Potent Pleasures | Eloisa James
19 posts | 19 read | 18 to read
Eloisa James breathes new life into one of the most popular fiction genres with her highly original debut novel Potent Pleasures, a charming, vividly peopled Regency romance. With an uncanny wit and an eye for the whimsical, she unravels a complex--and often hilarious--chain of events inadvertently set in motion by a young woman's first taste of forbidden pleasure. About to make her debut in London society, Charlotte Calverstill, beneath the lavish gowns and manners of a well-brought-up young lady, yearns for a taste of freedom. Pushing propriety aside, one evening she sneaks out with a friend to attend a masked ball, and there meets a devastatingly handsome stranger who relieves her--not against her wishes--of her virtue, then vanishes. Years later, when they meet again, the rogue does not remember Charlotte. But she certainly remembers him; she has since learned not only his identity, but also a titillating piece of gossip about him that is sure to set society abuzz. The intricate web that a now-wiser Charlotte weaves to exact her due ensures justice for some and great merriment for all. Taking the Regency historical to fresh new places, with artful smoothness and irrepressible humor, Eloisa James delivers a winsome tale of first love and life's unexpected surprises. From the Hardcover edition.

I finished this audiobook tonight. I have mixed feelings. I'm not sure if it is with the storyline, or the narration. Either way, I loved the heroine in this one! 😍

A little bit problematic at times, but still thoroughly enjoyable. I loved the depth of the characters and their interactions. Some of the plot was a bit too much for me, but I still read it cover to cover! Eloisa James is always a delight.

Today‘s prompt for #150PnPCoverParty is #regency 😃

My most recent Kindle acquisition is Potent Pleasures, because when I feel like some historical romance, @EloisaJames is my go-to... and this one is set in the regency period. ❤️

julesG Is it part of one of her series? 6y
sprainedbrain @julesG Yep, it‘s the first in the Pleasures series, which I believe were her first books. 😃 6y
CrowCAH Yes, Eloisa, is quite the Regency writer! ☺️ Currently Reading Seven Minutes in Heaven. 6y
sprainedbrain @CrowCAH I have that one on my shelf... signed by Eloisa almost a year ago, but I want to read all of the Duchess books that came before it first. I‘m so far behind! 😳 6y
LeahBergen This sounds wonderful. 💕 6y

I wasn't familiar with @EloisaJames work before starting this book even though I've seen many of her books reviewed on Litsy. Numerous characters are mentioned in this story - sisters, brothers, friends, and so on - so many that I wondered if I picked up a book that was in the middle of a series. I later learned this is the first of a trilogy. I enjoyed the story, liked most of the characters and will definitely read more of this author's work.

EloisaJames Goodness, you started with my very first book—back when I had never heard of point of view and yes, gave everyone a sibling—I‘m thrilled you‘re willing to try another!! 7y

Today's author spotlight: @EloisaJames , the warmest author I've met! Now, this is awesome. By day, she's Fordham professor Dr. Mary Bly, lecturing on William Shakespeare; by night, she's NYT-bestselling romance author Eloisa James. She had an alter ego through 2005!!! AND she'd disguise herself with the glasses-contacts switch-up! She pulled a Superman! Then a Tony Stark coming-out with the profs. My hero!👌🏻👌🏻 #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

CrinolineDream One of my favorites! 💕 7y

I enjoyed this book immensely. I like when characters have a chance encounter, shake up each others lives and slowly find their way through life's obstacle course to each other. Love the scene in the end where older and wiser characters revisit the beginning for the happy ending. #romantsy #litsy

"Floppy poppy." ? I talked about this book much more than I normally do with my guilty pleasure romances because I wanted to share this phrase. (I also love the conversations where those involved are striving to be proper but determined to be honest.)

