The Gilded Ones
The Gilded Ones | Namina Forna
The start of a bold and immersive West African-inspired, feminist fantasy series for fans of Children of Blood and Bone and Black Panther. In this world, girls are outcasts by blood and warriors by choice. Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity--and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death. Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki--near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire's greatest threat. Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she's ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be--not even Deka herself.

Rating: 3.5 🌟

A promising YA fantasy that tells of Deka as she works to discover her true self and the truth about those around her. Overall, I loved the developing friendships as they were so genuine and authentic. While not the most spectacular YA fantasy, I still enjoyed it and am convinced to continue the series 📖❤️

Mother/son book group resumes! I loved the author‘s afterword “At it‘s heart, the book is an examination of patriarchy. How does it form? What supports it? How do women survive under it?” All wrapped up in a great, fast-paced story. Whilst this did feel very much a YA book I appreciate I‘m not the target audience, and I still enjoyed it. My 14 year old loved it and if I‘d read it at 14 I have no doubts I‘d have loved it too.

TrishB Ah that‘s brilliant! I miss reading with my daughter! 3mo
JillR @trishb I‘ll admit he can be a bit of a nuisance - we can only read what he chooses and then once he‘s read it he won‘t leave me alone until I‘ve read it too 😆, then disagrees with my opinion 😂. But I love that he does want to share books with me, so he‘s not really a nuisance haha 3mo
TrishB As he gets a bit older it won‘t just be YA though! Something to treasure ❤️ 3mo

I wanted to love this but found it predictable and was mostly a little bored. The pluses are that it has a great female empowerment theme and the main character is very appealing. But it just doesn‘t quite get there. And the cover, while gorgeous, actually isn‘t accurate to the story, which is a little annoying.

Lesliereads There have been a few books that I bought because the premise on the dust jacket was appealing and the cover art was 😍😍- but then the book itself didn‘t live up to my expectations. 4mo

Sadly, the poor writing = so-so rating. The world building is fantastic, I ❤️ the author‘s commentary on religion, but a lot of the book fell flat. Deka is impure & is given a chance at salvation through service & combat for the emperor. She & and the other impure girls must fight beasts, who she has strange powers over. Are they really beasts and can she trust anyone? You can totally predict this if you‘ve read books before. 3/5 stars.

I am uncertain. It was well-written and a good story overall. I am not a big fantasy person. This one was okay once I got my mind around the ‘world‘. Also it was a bit twisty, which I appreciate as I love mysteries and thrillers. I don‘t know though. Overall it was okay considering it is not my usual genre. A definite women‘s empowerment story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

A weekend away meant less reading, but that is no reflection on this ferocious book! A fierce and determined heroine on a voyage of discovery, a world of magics and monsters, a patriarchy that needs overthrowing—it all melds together into a fabulous tale that reads like the birth of a legend. I LOVED it—found it beautiful to read and incisively pertinent to the real world.

The worldbuilding was fantastic. Namina really captured how the different cultures within the world interacted. An overall theme of the book was religion and this religion was very thought out.
I was disappointed with the writing style and pacing of the novel. The writing itself seemed too simplistic. In addition, the pacing was fast.
Plus, Keita was just too perfect to seem like a real character.

Way too bloody/violent for my taste, this story captures you from the very first, sentence/paragraph. A mythical overcoming of the violence done to women and the irrational anger against them. You will love the characters.

What a FANTASTIC read! The Gilded Ones is bold, powerful and utterly gripping. The world that Namina Forna has created is so deeply compelling! I have to admit, I have put off the last 2 hours of the audio for this book. I was nervous, but it was getting good. I do not want it to end, but I have so many questions. I had to renew the loan, I have a delightful dread because the war happening might mean the end of a character I enjoy. Urgh my book nerd heart 🖤

I loved it!! The twist at the end? *chef's kiss*
Deka lives in a world where women are third class citizens, subjected to a purity ritual at 16 yrs old. If their blood is gold, they are subjected to the Death Mandate. A mysterious woman rescues Deka from this fate.
I know some people in the reviews had issue with the gratuitous violence the characters suffered (mostly off screen) but I understand why it was included &necessary for the narrative.

Had no idea that this would turn into a trilogy, and I am impatiently waiting for the rest (even though this was just released). I love the unfurling story and information of this book. I am doing this as an audiobook — I am not sure if mistakes were made. The story is so intense. I am shook!! Maybe it‘s easier as a book, but the narrator is wonderful, she gives the characters life and they scare me. This should not be classified as a YA book. This more game of thrones than hunger games😳. If you like either series - this book is for you. #woc #bipoc #poc #femalelead #ya

Deka has never been accepted in her village, so she is excited about the blood ceremony that will make her an official member. However, her blood runs gold marking her as impure. When a mysterious woman offers her one chance for survival, she abandons her long held dreams for a path she never considered. Full of fast-paced action and intrigue, this YA high fantasy novel provides underlying social commentary with a satisfying story. CW in comments.

🎧 Interested in book 2

Cons: Protagonist is a Mary Sue. Wooden characters. She‘s naive, omnipotent, all of her woes are solved deus ex machina. It‘s feminist, anti-male, no well defined antagonist & she even lands her heart throb.

Pros: Maybe you like the cons & you‘re looking for a tale of pure sisterhood. Predictable is easier. If this is a debut novel it‘s possible the cons will be addressed & improved upon in book 2? Stunning cover!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Twainy And just in case I wasn‘t clear. I liked the book well enough to finish it. The premise is there! A lot needs to be expanded upon & if you‘re looking for a strong naive female MC ... this might be the book for you. With all of the death & torture it felt like the characters & narrator should have been older, I think the author attempts to fix this with the way the gilded ones age but IDK, I think it‘s on the upper end of YA? Try it & let me know! 9mo

I liked the theme of this book. The blurb says: ‘A bold and immersive fantasy, a young heroine fights to save a world that would dare tame her and discovers she is her own fiercest weapon‘.
However I wasn‘t the right target audience for this book. I found myself getting a bit exasperated with teenaged Deka. I‘ll wait until my daughter is a few years older and pass it on to her to see what she thinks.

This is a good start for a series although I have to say the world building fascinates me, but the characters not so much. The women are oppressed to their homes, a servant to men. Bowed to be home and nothing else. Girls have to go through a ritual of purity, being bled by priest. A red blooded girls are pure, gold blooded girls are demons, and they are almost unkillable.
This book is about rebellion and the raise of girls and women 🤺🤺
