Bi
Bi: Notes for a Bisexual Revolution | Shiri Eisner
12 posts | 7 read | 3 reading | 43 to read
Depicted as duplicitous, traitorous, and promiscuous, bisexuality has long been suspected, marginalized, and rejected by both straight and gay communities alike. "Bi" takes a long overdue, comprehensive look at bisexual politicsOCofrom the issues surrounding biphobia/monosexism, feminism, and transgenderism to the practice of labeling those who identify as bi as either ?too bisexualOCO (promiscuous and incapable of fidelity) or ?not bisexual enoughOCO (not actively engaging romantically or sexually with people of at least two different genders). In this forward-thinking and eye-opening book, feminist bisexual and genderqueer activist Shiri Eisner takes readers on a journey through the many aspects of the meanings and politics of bisexuality, specifically highlighting how bisexuality can open up new and exciting ways of challenging social convention. Informed by feminist, transgender, and queer theory, as well as politics and activism, "Bi" is a radical manifesto for a group that has been too frequently silenced, erased, and deniedOCoand a starting point from which to launch a bisexual revolution.

Mehso-so

I bought this book 10 years ago when it came out and struggled to get into it. Finally made it through, but most of the info was stuff I‘d learned in that decade gap. While it wasn‘t my favorite, this book helped validate some experiences I‘ve had, like “compulsory bisexuality” or being asked/expected to participate in threesomes or multi-partner sex. Great for someone who‘s starting out or has some knowledge.

This book was dense! However I learned so much and was VERY invigorated when I finished it.

My haul from Firestorm in Asheville, NC! Only one book this time because, well... did you see my other hauls? Regardless, this bookstore holds a special place in my heart, in part because it‘s my first queer (and feminist, anarchist, vegan etc) bookstore, and in part because it‘s just awesome. I never wanted to leave. I‘m bound and determined to go back (and try not to buy out the whole store, seriously, I wanted everything) #ncbookspt3

A bunch of the rad #BisexualBooks from the LGBTQ2IA library I co-run in Vancouver. It's free for anyone to get a library card and check out great books like these ones (if you live in the area, of course!). I've read 5 / 8 of these and want to read the other 3 soon!

josie281 Thank you for sharing!! Adding all to Mt TBR!! 6y

Getting my activist on! This book is such an interesting insight into a sexuality which is seldom spoken about. On a grey day-off, this was a great start to my day.

ReadingEnvy I'll be interested in your thoughts on Bi... I started it but I'm feeling a bit bogged down by the constant stopping for definitions etc. I'm hoping it gets into a more readable rhythm. 7y

John Scalzi, I didn't expect to see you in here! I love that Eisner gives him a nod for working to engage men in discussions of feminism and privilege

Eisner has this amazing way of reframing stereotypes as opportunities to disrupt cultural norms. It's a fascinating rhetorical perspective and it's giving me all the bi pride warm fuzzies

Happy #Bisexual Visibility Day, Littens! While representation for the LGBTQ community at large is lacking, bisexual people in particular are growing up with barely any reflection in works of fiction. Think about it-- what was the last book you read with a bi main character or side character? Actually, tag them! I'd love to know 😊
