The Gate to Women's Country
The Gate to Women's Country | Sheri S. Tepper
13 posts | 25 read | 37 to read
Classic fantasy from the amazing Sheri S. Tepper. Women rule in Women's Country. Women live apart from men, sheltering the remains of civilization. They have cut themselves off with walls and by ordinance from marauding males. Waging war is all men are good for. Men are allowed to fight their barbaric battles amongst themselves, garrison against garrison. For the sake of his pride, each boy child ritualistically rejects his mother when he comes of age to be a warrior. But all the secrets of civilization are strictly the possession of women. Naturally, there are men who want to know what the women know! And when Stavia meets Chernon, the battle of the sexes begins all over again. Foolishly, she provides books for Chernon to read. Before long, Chernon is hatching a plan of revenge against women!

After a long weekend away for my baby bro‘s wedding🎉, I was completely exhausted with no attention span yesterday. I picked this up & was immediately reminded of why I‘ve read it so many times. It‘s not a happy book but it brings me joy every time I read it.

I‘ve been focused on new/new-to-me books the past few years (#blameitonlitsy); looking forward to shifting gears a bit this summer with more rereads! 📚

#naptimesreads #bibliophileproblems

lauren.lerner Related tangent: would anyone be interested in a reread challenge of sorts this summer? I‘m considering creating one for myself and would be willing to share what I come up with if there‘s interest from y‘all. 6mo
Leftcoastzen I have this in the stash...need to read ! What‘s great about it ?I want an excuse to move it up the stack. 6mo
llwheeler This book has been on my tbr for ages, guess I should bump it a little higher! And I agree with being focused on new (to me) books, there's quite a few books I've been thinking of rereading. I might be interested in a challenge 6mo

Stavia lives in Women‘s Country years after The Convulsion. Men live outside the city, training to be warriors, allowed in only during carnival or if they choose to leave warrior life. All is peaceful until Stavia meets a boy who wants all the secrets of Women‘s Country, no matter the cost, secrets that will shake the foundation of all Stavia knows. This wild, morally complex work of late 1980s feminist sci-fi will give you much to mull over!

underground_bks Only one warning—there is a homophobic sentence early in the book 😒 7mo
underground_bks @ShyBookOwl yeah. It‘s very cis-sexist too, but it is interesting, especially as an artifact of 1980s feminism 7mo

ShyBookOwl @underground_bks that makes sense for 2nd wave. I'm still interested 7mo
underground_bks @ShyBookOwl I‘d love to know what you think! I didn‘t really know much about this before I started but I saw on the Litsy page for it that people read it for Women‘s Lit classes—I‘d have loved to have read it in a class context! 7mo
ShyBookOwl @underground_bks me too! I minored in women's studies but didnt read this particular book. 7mo
underground_bks @ShyBookOwl I wish I could take a Women‘s Studies class that was focused on feminist sci-fi as a way of understanding the development of feminism! 7mo
underground_bks @ShyBookOwl UM HECK YEAH just stacked it! 7mo
ShyBookOwl @underground_bks 👍🏼😊 7mo

One of my favorites that I could (and do) read again and again. I think this is out of print, though, so I have a hard time recommending it to friends.

I've seen a lot of Littens reading The Handmaid's Tale for the first time or as a refresher. I've always felt like The Gate to Women's Country is a good companion book for HT. Another story of oppressed women, I found it moving and #Thoughtprovoking.

Lacythebookworm I picked up a copy of this on the recommendation of my boss. I need to finally read it! 3y

RIP Sheri S. Tepper. This was a life changing read for me in my teens. See also Beauty, Gibbon's Decline and Fall, and The Family Tree, oh, The Family Tree. So many great books. She will be sorely missed.

RIP Sheri S. Tepper, my favorite sf-f author of all time. I read her book The Gate to Women's Country in a freshman seminar on Science Fiction and it was the literal gateway to my love of science fiction. She was a kickass woman and an amazing writer. If you haven't read her yet, definitely put her on your list.

RanaElizabeth Sad to hear this. I tried and bailed on The Gate to Women's Country a while ago but will always appreciate its early efforts into feminist sci-fi. 3y
Chessa @RanaElizabeth I also loved Grass, After Long Silence, and The Family Tree! She's got a lot out there for sure. I know a lot of folks liked Beauty, too. (Not my fave of hers, but still good). 3y
Chessa Oh! And The Margarets! 3y
RanaElizabeth Perhaps it's time to try again with Grass, at least. 3y
silverlocusts Oh no, that is terrible news. I loved Gate to Women's Country. RIP. 3y

Fun Photo Friday: My faaaave subgenre is feminist science fiction, and in my opinion no one does it better than Sheri S. Tepper.

Soubhiville I love this book! 3y
BookishFeminist Yessss love this subgenre 🖖🏼 3y
Chessa @Soubhiville It's so good! I first read it in a freshman interest scifi class in college and was just blown away. Have you read anything else by her? 3y

Chessa @BookishFeminist We should start a book club! I'm always looking for more feminist SF! :D 3y
BookishFeminist @Chessa We totally should! I'm going to run a feminist/social justice book club on here since Emma Watson's is now every other month- I really want to incorporate feminist sci fi w/social commentary (like Olivia Butler etc). But I would seriously love a sci fi/fantasy/kickass women club as well! 3y
BookishFeminist @Chessa For real we want to set something like this up I am happy to co-host with you. Think of all the Bitch Planet discussions we could have! 3y
Chessa @BookishFeminist OMG seriously! That would be rad!!! 3y
BookishFeminist @Chessa Yes, seriously! Wanna exchange messages via Goodreads? 3y
Chessa Oh good idea! I was just wondering how to communicate more directly about this! 3y
Soubhiville I haven't... Which would be a good next choice? 3y
Chessa @Soubhiville Well, if you like fairy tale retellings, Beauty is good. If you like more creepy stuff, Grass is excellent. The Family Tree totally blew my mind, and The Margarets was pretty amazing. 3y
Soubhiville Awesome, I'll just add them all then! Haha! 3y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I loved Grass!! 3y
Chessa @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com Grass was super creepy! It's almost been long enough that I could read it again. 3y

Incredible story about a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity appears to have regressed to a medieval-style of society...but appearances can be deceiving. Very interesting concept, beautifully rendered. Tepper is one of the greatest women-focused sci-if writers I have ever read.
