Empress of the World
Empress of the World | Sara Ryan
12 posts | 12 read | 18 to read
Nicola Lancaster is spending her summer at the Siegel Institute, a hothouse of smart, intense teenagers. She soon falls in with Katrina (Manic Computer Chick), Isaac (Nice-Guy-Despite-Himself), Kevin (Inarticulate Composer) . . . and Battle, a beautiful blond dancer. The two become friends--and then, startlingly, more than friends. What do you do when you think you're attracted to guys, and then you meet a girl who steals your heart? A trailblazing debut, reissued with an introduction by acclaimed author David Levithan, and copious back matter, including three graphic novel stories by Sara Ryan (and artists Steve Leiber, Dylan Meconis, and Natalie Nourigat) about the characters.

Happy Pride Month, Litsy! 💕📚🏳️‍🌈🎉

I'm SO excited to read as many new to me Queer books as possible this month!

The tagged book is special to me because it was the first book I read as a teen that featured a bi girl and made me realize that I wasn't alone! One of the reasons I became a librarian was to help create safe spaces for young people to be themselves and find books that can help empower/validate them! 💕 #PrideMonth #PrideMonth2021

Tonight was such a great night! 💕 In the donation bin at the library I found this book! This is the FIRST book I read as a teenager that featured a bisexual protagonist and a positive f/f romance! It was the FIRST book that made me feel like it was okay to be me, that I was not alone. 💖 I can't even describe how much this book helped me and I'm so glad to own a copy now, all these years later! 🏳️‍🌈

Books save lives. They really do! 📚💕

MissAimz_55 Yes they do! And I‘m glad to see more and more lgbt representation in books and I look forward to continuing to see more . #lgbt #pride 🏳️‍🌈 4y
Branwen @MissAimz_55 I totally agree! It's such a beautiful thing! When I was a teen there were barely any lgbt books at all and now there are lots more, with more and more coming out each year! It makes me so happy! I'm so glad teens nowadays have lots of options with books that can help them feel safe and understood! 📚💕 4y
Deifio I am so glad you found this book that means so much to you again! 😍🤗 4y

Branwen @Deifio Thank you so much, friend! It's such a little thing, but it has made me so unbelievably happy! 🤗 4y
TrishB That‘s so cool 👍🏻 and yes, books are so important for representation. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly That is wonderful! I read this book in college and liked it a lot, but I think I would have LOVED it if I‘d read it as a young teen. 4y
Meaw_catlady Aw! I need to read this! I have been looking for good f+f romance ! Books do save lives! And it‘s nice to know you‘re not alone 4y
HOTPock3tt If ONLY I could‘ve read a book when I was a teenager to let me know it was ok that I was bisexual!!!! I grew up in a community where it was not ok to be anything but straight (don‘t we all?! 😓) some kids found out and I was picked on. I switched schools to escape it. I also grew up at a time when household computers weren‘t prevalent so I NEVER got to see representation of anyone bisexual like me. (edited) 4y
HOTPock3tt Thank you soo much for posting and you‘re right: books save lives. Although I grew up and accepted who I am as an adult, I still appreciate seeing representation!! 🏳️‍🌈 I added this to my TBR. Thanks soo much for posting @Branwen and thanks @wife for sending me the heads up on this post. ♥️♥️♥️ (edited) 4y
ValerieAndBooks Stacking. My daughter (21 yo) identifies as bisexual and she and her girlfriend have been together two years 💜 4y
Branwen @TrishB I agree! 😀 @Clare-Dragonfly It is such a perfect teen book! 😍 @Meaw_catlady I'm going to email you sone other really great f/f romances! 😀 @ValerieAndBooks Whoo hoo! That's so fantastic! That makes me so happy! 💕 4y
Branwen @HOTPock3tt Friend, first of all I just want to say that I'm so sorry you didn't get to see representations of yourself during your teen years. 😟 I feel you. I also grew up in a small town (which was also uber religious and close minded) where it was not okay to not be straight. I really don't know what I would have done if I hadn't discovered this book and a few others at the library. I wish you could have had that too! *hugs* 💕 4y
Branwen @HOTPock3tt I can't even...like it's so hard to describe what it felt like when I discovered this book as a teen. It was like someone shining a light on my heart and saying, YES. YOU MATTER. 🤗💕 4y
HOTPock3tt @Branwen Thank you soo much, friend!! 💞*Hugs* I‘m just grateful to have this representation at ALL... even now. I‘m so happy this helped you during the very difficult teenage years and it warms my heart to see more bisexual representation in general: books, webseries etc. So that hopefully more people won‘t feel alone growing up and will realize it‘s perfectly ok to be EXACTLY who you are! 🤗🏳️‍🌈 (edited) 4y
Branwen @HOTPock3tt Yes! It really makes me happy and gives me hope that more and more books with great lgbt representation will keep coming out! 💕 4y

