Girl in the Locked Room: A Ghost Story
Girl in the Locked Room: A Ghost Story | Mary Downing Hahn
16 posts | 20 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
Ghost story master Mary Downing Hahn unrolls the suspenseful, spine-chilling yarn of a girl imprisoned for more than a century, the terrifying events that put her there, and a friendship that crosses the boundary between past and present. A family moves into an old, abandoned house. Jules's parents love the house, but Jules is frightened and feels a sense of foreboding. When she sees a pale face in an upstairs window, though, she can't stop wondering about the eerie presence on the top floor--in a room with a locked door. Could it be someone who lived in the house a century earlier? Her fear replaced by fascination, Jules is determined to make contact with the mysterious figure and help unlock the door. Past and present intersect as she and her ghostly friend discover--and change--the fate of the family who lived in the house all those many years ago.

I just got this book but so far it‘s very suspenseful. I feel like I could kind of enjoy this book, but so far I just want it to get more interesting.

Book 146

Because Wait Till Helen Comes was my favorite ghost story as a child, I trepidatiously listened to The Girl in the Locked Room: A Ghost Story. Hahn didn't disappoint. The story was original and gently-disquieting. Nothing to reread but an easy, enjoyable listen. 3.5 stars

Wow! Thank you so much @TheDaysGoBy for the fantastic #HauntedHollowSwap! I love everything, the spooky books, the mysterious box, the lovely journal and the scrapbook paper (which is great for Litsy photos!) and of course chocolate! Thank you, Danielle. Such a fun swap. And thank you @wanderinglynn for organizing. Happy Halloween reading to all! 🎃👻😈

This book wasn‘t as scary as her other novel I recently read, “Took,” but it was okay. I was a little bored throughout, and only the end really captivated me. If I would have read this book first, I probably would have never picked up another Mary Downing Hahn book again. Gained some quick points for #teamharkness #scarathlon2020 +6

Another quick one down before my work day ended 👊

This one was part of another challenge so it didn't make my reading list but I found room for it! I liked this. It was a quick and creepy middle grade. I probably would have enjoyed it a lot more growing up though.

I loved the book! It was a great book. I would say it is a 7+. It‘s about a lonely girl in a locked room in a abandoned house. A girl named Jules parents bought the house. Every night Jules would see a girl in the window on the top floor. The girl looked scared and she needed help. Jules noticed that there is a locked door on the top floor. Will she open it??

Even for a middle grade horror novel, I think Hahn phoned this one in, especially when Took was so creepy and fleshed out. A ghost is locked in an attic room of a crumbling house when a family with a lovely daughter arrives to renovate. While my daughter was up with the flu at 5am yesterday, I managed to plow through this for #FinishedInADay for #Booked2020 #Winter.

Reviewsbylola That‘s a bummer. Hahn is usually so good. I hope your daughter feels better! 4y

IamIamIam @Cinfhen Thanks! She's a trooper & I'm hoping my son doesn't end up with it... he's perfecting his Man Flu at a young age... 🙄 HAHA... I'm on to a great MG book for #BBRC so that's perked me up a bit! 😁 4y

A fun, creative, thoughtful, and bittersweet ghost story. I listened to the whole thing today on Audible. Made my plethora of Sunday chores ten times more bearable.

My two oldest kids read this book and told me I had to read it too. It was a nice quick read, not the usual scary “ghost story”.

Mary Downing Hahn is a great intro into Gothic literature for lower middle grade. My daughter and I always enjoy her spooky little books.

A creepy, little ghost story. Just right for the age group. Not too dark. The resolution was a little complicated, but overall very good.

I‘ve been in a bit of a reading slump and I don‘t know why. I ordered this book on Amazon and it arrived yesterday evening. A cute little ghost story. Definitely middle grade but I love Mary Downing Hahn. The Doll in the Garden was the first book of hers I read. I think it‘s scarier than this one.

Cathythoughts I‘m glad you enjoyed this one 👍🏻 6y
