Stone Door | Leonora Carrington

Mehso-so

A kaleidoscopic narrative larded with symbols and references to just about every religion, philosophy, and mystical practice known to man. It felt sort of like a William Burroughs remastering of fables and fairy tales from around the world. I love Carrington, and I appreciate formal inventiveness when it's well-done, but I'm still on the fence whether this added up to anything or was so much performative vagueness (albeit beautifully rendered).

OMG, this was so unbelievable, so overwrought. And the author couldn‘t stop writing about nipples. 🙄At least I‘ve knocked off one #readyoirkobo for September. But don‘t waste your time on this one. @CBee

CBee Omg, well this sounds….. terrible 😅 2mo
Lcsmcat @CBee Yeah, especially if you like Dickinson, Melville, Hawthorn, or Whitman, stay away from this one. 2mo
CBee @Lcsmcat I very much like Dickinson and Whitman 💚 2mo

Pickpick

An odd format, described as a novel but containing much biography and thoughts on the life of a writer. Thoroughly enjoyable mostly but the literary critical segments sometimes get a little convoluted. Definite pick though.

I was intrigued by the intro describing Rosalind Belben's books as hard to read but impossible to forget. After reading this one, I'm not sure I agree with ithat statement. I found this book easy to read. Parts are memorable, but I don't feel it'll be a lingering one for me. Belben writes both plainly and with a poetic quality. Overall, it's a slight pick.

Having opened her short review of English diarists by categorising them as bores, O'Brien proves to be a lively guide to those of us who omit no detail of an anecdote, commenting that those qualities which in person are deadly dull as we have no polite escape, in written form are fascinating as we have the choice of reprieve & of skipping over.
The only diarist I'm inclined to explore further is 19th century governess Ellen Weeton, though her 👇🏼

Bookwomble ... journals look hard to find and a bit pricey if located. Still, another author to hopefully chance upon when browsing 🙂
As for O'Brien, I really liked her voice and she's also now on my radar.
Overall, a satisfying and decorative little book 🩷📖🩷
