The bestselling author of "Encyclopedia an Ordinary Life" returns with a literary experience that is unprecedented, unforgettable, and explosively human. In the ten years since the publication of her beloved, groundbreaking "Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life," #1"New York Times"bestselling author AmyKrouse Rosenthal has been quietly tinkering away. Using her distinct blend of nonlinear narrative, wistful reflections, and insightful wit, she has created a modest but mighty new work. Why the title"T extbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal"? Because the book is organized into chapters with classic subject headings such as Social Studies, Music, Language Arts, Math, etc. Because "textbook" is an expression meaning quintessential, as in, "Oh, that wordplay and unconventional format is so typical of her, so textbook Amy." Because for the first time ever, readers can further engage with a book via text messaging. Because if an author s previous book has"E ncyclopedia"i n the title, following it up with a "Textbook"would be rather nice. Not exactly a memoir, not just a collection of observations, "Textbook Amy Krouse Rosenthal"is an exploration into the many ways we are connected on this planet andspeaks to the awe, bewilderment, and poignancy of being alive."

Quirky, charming and interactive book. I wanted a bit more, but still fun to read. Felt like talking to an old girlfriend.

Amy Krouse Rosenthal was an even bigger (& smaller) & even more beautiful soul than I knew. Her memoir confirms this. Reading it reminded me of something Sylvia Plath wrote in her journal: “Living with him is like being told a perpetual story: his mind is the biggest, most imaginative I have ever met. I could live in its growing countries forever.” What must it have been like to live in her world, day after day, & not only for 32 (or 317) pages?🌈

JoScho Hey lady! Surprise I am your partner for the witch swap. It said it was delivered on the 10th. Did you get it? 3mo

Part of me wants to frame these words & hang them.

I could do a series.

This selection; then Merricat‘s “Melody, Pegasus, Gloucester” (is that tempting fate?); & finally, Mary Oliver‘s “One, Wild, & Precious.”

“About my midlife crisis. I did not get a sports car... I did get: weepy, chronically weepy. I wouldn‘t describe the origin of my tears as “Boo-hoo, I‘m so old,‘ but more, ‘Oh my, here I am, living, and I would like to keep on living, preferably perpetually‘... I didn‘t exactly have a midlife crisis. I had a midlife cry-bliss.”

Working on my Major Author/Illustrator project for my Children‘s Services & Materials class, & reading the tagged. I was supposed to focus on an author I don‘t know very well. I might be cheating a little. I mean, I don‘t know *everything* there is to know about Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Can one person truly ever know another? 🤔🤓

The first time I read this little book, I posted about a contemporaneous experience with serendipity, which Amy loved as much as I do. I‘m listening to the audio now (which is wonderful) and got to this part. Not 20 minutes before, I read an article about the 25th anniversary of Shawshank 😮 Image from the PDF that accompanies the audiobook.

I read this on paper and loved it but listening to her read these words, written entirely before she was diagnosed with the ovarian cancer that would take her life at 51, is something else. If you haven‘t read her Modern Love column, You May Want to Marry My Husband, you should. But have the Kleenex ready before you start. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2017/03/03/style/modern-love-you-ma...

Pick. Pick. Pick. This is the 2nd Amy Krouse Rosenthal book I‘ve read & her second & last “grown-up book.” She died a short time later. I feel like sobbing because her writing is both so real & down to earth that I feel like I just lost a friend. But I also feel like she‘s the type of person whose family would say, “Don‘t cry. She would want you to be happy.” It is our loss that we only have 2 books from her but we are richer for them.

Book 125

monalyisha This is on my list! Her NYT “You May Want to Marry My Husband” *destroyed* me (& I love her picture books). I‘m so happy to see a glowing review. 🌝 9mo

Lovely - breezed through it but enjoyed every moment. Parts feel like prose, parts feel like poetry and parts feel like confessions between lifelong friends. The indescribable Music section might be my favourite, just for the laughs, but pick this up, you won‘t regret it. Highly, highly recommended 😊

The amazing light Amy Krouse Rosenthal passed away in March 2017 at the far too young age of 51. The above page is from her memoir Textbook so any Litsy people scrolling past, to honor the spirit of this amazing writer: I‘m choosing to give it to you.

❤️❤️❤️

kgriffith How incredibly touching. Thank you for bringing this into my world today 💜 2y
kgriffith Also, looks like you‘re an ereader and a paper reader — do you think (aside from not having the actual page to tear out in this case) anything would be lost by getting the ebook vs paper? I‘m trying to pare down my physical library, and Litsy isn‘t helping 😋 2y
CarolynM Thank you. I like the way she thinks❤️ 2y
See All 8 Comments
GlassAsDiamonds @kgriffith *wrong* person to ask (well, maybe not...). I‘m dedicated to physical books, to the extent to shipping them around the world as we move but I bit the eReader bullet for books and magazines that simply aren‘t released in India, for free/ discounted BookBub Books and because Amazon India or the post and delivery services here damage *everything*. I have found it hard to contextualise depth (page count) and miss fonts. I also miss the 2y
GlassAsDiamonds @kgriffith experience of holding a book, turning the pages and since I use bookdarts, pulling one off a shelf to find passages I‘d marked. I suppose it‘s a depth of interaction I find missing with eBooks. I mainly use the kindle app on an iPad because I hate the page tuning effect of the e-ink kindles use, sends me cross eyed & I do find them all more of a strain on the eyes than a 📚. The majority of my reading is still physical books. 😊😊 2y
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM 😊 It‘s a lovely book - I know already it‘s going to be a pick 😊 2y
GlassAsDiamonds @kgriffith a further note on eReaders. I read on an old iPad but I live in India at the moment. While they‘re common at home, it‘s an extremely pricy luxury item here & not something I could read from with safety all over India. Perhaps an old kindle would be fine but for all they‘re praised for travel, many don‘t consider how much of a target the obvious luxury goods make you in various places, even large cities...not a problem with a paperback! 2y
kgriffith @GlassAsDiamonds That makes sense. Thanks for such a thorough and thoughtful response! 2y

I adore what I call Book Serendipity-those little reading moments when, for example, something you never heard of pops up in two books in a row. Or something you just read about makes its way, out of the blue and completely unexpectedly into your real life. In fact, I just commented about it on Litsy yesterday. So it's a bit of a Meta Book-Serendipity moment when this book, that I randomly started reading today, has a whole bit about Serendipity ❤️

I hadn't put two and two together.
.
I remember catching a glimpse of a headline the other day... something along the lines of "dying author writes dating profile for husband", but I didn't read the article because... I didn't want to be sad and yet... one post on my seldom-checked Facebook feed talked about a football player thanking an author battling ovarian cancer and then... (continued ⬇)

Librariana I clicked on the link. And that's when I started to make the connections.
.
I've read most if not all of her books for children. The above and another are on my TBR... and I am sad that the world loses good people all the time. I am sad for her husband and children... her family. But I am in awe of her grace and humor... her strength... the beauty of this gesture. The article definitely tugs at your heart strings 😔
3y
javadiva This isn't fiction?? 3y
Librariana Unfortunately, it's not, @javadiva. I wish it were. She's in hospice care 😔 They diagnosed her with ovarian cancer... in 2015, I want to say the essay stated? And she talked about how quickly all their plans changed. The tagged book was, I believe, published in 2016. She wrote this as a way to help her husband transition into a future relationship... 3y
Librariana @javadiva - Clarification: she wrote the piece in the NYT as a way to help her husband. The book was written before her diagnosis and then published in 2016. The other book of hers that's in my TBR is 3y
