"Listening to them, I learned much of what a boy should know, of cars, pistols, heavy machinery, shotguns and love, all of which, these men apparently believed, can be operated stone drunk. I learned that fighting drunk is better than sober because a clear-headed man hurts more when hit. I learned that it is okay to pull a knife while fighting drunk as long as you are cautious not to cut off your own head."

This novel is pitched as "Romeo and Juliet meets Children of the Corn." I love this book, and I kind of hate Romeo and Juliet, so I'm going to encourage you to #ReadThisNotThat. #MayBookFlowers

Although these are both great books, there is a similar storyline, and if I had to choose between them Bitten wins every time!

queerbookreader I'm looking at the one on the right like "in what world is anyone's waist that tiny???????" Am I the only one who was like that 6y
Bookworm54 @lemonlime799 haha this is a very good point! Though I find most cover art has unrealistically proportioned people 😂 6y

While I usually don't like to tell someone what they should and shouldn't read, if you are looking for a fun YA series with some supernatural elements to it, I would definitely recommend the Iron Fae series or the Tiger's Curse series over Twilight. They are both unique, well-written series with characters you want to root for. Several in both series end on #cliffhangers too. #readthisnotthat #maybookflowers

#maybookflowers #readthisnotthat I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I can't be the only one who would rather wait longer or pay more to get the more attractive cover of a book. The top row is the version of the Poor Relation Hotel series I own, the bottom row I'd be a little embarrassed to be seen reading! 😄

LeahBergen I'm with you there. I will always wait for the better cover! 6y

My Name Is Asher Lev | Chaim Potok
post image

Oh, I thought of a better #readthisnotthat! Because of how much I loved Asher Lev, I picked up this other Potok at a library book sale & chose it for my book club without pre-reading. It had none of the depth or beauty of Asher Lev. We all finished Old Men at Midnight wondering what the point was supposed to be, and a little disturbed by the way Potok described women's bodies. My advice: read Asher Lev and skip the Old Men. #maybookflowers

Libby1 My son is called Asher. 🙂 I loved this book. I just hope my husband and I are not at all like Asher Lev's parents! 😬 6y

The Eyre Affair: A Novel | Jasper Fforde
post image

#readthisnotthat is a hard one for me. But then I thought about these three. I think The Eyre Affair and Inkheart both do a better job than The Book Jumper with similar ideas. But... honestly, I enjoyed all three! Just... Eyre Affair the most. I'd also say that Inkheart is the best of its trilogy, and the Thursday Next books weaken considerably in the 4th book, so... maybe there's another read this not that in here as well! #maybookflowers

hlgreenfield The Eyre affair is soooo good! 6y
Blueberry I read 1 and 2 of the Thursday Next series then gave up on 3. I loved all the Inkheart series but 3 was the weakest. 6y

Day 24 #MayBookFlowers #readthisnotthat I didn't dislike 'Eat Pray Love' but I was not wowed by it. I think for a "woman going on a journey to find herself" kind of book, either Alice Steinbach's 'Without Reservations' or 'Educating Alice' are much better reads. ??

UwannaPublishme Totally agree! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Flaneurette Yes! I agree also! 6y
ReadingsByTheC I love these! I re-read Without Reservations every year. 6y

AliBG Yes! She lost the thread of storytelling and got too philosophical after BEES. 6y
