The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate | Jacqueline Kelly
Calpurnia Virginia Tate is eleven years old in 1899 when she wonders why the yellow grasshoppers in her Texas backyard are so much bigger than the green ones. With a little help from her notoriously cantankerous grandfather, an avid naturalist, she figures out that the green grasshoppers are easier to see against the yellow grass, so they are eaten before they can get any larger. As Callie explores the natural world around her, she develops a close relationship with her grandfather, navigates the dangers of living with six brothers, and comes up against just what it means to be a girl at the turn of the century. Debut author Jacqueline Kelly deftly brings Callie and her family to life, capturing a year of growing up with unique sensitivity and a wry wit. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book and the winner of the 2010 Bank Street - Josette Frank Award.

I read this when I was younger and it was such a good book. Although I don‘t remember exact details, I remember I was fascinated about it and learned how women were forced to live in the past. It‘s very informative while still being interesting.

This book is a good introduction to how life has changed for women over the years and the concept of women‘s rights. I like how it has the story from a child‘s perspective. The imagery is great in this story.

"The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate" by Jacqueline Kelly. I have to say this was an interesting book. I'm not really into science and nature stuff but this book was good. This book is about eleven year old Calpurnia Tate in 1899 Texas. Calpurnia is a very curious young girl who has 6 brothers. So you can certainly imagine what crazy things she has to deal with. Calpurnia and her curious mind go on a journey of all that science and nature has to offer

Dbenford Through her many questions about green and yellow grasshoppers that lives in her backyard. Calpurnia begins to form an unbreakable bond with her grandfather. I found 2 different links that I thought would be fun to do in the classroom https://creeksidelearnjng.com/evolution-of-calpurnia-tate/ and dbp.theatredance.utexas.edu/content/evolution-Calpurnia-tate. The UDL I chose was 3.3 (Guide information processing, visualization and manipulation) 6y
Dbenford The ELL strategy that I chose was 17 (Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions) This book also won a Newbery award. The strategies that you could use for this book are IR, LC, AS, and GR. #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y
DrSpalding I have added this book to my stack. This would be an excellent book to use to encourage STEM professions being that she wanted to become a scientist. Excellent summary. 6y

When I first started this #audiobook I was ready to abandon it within the first 20 minutes. I'm glad I didn't. The story about 11 year old Calpurnia takes placein Texas at the turn of the century. That is 1899-1900. For this reason sexism and slavery are common place. This is what turned me off in the beginning, but Calpurnia is not settling for what society, or her mother, think a girl should be. Her relationship with her Grandpa is extraordinary

I read this to my 6 and 8 yr old daughters. I have mixed feelings about it. The story was entertaing and the writing was good. Calpurnia is a likeable, relatable character. I could have done with less of the gender-role crisis though. I mean come on, it was 1899. But we loved the family dynamics and there were several lol moments, which I love when reading to my girls. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ E for #LitsyAtoZ #readalouds #kiddielit

Today was full of "life" things so I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked to. But I read this beautiful book. I love you Miss Calpurnia Tate ?? The ending was good, but it left me wanting more. I'm so glad @Peddler410 let me know there are other books with her. I want her to go and do amazing things!! The last 40 or so pages I was yelling and clapping and hugging my puppies. So many great feelings.

I own so, so many books, but very few with silhouettes on the cover, I guess. So I took this image from google because it was a library book that I already returned. :) Books like this are why I love reading challenges. I don't think I would have picked it up on my own, but it fit a category, so I read it. And I loved it. If you have never done a reading challenge, I highly recommend it! #silhouettecover #seasonsreadings2016

I am doing a few reading challenges this year, and books like this are one of the reasons I am so very glad that I am. I probably would not have picked up this little gem otherwise. One of the challenges had an item - "Read a book recommended by someone you just met." A patron at the library told me I should read this one. I'm only about a quarter of the way in, but it is great. A twelve year old girl in 1899 becoming interested in science.

I read this with my 9 year old niece in our weekly book club. Set in 1899, it centres around the precocious and curious Calpurnia Tate who has a passion for the natural world and a distaste for gender norms. I'm seeking recommendations for books or series for two girls (6 and 9) for a road trip.

Bibliogeekery They've already read all of Harry Potter, the Mysterious Benedict Society and Lemony Snicket. It's a two week trip with lots of driving so I want to find some good titles to keep them enthralled. Any thoughts? 8y
