These are currently my choices for #winter, no definites here. The prompts on this post and the following 3 go from left to right, top to bottom. So the tagged book is for 'any book in a trilogy', and American Sherlock covers 'proper noun in title'.

A solid 3.5 (rounded up to 4).
I love a good plot twist and this book had a quite a few of them. The main characters were fun and endearing. And the bad guys kept were memorable.

Sidenote: I highly recommend the audiobook because there are parts of the story that very slow and I can only imagine how boring those parts are without voice narration.

Dear Mr. Carr,

I really enjoyed The Alienist, so I‘m a little concerned about all of the negative reviews on this one. Despite the lack of glowing praise, I‘m curious enough to find out about this story for myself. Fingers crossed. 🤞🏼

The main story of the crime and the relationships between the characters were pretty good, but I felt like the subplot with the giant governmental conspiracy was ridiculous and unnecessary, and made the whole thing far too long.

The only interesting aspect of this book was that the main character, Dr. Jones had a pet cheetah! Nearly 600 pages of torture! I only finished because it was a Book Club read. As it turned out, I couldn't finish in time for the meeting. I didn't attend because I did not want the ending revealed. Read his book, The Alienist and it was a first rate thriller! Run as fast as a cheetah from this one! 😬

New Book Club read! Don't know what to expect!

This was right up my alley...I like Caleb Carr's take on criminal profiling and a crime that needs to be solved. The characters were a great fit with each other. There was a good use of humor. And most important, a cheetah! 🎧

So there I was minding my own business, enjoying some Caleb Carr, when suddenly he throws in a piece of rubbish that has now totally ruined the book for me. I wasn't expecting a protagonist with a prosthetic leg. I have one too so that was kind of cool.
But the situation he describes is such nonsense and so improbable that I'm hopping mad (pun totally intended) 🙄 Now I can't take any of the story seriously. Not offended just disappointed.

Took my LFs (Little Friends- I work as a Nanny) to the library today. My happy dance in the New Book section prompted one of my charges to rush to the craft table and whip me up a new personalized bookmark for the occasion 🙂

Having loved his early books so much, I was so disappointed in this one. Had a hard time getting through all 597 pages and ended up skimming a lot of it.
The premise was good I just never connected with the characters. But it does finish letter C in the #litsyatoz challenge

I am having a hard time getting into this after 90 pages but since I never give up on books, I will stick with this one huddled under a blanket on a freezing cold NY day.

I'm actually ALMOST finished with Surrender New York. I've been trying to finish it for like six months.

Wishing I could skip the party I was invited to tonight....and like a good book nerd, just read.

I love Caleb Carr. The Alienist is one of my favorite books of all time. However, I never really noticed how verbose and...for lack of a better word...Sherlockian his writing is when reading The Alienist or Angel of Darkness. Those books take place in the past and somehow the language fit. In this new book, set in modern times, the language is more noticeable and almost distracting though. Especially since I tend to read when sleepy.

Starting this now. Very excited to have it.

Part one of today's audible haul . . . They've got a great sale on past deals of the day, and I had two credits I used on non-sale items. Excited to listen to all of these.

I gave it three days and had to give it up. Sorry Mr. Carr, this was just not for me.

Guys. I've been struggling with this today. Caleb Carr is one of my favorite authors, but this book....so bloated and full of nonsense like this - "We entered a quiet chapel of dreary tragedy, centered on a nave of heartbreak." I've been reading all day and have only made it to page 66. I want to throw it at the wall.