Yes, it's a historical romance and has a happy ending. Guilty pleasure and thoroughly enjoyable. Told from a different perspective than I'm used to, and with more detail - detail about how these people lived, not just their clothes and hair. So many characters introduced and even those we met only once had a backstory, which kept the story richly alive but could be overwhelming. Picked up based on recommendations for this author; I'd concur.

EloisaJames My very first book and I'd never heard of point of view. Not only do we meet all those people but we're in their head as well! Ah well, Live & etc 7y

A couple of bookstore hauls this week. And bonus, the bottom three were only $3 apiece!
There just isn't enough time to read everything I want to!
(Also, it's going to be between 50 and 60 degrees here in Wisconsin for the next week. What the...?!? It's nice to have nice weather, but this just feels wrong and means allergies and mold will be waaay out of control for the rest of the year.👎🏼 I'm having enough migraines already, don't need help!)

Kangaj1 I am in WI too! 7y
AlaMich Same here in Chicago. Although I have to say I am not hating 65° and sunny today. ☀️ 7y
[DELETED] 3216391035 This Wisconsin weather is too crazy! Spring fever will be even worse when it turns back to winter in March...👎🏻 But I'll take the ☀️while I can! 7y
LauraBrook @MelissaJ @AlaMich @Basia Isn't this crazy warm for us upper midwesterners?!? Wish it didn't bring out the cruisers tonight, though, it's been loud for an hour and it's not even that late. Here's hoping our return to normal winter weather won't be too painful, and let's enjoy the sunshine while we can! 👍🏼😎 7y
kspenmoll Since winter is too cold for me, enjoying CT's thaw - been in 50's/40's. Wonderful to dress down! Spring isn't close enough! Midwest seems to have colder/hotter weather than we do. 7y

⭐⭐⭐

I think this quote explains how I felt about the hero. I had to knock a star off because of it. The story was well done and wonderfully written but the hero was just a huge jerk. I felt the heroine was too forgiving too quickly. The real hero was Charlotte's best friend. This was the author's first book and other than the hero was enjoyable.

blossy I plan to read Duchess In Love next time I read one of her books. 7y

Hello nightshift book order (and your 5 friends not visible in this picture). I got so depressed after watching the presidential debate on Wednesday I went on a book buying spree. Oops. Still an @EloisaJames book is never a bad idea... #romantsy

EloisaJames I applaud that response to the debate (naturally)! I hope you love the book. 7y
Verity @EloisaJames I'm very excited. It's part of your back catalogue I haven't got to yet because it's been hard(er) to get hold of in the UK 7y
EloisaJames @Verity I've had 3 different publishers in the U.K. I think my current publisher finally bought my first three. 7y
Verity That explains a lot @EloisaJames - like why we only got 3 (4?) Desperate Duchesses over here and I had to get the rest in US mass market! 7y

When adding a well established author to my to be read list for some reason I like to start with their first novel. I think I'll give it a try after my current book I'm going to need something a little fun.

#romantsy #osrbc

EloisaJames I wrote that so long ago--and yet it's some readers' favorite still. I poured emotion into it--I hope you love it! 7y
blossy @EloisaJames Thanks I'm looking forward to it. It's my next historical romance to read. 7y

A soap-operatic little romance. It's not my favorite Eloisa James book, but a fascinating study in how authors change and grow over time. One thing I really loved was the way minor minor characters got real arc--Mall and Chloe were two of my faves. One thing I really didn't like was the fits of rage the hero had, both of which were emotionally abusive and so extreme as to make the HEA a little unbelievable.

EloisaJames That was my first book. I remember that my idea was to make the hero do something so awful that his wife would never take him back. 7y
AliBG @EloisaJames -- I read it was your first, and that was part of what made it so interesting to me. (And mission accomplished. The heroine took him back but it was harder for me!) 7y

I used to hate giving up on a book, thinking that to finish it was at least that I owed to the author who spent so long writing it, but not anymore. I've read a few Eloisa James and though they were pretty good. As the advert goes 'does what it says on the tin'. This one, for me, did not. Onwards.
