An Ideal Husband | Oscar Wilde
Pickpick

This was a delightful read. I very much enjoy Oscar Wilde's plays. He had such a way with words and unabashedly criticizes society but also adds so much humor and irony.

First glass of wine after Dry January, enjoying this wonderful 1990s movie version of Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband. So many good lines but the above is one of my favorites.

I sought out this play after it was favourably mentioned in a book about colours—Oscar Wilde was fond of heliotrope and mauve. In my library‘s Hoopla database, I found a full-cast recording by LA Theatre, with Jacqueline Bisset playing Mrs Cheveley. Amusing entertainment: 19th century blackmail shenanigans, lots of witticisms, but not a lot of feminisms.

Bibliogeekery Great review! Not a lot of feminisms #truestory 😂😭 5y
Lindy @Bibliogeekery I have to keep reminding myself of the time it was written when I read stuff like this. 5y

lord goring: She doesn‘t turn out to be a spy, then?

sir robert chiltern: Oh! spies are of no use nowadays. Their profession is over. The newspapers do their work instead.

lord goring: And thunderingly well they do it.

lord caversham: No woman, plain or pretty, has any common sense at all, sir. Common sense is the privilege of our sex.

lord goring: Quite so. And we men are so self-sacrificing that we never use it, do we, father?

DivineDiana Yes, Lord Goring! 👏🏻 Gorgeous cover! 5y

I love Wilde‘s wit. This is less laugh-out-loud funny than The Importance of Being Earnest, but it has (somewhat) more substance: about what truly makes a good marriage, and how real love forgives, and not idealizes. A lighthearted, fun read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Under the weather today and I don‘t feel like reading, so I‘m watching a classic on tv instead. I love the period costumes/decor in this movie along with the humor. #spookyoctober

Does it count if I laughed so hard I cried? 😂 ~ An Ideal Husband is one of my top favourite books on many levels! ~ September Photo Challenge catch-up ~ #Day8 #MadeMeCry #bookphotochallenge

Linsy I loved this one too! I read it in an Oscar Wilde class and couldn't get enough. 😍 8y
bmsddk @ABookishPixie An Oscar Wilde class?! Genius idea -- how was it? An Ideal Husband is my favourite of all the poems, short stories, and plays I've read from him so far ☺ What is your favourite work from him? 8y
Linsy I loved my Oscar Wilde class! One of my favorite college memories. We read a lot by him, but my favorites were The Importance of Being Earnest, Salome and The Picture of Dorian Gray. If you're looking for something gothic, Dorian Gray is the best kind of creepy. What else have you read by him? Do you have any more faves? 8y

bmsddk @ABookishPixie I've read most (maybe all?) of his short stories, several poems, a few essays, An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Earnest, Lady Windermere's Fan, and A Woman of No Importance. I've loved everything from him so far ☺ But his comedies are my favourites, haha. I'll add The Picture of Dorien Gray to my list, thanks! What style of writing and storytelling does he use for PDG? Which modality is your favourite from Wilde? 8y
Linsy The Picture of Dorian Gray is nothing like his comedies. Super gothic and makes you think deeply. I loved the creep factor. If I had to choose, I'd probably have to pick Earnest as my favorite work by him -- I am always up for one of his comedies. However, his cultural criticism is super fascinating and I just love Dorian Gray. Such a great read to pull you in and make you think. 8y
bmsddk @ABookishPixie Sounds like The Picture of Dorian Gray will make for a good October read! His plays are my favourite technique from him as well. Have you seen any of the movie adaptations of his work? 8y
Linsy @bmsddk I've only seen The Importance of Being Earnest, which I loved. You?? 8y
bmsddk @ABookishPixie I've seen The Importance of Being Earnest (the one with Colin Firth...that piano scene! 😁), which was an incredible adaptation of the play. And I've seen An Ideal Husband --hilarious!!! Lord Goring was posed more as the main character in the movie because he was in on the most schemes. It was so well done, highly recommended. Have you heard much about it? Do you know of any other adaptations? 8y
Linsy @bmsddk No, I haven't heard of that adaptation, but now I'll have to find it! I loved the play. I don't know of any other adaptations of his work, but you're making me realize I need to go find some!! 8y
bmsddk @ABookishPixie Yes, it would be fun to see if anyone has adapted his other works! An Ideal Husband is the 1999 version with Rupert Everett (who is just as hilarious as he was in The Importance of Being Earnest!). 8y

Listening to some good dramatizations of Oscar Wilde's plays today. An Ideal Husband and A Woman of No Importance were both so entertaining. Love the wit and social commentary, and I'm amazed how much of it still applies today.

LibraryLydia The plays are fun to read but there is nothing quite like seeing them live. I saw a professional production of Ernest last year and practically cracked a rib from laughing. The same troupe is doing Ideal Husband this year and I can't wait to see it! 8y
Teenta This audiobook has a terrific full cast, but I keep hearing the audience laugh at weird times and knowing that I missed some expression or physical humor that the actors are doing. I would love to see any of these performed. 8y
