The Spanish House is a hotch potch of designs, Georgian, Gothic and Moorish, as if whoever started it had simply got bored. It has long been known to locals as an architectural folly, and is now nearly derelict to boot. When its reclusive owner dies intestate the Spanish House is left to his city-dwelling niece. For Isabel, recently widowed, the house is a potential lifeline - the only hope she has of providing for her two children without having to sell her most treasured possession. But for neighbour Matt McCarthy, the house is revenge - on the family who ruined his father. For his wife it's the key to the perfect family life, while a struggling property developer sees in it a whole new future. As desires clash and intertwine, lives and loves are demolished - and the Spanish House becomes a true folly indeed . . .

First read of the author was quite surprising. The blurb by the publisher is a bit misleading because the book deals with so much more. A funny, emotional and critical novel with a sweet ending for Isabel.

A so-so for me, during all the first half of the book, the main character is useless and I can never feel much sympathy for someone who lets anyone direct their life. The second part is better even if conventional.
Do not read while starting construction jobs on your house or buy a house (it did not help my buyer's anxiety...)

This is my first JoJo Moyes book which has inspired me to read more of her work Intriguing storyline kept me turning pages especially once past the first few chapters.. There was some predictability but also some surprises to be had. I liked the variety of personalities and the Poe-type flair it had (you may see what I mean ifyou read it). Overall a solid 3-1/2 stars for me. Now the question is, which JoJo Moyes book do I follow with?

terryduncan5719 After You, is a solid book. There are three is this series. The last one has a predictable ending. After I finished that I was disappointed, because it seemed like the author was making a movie ending and she was hoping someone would buy movie rights. But I did enjoy all of them and will add this one to the list. 2y

Definitely not my favorite Jojo Moyes novel. I found most of the characters spoiled and/or really unlikable so I didn‘t really care what happened to them. There were a few good characters but unfortunately they were only bit players. I enjoyed the narrator, though, and did listen to the end just to see how it would all pan out. 🌟🌟 💫

Isabel Delancey has always taken her gifted life for granted. But when her husband dies suddenly, leaving her with a mountain of debt, she and her two children are forced to abandon their home and move to a crumbling pile in the country. With the house falling down around them, and the last of her savings fast disappearing, Isabel turns to her neighbours, not knowing that her mere presence there has stirred up long-standing obsessions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Did I write about hoping Jojo Moyes won‘t disappoint❓ Well, she did. At last by my expectations. If I hadn‘t known her I might have rated “Pan” but it‘s weird, the pages kind of fly away under your fingers _even_ _though_ you constantly doubt that such girlie, depended characters like Isabelle exist. Matt and Byron (!) are too much cliché – and I also don‘t think that how Isabelle changes is realistic. Half a page and her efforts are of avail❓?

Lite väl många elak/egoistiska personer i en och samma bok.... Lite besviken blev jag få jag hade höga förväntningar på denna boken...

What are some of your favorite songs or genres to listen to while reading or to get into a reading mood? I‘m rebuilding my reading playlist from scratch, since Spotify is dead to me.

SassyBookworm I need something relaxing to listen too, so I listen to ‘Spa Radio‘ on Pandora. It reminds me of the music that plays when I get a massage. Just relaxing & peaceful 😌 6y

This was fine. When you read a Moyes novel, you know you are in for a good time. I had figured out the ending early, but that is what I want from a book like this. I liked how Moyes tried to write about different ways of being a mother. I just thought she could have done more with it.

Reviewsbylola This is one of the few of hers I actually haven't read! 7y
Kalalalatja It is pretty good. It is one of her earlier books, and you can feel that a little. But if you like Moyes, I would recommend it 😊 7y

Another lovely book by Jojo Moyes. A good story, perhaps a little predictable in some aspects but still very enjoyable. Would make a good holiday read.
