Re-read from 1985 🧛‍♂️

Dracula was originally published in 1897. The narrative is related through letters, diary entries, and newspaper articles. It has no single protagonist, but opens with solicitor Jonathan Harker taking a business trip to stay at the castle of a Transylvanian nobleman, Count Dracula. The novel tells the story of Dracula‘s attempt to move from Transylvania to England so that he may find new blood and spread the undead curse.

dabbe I'm doing the Dracula Daily through email where the story is emailed by the date (obviously not the year) the diary excerpts were written. It's been enjoyable different; you're living the story in real-time and are only given that day's diaries. LOVE this novel. 🖤🖤🖤 11mo
suvata @dabbe The Dracula Daily sounds really fun. I haven‘t read it since I was in my 20s. I forgot how fantastic it is. I‘m glad I reread it. (edited) 11mo
dabbe @suvata It's still one of the best reads around Halloween, too, IMHO. 🤩🤩🤩 11mo

Just finished the May 5 entry in the #DraculaDaily readalong. I'm a little behind, but not too much.

I've meant to read this book for ages, and now that l am reading it, it feels so strange. Thought l've already experienced that reading the original might be a surprising experience when such a popular character is involved. I'm enjoying it.

And don't you think that Klaus Kinsky for the 1970s Nosferatu, is a very accurate Dracula? 😜

SamAnne I‘m loving the reread. I love all the vampire renditions from horrific to handsome! 11mo
JazzFeathers @SamAnne l'm not really a vampire enthusiast, but l'm very curious about this book. And l've read short stories by Stoker that l really enjoyed. 11mo

I‘m really embarrassed to admit (horror maven that I am) that this is the first time I have read this. It did not disappoint! Within the Victorian setting and old-fashioned diction were genuinely creepy descriptions and events. The horror of this tale holds up well and made my skin crawl.

Vansa I just read it last week too! I guess there's attention around its bicentennial?!And I thought it would be ridiculous, but it was genuinely frightening, and excellently written. 2y
Freespirit I found it very atmospheric 😱 2y

I have really enjoyed my re-read of Dracula for #ThatsClassic
I hadn‘t realised how much I had forgotten, and how easy it is to be swept away in these little snippets of diaries and letters

15 points for finishing the book and 4 hours of reading for 4 readathons brings me to a daily total of 176 points for #TeamHarkness
My running total for the weekly tally: 6826 points!

I am struggling to fit in much reading this week. I have been so tired from work, and then I have been out to dance class Mon and Weds which has worn me out more than usual! I am starting to flag a bit I think.

BUT today I am back with an hour of reading for the 3 currently ongoing readathons I am participating in. And really, I am not too far off finishing Dracula now! Also working on the weeks word game!

The dog stole most of the bed, and then more specifically MY SIDE of the bed! But I did squeeze in an hour of Dracula in bed regardless ☺️

I am participating in 3 readathons at the minute #Screamathon #CocoTurns50 and #ReadYourWay
Very casual plans for the last 2. Try fit in some reading each day (none yesterday) and finish at least 2 out of the 3 books I have started!

Finished the day with an episode of the BBC mini series Dracula. I started watching this earlier in the year and then got distracted, so never finished it. So it will be interesting to see where it goes!

6 points for this episode, plus the earlier episodes of Kingdom, and 1 hour of reading (20 points) brings me to a total of 58 points for the day. 227 points running total.

#TeamHarkness #Scarathlon #CYOReadathon #Screamathon

Bookworm54 @StayCurious does the scarathlon count as a readathon points wise? I was just counting screamathon and cyoreadathon (and later deweys) 4y

I originally read this book several years ago and found it dry and boring. However, I revisited it as an audiobook and really enjoyed it.

I still didn't find the book to be scary, but this time around listening to the story unfold created a chilling essence as I went on the hunt for the Count once more.
