Making Books: A guide to creating hand-crafted books | Simon Goode and Ira Yonemura
8 posts | 3 to read
This is a modern, stylish and practical guide to the traditional craft of bookbinding, written by the founders of the London Centre for Book Arts, a destination workshop space that attracts visitors from all over the world. Accessible enough for complete beginners, while full of inspiration for those with more experience, this is the ultimate guide to making beautiful books by hand. Starting with an introduction to the bindery and a useful inventory of necessary tools and equipment, youll also learn about different paper types, and special finishes such as cloth coverings, headbands and ribbon markers. Youll then find clear step-by-step instructions for six different hand-made book types, from simple pamphlets and concertinas to more elaborate multi-section bindings. Each project includes ideas for variations, resulting in over 20 different possible outcomes. There are also details about more advanced techniques and specialist bindings, as well as handy layout and design advice. A combination of practical and inspirational photography will guide readers clearly through each stage of the process, while showcasing the unique results that can be achieved and offering an exclusive peek into the workings of the authors studio.

So - I‘ve not read much this as I‘ve been making books instead! I have walked 44.7 miles, kept to my eating goals most days and listened to bookish podcasts every day in my commute to the Bindery.

On the final day of my Book Binding Sumer School I made a solander box (clam shell) to house the books I made. It had to be custom measured to fit all the books exactly so they wouldn‘t wobble around and get damaged ! I think I might have been holding my breadth after 9 hours of making - when I checked that everything fitted! I‘ve never measured so much in my life!

Samplergal So beautiful! You‘ve really done a stellar job. So fun to create. 5y
Mitch @Samplergal thank you. I was surprised just how lovely they turned out! 5y

Five days book making with Simon Goode at The Bindery ( his book is tagged and amazing for easy to follow instructions to beautiful things!) - and I made two hard backed journals with fancy end papers and foil blocked fabric covers, concertina books and lots of different variations of Japanese stitch binding. Had an amazing week! Need to improve my handwriting now before I start to write in them!

SharonAlger I need this in my life. I like to write in beautiful notebooks, but it can be too expensive, sometimes. This would be a fun compromise. 5y
AmyG Wow. Sounds like an unforgettable course. Amazing. 5y
JacqMac These are beautiful! And how fun. 5y

Just starting construction of my Solander Box - it‘s custom made to exactly fit all the books I‘ve made in my 5 day bookmaking summer school that ends today. We‘ll that‘s the theory. Only time will tell if I‘ve measured correctly!

Crazeedi Look at you go! 👏👏 mighty fine!! 5y
Mitch @Crazeedi Thanks - I was exhausted but the end of it! 5y

Very proud of today‘s stitching! I‘ve just cut down 56 pages of paper to size with a knife and stitched them together to make a book block. Now going to add a case, header tape and bookmark!

Day 3 of my bookbinding week with Simon Goode - Japanese stitching might not be my thing! I was concentrating so hard I think I genuinely forgot to breathe! #bookishproblems

Samplergal It looks great though. Great job! 5y
Mitch @Samplergal Thank you! We‘re learning to do everything very traditionally so cutting 48 sheets of paper to size with a knife was a challenge before I even got to the stitching! 5y

So this week I‘m on a weeks summer school - bookmaking for 5 days with Simon Goode. Just finished Day 2 and so far I‘ve made a 5 hole pamphlet, a Japanese Stab Binding book, 2 concertina books and a single section case binding which I then foil blocked! It‘s intense and I‘m focusing so hard - but having such a blast! Simon is such a good teacher.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This is amazing!! 5y
TrishB What fun 😁 5y
Mitch @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @TrishB I‘m really enjoying it ! I‘m not a very precise person, I‘m more of a ‘make it up as I go along‘ type - so it‘s a challenge! But the things I‘m ending up with are actually very nice! 5y

LeahBergen How wonderful! I‘ve done a couple of (very low key) bookmaking classes and they are so FUN. 5y
Mitch @TheAromaofBooks it‘s really good - I‘m now looking at spines and header tape in a whole new light! 5y
Mitch @LeahBergen really enjoying the week - although exposed spine Japanese stitching today was a challenge! 5y