Tonight's meal pairing (inspired by @MrBook ) - oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes, peas, Chardonnay, and Empress of the World. All wonderfully delicious 😋 I clearly have a lot to learn about picture taking and food pairings, as I had a gorgeous, all encompassing picture that has now been cropped.

Loving this book about a bi summer romance, though!

Yamich49 I really enjoyed this book! Glad you're liking it so far. Bi romance FTW!! 7y
Bookzombie If you are using an iPhone (I don't know about Android), you can set your camera to take a square picture and it's the same size as Litsy and Instagram. It helps with the cropping. 😁 7y
JessReads @Yamich49 Yes! It was so good! Any books featuring bi characters are my weakness, but especially great bi YA 💜💜💜 7y

Perfect, adorable #queerbook to begin my 2017 reading. A happy first romance that is still relevant and wonderful 15 years after publication. 💗

Agreed! I've always thought it a weird word and much prefer "queer" as it seems to encompass more (for me at least!). But it is nice to see bisexuality named and described openly and accurately in a book. ??

ReadingEnvy You might be interested in a book I started but didn't finish (l found it surprisingly academic for the title, wasn't the right mood) 7y
EllanaRose The importance of representation 7y
mischa I prefer queer too, but I find it easier to describe myself as bi to people who aren't particularly well-versed in all our various identities! 7y

saresmoore I love this! I'll admit, I've never thought much about the word itself, but now I'm pondering the weirdness of so many of our human "labels". Also, @EllanaRose , that book sounds great! (edited) 7y
Yamich49 @ReadingEnvy Oooo thanks for the rec! 🤓 7y
Yamich49 @EllanaRose Yes! Representation is so important! Thanks for the rec - looks right up my alley! ❤ 7y
Yamich49 @mischa Right? It's definitely depends on the person and how much explaining I'm willing to do at that moment. 😆 7y
Yamich49 @saresmoore Right? We definitely have a lot of different labels we use and it's funny how they vary based on who you're talking to as well. I noticed when I was coming out to family members that it was a weird word and I felt weird saying it - that may have just been the scariness of coming out as well! 7y
saresmoore @Yamich49 Yes! Both my dad and my best friend identify (albeit loosely, since the term is so limiting) as bisexual. My dad has never actually called himself anything other than my dad, even though he's introduced me to each of his partners. My BFF just said, "Sar, I'm bi." My response was, "Sam, I know." So probably the scariness made it feel much weirder than it really was! 7y

I couldn't find a book in my collection with one of those typical #headlesscovers where you see a woman's whole body except her head. So instead, have a cover that is mostly just hands! Empress of the World is a gentle read about a girl who goes to a summer camp for academically smart teenagers and falls in love with another girl. I read it several years ago and enjoyed it a lot. #YA #LGBTQIA #LGBT #photoadaynov16

BookBabe Rather looks like the girl on the right forgot her pants! 😂 Sounds like a cool book though! 7y
juliannebenford @BookBabe it does a bit! You can juuuust see the top of her sweater. 7y
