Less Than Zero
Less Than Zero | Bret Easton Ellis
33 posts | 95 read | 24 to read
Set in Los Angeles in the early 1980's, this coolly mesmerizing novel is a raw, powerful portrait of a lost generation who have experienced sex, drugs, and disaffection at too early an age, in a world shaped by casual nihilism, passivity, and too much money a place devoid of feeling or hope. Clay comes home for Christmas vacation from his Eastern college and re-enters a landscape of limitless privilege and absolute moral entropy, where everyone drives Porches, dines at Spago, and snorts mountains of cocaine. He tries to renew feelings for his girlfriend, Blair, and for his best friend from high school, Julian, who is careering into hustling and heroin. Clay's holiday turns into a dizzying spiral of desperation that takes him through the relentless parties in glitzy mansions, seedy bars, and underground rock clubs and also into the seamy world of L.A. after dark.

(Day 21 - #FeelSoHigh)

*Everybody is feeling high at the drug- and sex-fueled parties that are circumambient in Clay‘s world; i.e., the world that Easton Ellis paints for us in his debut novel, tagged. It‘s a fairly stultifying existence: house parties at million-dollar homes featuring kids shooting heroin, having one-night-stands, and watching snuff films. It‘s the kind of exotic party that was de rigueur in the 80s, unfortunately.

Cinfhen We were just talking about this movie Friday night😁 4mo

gradcat @Cinfhen What did you think of the movie? I remember not liking it very much, but I had read the book before, and that often taints the experience. 4mo

The prose is terrific (both calm and skilled), as I‘ve come to expect from Ellis, and the tone relentlessly chilly. This author is so good at evoking a mood—even when he was barely out of his teens, apparently.

Event-wise, there is some absolutely evil stuff that happens here, which I‘m surprised gets overlooked in most of the reviews I‘m seeing; it‘s easy to see this book as a precursor to “American Psycho.”

“I haven‘t seen you around,” I told her.
“Yeah, well, I haven‘t been around too much.”
“I met someone who knows you.”
“Who?”
“Evan Dickson. Do you know him?”
“I‘m going out with him.”
“Yeah, I know. That‘s what I heard.”
“But he‘s fucking this guy named Derf, who goes to Buckley.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh,” she said.
“So what?”
“It‘s just so typical.”
“Yes,” I told her. “It is.”
“Did you have a good time while you were here?”
“No.”
“That‘s too bad.”

Not original but I love the Bangles' version of the song. Not so good book or movie. Very, very 80s in the worst way.

I kinda hated this book. It‘s quite disturbing. But on the other hand I couldn‘t put it down. This is the obvious choice for #hazyshadeofwinter since The Bangles covered the Simon & Garfunkel original for the movie soundtrack when the book was adapted to film.🤓 #WinterWonderland

I read "Less Than Zero" when it was first published in the UK simply because it takes its title from one of my favourite Elvis Costello songs, and then I was encouraged by reading that the protagonist has a poster of the cover of a favourite Costello album, "Trust". Then... what a catalogue of empty, shallow characters leading pointlessly empty and shallow lives. Surely this was "The Horror" whispered of by Conrad's Kurtz... ??

#booksandmusic

Bookwomble More than once I closed the cover in disgust as Ellis seemed to wallow in this nihilistic celebration of vacuous, alienated, consumerist culture, only to see his judgement of what he was portraying: Less Than Zero. That kept me going to the end, though it's a journey I'm content with having made just the once. It is, for all that, an unflinching indictment of the vapid horror that neoliberalism, in all its rampant '80s glory, leads to. 1y
Leftcoastzen That he became such a literary darling upon publication adds an exclamation point to all the points you made above!👍 1y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen Word! I haven't (don't need to?) read anything else by him. From the brief interview extracts I've read, I'm still uncertain as to where he positions himself with regard to the worth of consumer/capitalist society, and I just come back to the title of this book and hope it's that. 1y

"I don't want to care. If I care about things, it'll just be worse, it'll just be another thing to worry about. It's less painful if I don't care.”

This is the very depressing and controversial story about rich and bored #CaliforniaGurls and boys in the 80s. It made a big impression when reading it. #heatofjuly

MrsMalaprop Oh my. I read this on my husband‘s recommendation last year. Soooo depressing and awful 😩👎. 1y
Cinfhen I remember the movie version ~ so dark!! 1y
Reggie I remember reading an interview with Christina Ricci back in the day where she talks about not taking roles because of how they portray girls. She said she turned down one because the opening scene is a girl having drunken sex and then throwing up on the guy and she just didn‘t need roles like that in her life. It turns out it was from a movie based on one of this guy‘s books. I remember thinking mental note: maybe not read him. 1y
BarbaraBB @Reggie Ricci is a wise woman I guess. Easton Ellis portraits men and women alike as onedimensional beings and I don‘t think you miss out on much, not reading him. 1y

Well. That was different from Dickens!! Loved the first person narrative that B. E. E. does so well but very dark and depressive. Back to some Austen to lighten the mood a little I think!

What a depressing story. The lifestyle of rich teenagers in Los Angeles in the 80s. Drugs, sex, violence, they are doing it all without feeling anything. Clay, the storyteller, watches all that happens, seemingly without participating actively. But neither does he stop anything from happening although he at times feels the need to cry. But there's no one to talk to, no one who listens. Even his shrink talks mainly about himself. #1001

At least I can say I've read an Easton Ellis, and that it's likely that I'll never read another.

zsuzsanna_reads I've only read the Rules of Attraction, because it is set at the same fictional college as Donna Tartt's Secret History, with overlapping characters (I think the authors are good friends) and that was good. 3y

Conflicted beyond words. I really disliked this - I did not warm to the characters or the subject matter or painfully loose plot. I felt like it managed to be both horrific and repetitively dull. However I do think this is pretty much exactly what Ellis set out to accomplish, and therefore that skill, especially in such a young writer needs to be recognised. Still won't read again & some scenes nauseated me.

"I don't know," he said. "Just driving."
"But this road doesn't go anywhere," I told him.

"What does?" I asked, after a little while.
"Just that we're on it, dude," he said. "

My love for this novel might stem from the place I'm at in my life, being a recent high school graduate. Although I come from a very different background (east coast, and not affluent), there are times you find yourself drifting through life like Clay, wondering where your innocence went and where you go from here. I haven't seen the horrors that Clay has, but I'm sure if I did I wouldn't react the way he does, which is not much at all.

I couldn't decide between two T titles, so I put both on the list. X was tough, but luckily there are smart Littens out there who had already scoped out the Wharton short story. the Z choices weren't as limited as I expected, but I picked out Less Than Zero for the trainwreck factor. I crunched some numbers and was happy that the majority of the titles are by female authors. #LitsyAtoZ #readingchallenge

Not exactly a new favorite, but this book is excellent at creating an atmosphere of unease. The entire book is one long anxiety trip, quick-paced and oddly uncomfortable, full of mundane details and a sense of both dread and panic. And it *really* escalates towards the end.

I can only take so much whining from rich white kids about how they're rich and white. The 5.5 hr book was too long IMO.
