When a Buenos Aires industrialist is found dead at his home in Marivillosa, the novelist Nurit Iscar (nicknamed Betty Boo due to her apparent similarities to cartoon ingenue Betty Boop) is contracted to cover the story. Soon Nurit realises that she is falling in love with the man she has teamed up with to investigate the murder, which complicates matters deliciously. The murder is clearly no random crime. Five members of the Argentine industrial elite, who all went to the same boarding-school, have died. Not everyone, though, is keen on this link coming to light.

A mystery, yes, but also more of a character study. We meet Nurit, her friends, her old lover, a has-been crime writer, and the clueless newbie who is never named other than for his occupation. We view all of their complexities from a cool distance. It is possible to see the trajectory of their investigation and lives but like fate, we just await the happening. Our involvement in the story would not change destiny.

This was a bit of a slow burn mystery/crime novel of revenge, topped off with an unsettling ending. A maid finds a wealthy man with his throat slit, and a journalist, mystery novelist, among others attempt to investigate the murder and uncover a pattern of similar suspicious deaths.

This was a really enjoyable crime story set in Buenos Aires as a the eponymous heroine a former crime novelist, a fading crime journailst and his niave successor combine to solve the murder of a suspected killer in a gated community. Great characters and interactions, humour and good plot with a menancing ending. I really liked the book and my informal #litsyatoz of diverse female writers is going well with bk 2. Happy friday reading everyone

A man is murdered, and the public wants to know why. Enter Nurit Iscar, AKA Betty Boo - a crime novelist who agrees to get closer to the crime scene in order to write about it for the newspaper. The writing here is sharp and clear (once you get used to streams of dialogue with no quotation marks). Mystery isn't a top genre for me but this was interesting. 🕶🗡🌫

A good murder mystery book. The writing was a bit strange since the conversations were written in paragraph form, but once I got used to that, it was enjoyable.

Mehso-so

Another popular book I found meh. The translation wasn't very good, in my opinion. The conversation structure took concentration to figure out who was talking with no quotations, written in paragraphs. The murder mystery could have been really interesting and at times sucked me in, but it was so slow going. Nothing even happened for the first 100 pages. I wish I could read it in its original form. #readharder #readwomen #diversereads #diversebooks

This took a little while because all conversation is within the narrative paragraphs instead of split out with quotation marks, making it a little difficult to follow sometimes. The characters were very well developed and this was an interesting story. I've already picked up another book by the author. So happy to discover this as my #SouthAmericanAuthor for #ReadHarder2017 and #TranslatedFromAnotherLanguage #LitsyRC15 #LitsyChallenge2017

AWahle I noticed a typo in the picture when I posted before and I had to fix it... That's what I get for posting past bedtime. 7y

This was a really strange read to me. I really liked the story, but the writing style was like nothing I've ever seen. Long, long paragraphs full of dialogue but without quotation marks so that I had to really concentrate to understand who was saying what. I'm rating this book a "pick" because of the story.

AWahle It was hard to get used to that style for me too. Loving the story though! 7y

I was feeling a little crappy this week, so I went to the library after work & saw this book...I knew I had to get it. It's not every day that a girl in the book cover looks like me. AND then I got an email from @BookishMarginalia and told me that someone offered to be my secret Santa since my Santa never responded. I couldn't believe it. My heart is filled with gratitude! I don't know who the person is, but thank you thank you thank you.
