Humans of New York
Humans of New York | Brandon Stanton
Based on the blog with more than four million loyal fans, a beautiful, heartfelt, funny, and inspiring collection of photographs and stories capturing the spirit of a city Now an instant #1 New York Times bestseller, Humans of New York began in the summer of 2010, when photographer Brandon Stanton set out to create a photographic census of New York City. Armed with his camera, he began crisscrossing the city, covering thousands of miles on foot, all in an attempt to capture New Yorkers and their stories. The result of these efforts was a vibrant blog he called "Humans of New York," in which his photos were featured alongside quotes and anecdotes. The blog has steadily grown, now boasting millions of devoted followers. Humans of New York is the book inspired by the blog. With four hundred color photos, including exclusive portraits and all-new stories, Humans of New York is a stunning collection of images that showcases the outsized personalities of New York. Surprising and moving, Humans of New York is a celebration of individuality and a tribute to the spirit of the city.

HONY: Stories are people‘s sharing something personal of themselves with photographer Brandon Stanton captured on the streets of NYC.

“I‘m an opera singer.”
“What‘s the highest note you can hit?”
“An F-sharp.”
“What does that sound like?”

I love the juxtaposition of the photos with the quotes from the subjects. Like, there‘s a reason I‘ve followed him on social media for years. So of course I loved this book. It‘s a quick read, but considering it‘s all photos and accompanying quotes of varying length, that‘s no surprise. Now I get to figure out yet another book to start.

Maybel approves this book (she was actually stretching and yawning, thus perfect timing)! This one is amazing. It takes guts to do what Brandon Stanton does— just walk up to people and talk to them. You‘ll laugh, smile, cry, think. It makes you want to hit the street and talk to people. You never know where someone has been or where they‘re trying to go. Who knows? It could be the best thing to happen to them, or you!

For today's #SeasonsReadings2016 prompt for #BookWithPictures I chose Humans of New York: Stories. This Facebook photo project is a bright spot on the internet. I have both of these compilations and they are great to flip through or read page by page. The stories always make me think about how much people from all over the world have in common.

cathysaid LOVE reading these on FB. Did you read the recent series, after the election, where he documented stories from counties (I think in Michigan) where they voted Trump? Poignant stories that helped give me some perspective. 3y
MallenNC @cathysaid I love when he does a special series. And I like that he's used the project's popularity to raise awareness and money for different causes, like schools, cancer research, and refugees. 3y

I don't have a #faveplacetorelax because my default state of being is decidedly unrelaxed. I'm constantly on the move, both externally and internally. My favorite place in the world, though, is my hometown. It's not often conducive to relaxation, but there are times when I look around and think, "Yes. Okay. Of course." And that's as close to relaxation as I get. #augustphotochallenge #augustofpages #nofilter

MrBook Loved this book! Met him at BookCon when he gave a discussion/talk. A really smart dude, as @BookBabe will attest. My favorite reading spot in the City is an unusual hard-to-find hideaway never used, But Clearly front-&-center for all to observe from across the moat, but unfortunately not Winter-conducive. (Is that enough clues? Lol. It's so unique you may not ever figure it out 😆😜!) 3y
katedensen @MrBook "Never used" and visible from Jersey (which is what I assume you mean by "across the moat") makes me think you're talking about the park near the Little Red Lighthouse...? 3y
MrBook Nope. My clue-making needs refinement 😂😂😂. Sorry about that. I'm an amateur here. It's in Manhattan, of course. The moat is an actual moat, although I don't know if that's what it's officially referred to as. 3y
See All 12 Comments
MrBook But I do know which park you're referring to and I like that area as well 😊👍🏻. 3y
katedensen @MrBook I was clearly overthinking this. Belvedere Castle in Central Park? That overlooks the reservoir, which is maybe the moat in question? 3y
MrBook Yes!!!! 😆🙌🏻 3y
MrBook Now where at the Castle, that's the kicker 😊👍🏻. 3y
katedensen @MrBook I win! 🤗 💪🏻 3y
katedensen @MrBook I've never been inside the castle, so I give up on that front. The curse of being a native New Yorker: there's tons of stuff you've never seen or done. I have also never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building. 3y
MrBook The shaaaame, lol. That's alright, it's normal with hometowns. I'll show you my spot sometime. Only @BookBabe knows it. 3y

I adored this book. Brandon Stanton stops strangers in New York and takes pictures and talks to them for twenty minutes and this contains the responses. He chats to the young, old, business people, homeless and punks etc the city is so diverse and it makes you aware that everyone has a story to tell and many with heart breaks or triumphs. If you like to "'People Watch" ( My 10 yr old says it like its an established hobby!?) you will love this!!?X
