Thanks for the fun #ISpy @erzascarletbookgasm these are some silhouette covers. Interestingly both Calpurnia and Flavia are lovely child characters 🙂
@Centique @merelybookish @readordierachel feel free to share some covers of the sun, the moon, the stars, or any celestial body if you'd like 🌞🌙⭐
"The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate" by Jacqueline Kelly. I have to say this was an interesting book. I'm not really into science and nature stuff but this book was good. This book is about eleven year old Calpurnia Tate in 1899 Texas. Calpurnia is a very curious young girl who has 6 brothers. So you can certainly imagine what crazy things she has to deal with. Calpurnia and her curious mind go on a journey of all that science and nature has to offer
When I first started this #audiobook I was ready to abandon it within the first 20 minutes. I'm glad I didn't. The story about 11 year old Calpurnia takes placein Texas at the turn of the century. That is 1899-1900. For this reason sexism and slavery are common place. This is what turned me off in the beginning, but Calpurnia is not settling for what society, or her mother, think a girl should be. Her relationship with her Grandpa is extraordinary
I read this to my 6 and 8 yr old daughters. I have mixed feelings about it. The story was entertaing and the writing was good. Calpurnia is a likeable, relatable character. I could have done with less of the gender-role crisis though. I mean come on, it was 1899. But we loved the family dynamics and there were several lol moments, which I love when reading to my girls. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ E for #LitsyAtoZ #readalouds #kiddielit
Today was full of "life" things so I didn't get to read as much as I would have liked to. But I read this beautiful book. I love you Miss Calpurnia Tate ?? The ending was good, but it left me wanting more. I'm so glad @Peddler410 let me know there are other books with her. I want her to go and do amazing things!! The last 40 or so pages I was yelling and clapping and hugging my puppies. So many great feelings.
So manny giggles are being had over here. Delightful book 😊
Starting a little earlier this morning for the #24in48 One of my students asked for book recommendations so I have been trying to read more middle grade/YA lately. I saw some posts on Litsy about this one that sounded delightful. So I'm happy to be reading it this morning 😁
I own so, so many books, but very few with silhouettes on the cover, I guess. So I took this image from google because it was a library book that I already returned. :) Books like this are why I love reading challenges. I don't think I would have picked it up on my own, but it fit a category, so I read it. And I loved it. If you have never done a reading challenge, I highly recommend it! #silhouettecover #seasonsreadings2016
And...this is why I can't have Halloween candy, particularly chocolate, in my house before Halloween. No readathon for me tomorrow because I'll be working at the library all day, but I'm trying to finish this one up tonight, whist consuming my #readingsnacks. #booktober
I am doing a few reading challenges this year, and books like this are one of the reasons I am so very glad that I am. I probably would not have picked up this little gem otherwise. One of the challenges had an item - "Read a book recommended by someone you just met." A patron at the library told me I should read this one. I'm only about a quarter of the way in, but it is great. A twelve year old girl in 1899 becoming interested in science.
Absolutely charming and wonderful. Strong girl trying to figure out her place in a world when the only place for her is as a wife. Great family dynamics. Going to send these books to my nieces.
Full review over on Goodreads.
Reading this on a friend's recommendation. A fun MG book about a spunky science-loving girl in 1899.
Though I have yet to read "The Evolution of Calpirnia Tate" I'm feeling an intense amount of cover love for it.
Anyone read it? What did you think?

I read this with my 9 year old niece in our weekly book club. Set in 1899, it centres around the precocious and curious Calpurnia Tate who has a passion for the natural world and a distaste for gender norms. I'm seeking recommendations for books or series for two girls (6 and 9) for a road trip.
