nearly the same size! 7y
saresmoore That's sort of a neat perspective trick! And good find in the LFL! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @saresmoore I agree-- hardbacks are pretty rare in that FML! And I'm still scratching my head on the perspective thing; it was like that pre-filter too 🤷‍♀️ 7y

Another book for English this year. While our in class discussions after made it sound interesting, it just didn't tickle my pickle and I could not focus enough over the summer to sit down and read it.

There's a reason why this book is considered to be one of the best. Lawrence knows how to verbalize indescribable emotions from the stormy to the subtle. He infuses HUGE themes & ideas into a rather bland existence. If you've ever felt insignificant, Lawrence shows you how wonderfully complex and complete your life actually is especially within your most monotonous of routines. It has really opened my eyes and examine my life more closely 🌟10/10

Merethebookgal I've had a copy of this sitting on my bookshelf forever and I really need to read it sometime! 😅 8y
CynCruz23 @Merethebookgal I'll be honest, it is not the easiest read but as someone's who's read it 4 times, it's one of those books that needs your undivided attention and coffee. There's barely a plot 😁 and the characters are infuriating. Have you read anything else from D. H. Lawrence? 8y
Merethebookgal @CynCruz23 I studied some of his poetry back in college and loved it, but I haven't tackled any of his novels. I've heard that it's a difficult read for the reasons you mentioned so that's one of the reasons I keep putting it off...one of these days! 😄 8y
CynCruz23 @Merethebookgal yep agree! It's just one of those books that need the right timing/setting. Listening to it on audiobook was actually helpful since you can speed up the narration. I listened it for free from a podcast that read the whole book 😁 8y
Merethebookgal @CynCruz23 That's awesome! My book club read it a couple of years before I joined, so I don't have that peer pressure to motivate me to read it by a certain time 😄 oh well! Like you said, when the time's right! 8y

Rereading my favorite literary classic, Sons & Lovers, as my first book for #24in48 Read-a-thon 👍 I couldn't resist using the challenge as an excuse to read this life-changing book (for me at least) & not feel guilty for foregoing a pick from my exhaustive TBR pile. This is the 1st book that challenged me with its language, subtext, density, and it's rich, un-likable characters who I love anyways. Sparked the flame for desiring challenging reads

CynCruz23 @brendanmleonard good idea! I'm not into poetry but I've been very curious to read Milk and Honey so it might make a surprise appearance. I thought planning it out would help make me read things that I wouldn't read regularly due to time constraints -> My main motivation to participate in #24in48 😁 8y
