Unfuck Your Brain
Unfuck Your Brain: Using Science to Get Over Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Freak-Outs, and Triggers | Faith Harper, Ph.D
A no-nonsense and helpful guide on how to cope with a slew of mental-health issues that are hellbent on ruining the lives of millions of people worldwide. Our brains are doing their best to help us out, but they can be real assholes sometimes. Sometimes it seems like your own brain is out to get youmelting down in the middle of the grocery store, picking fights with your date, getting you addicted to something, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. You already told your brain firmly that it isn't good to do these things. But your brain has a mind of its own, especially if it's focusing on and obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this book comes in. With humor, patience, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith shows you the science behind what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately to the non-emergencies of everyday life. If you're working to deal with old traumas (particularly P.T.S.D), or if you just want to have a more measured and chill response to situations you face all the time, this book can help you put the pieces of the puzzle together, and get your life and brain back on the right track.

So, I swear (often). I don't have a problem with language, but... I feel like the author used foul language constantly that it lost all meaning. Like it felt very childish. I feel like a lot of the concepts were decent, but it was hard to focus as I caught myself rolling my eyes a lot at her word choices. (maybe audio wasn't the best choice, because it felt very forced). Lobster is also not impressed.

Read4life I felt the same way about this one. I also listened to the audio. 3mo
ElizaMarie @Read4life I‘m glad I wasn‘t the only one. I felt like it was a child so excited they are allowed to use bad words so every other word is bad. 3mo

Short, light read on heavy topics. Very eye opening about trauma responses and easy advice to help overcome negative habits/emotional responses.

Edited: orig had this as “so-so” but ended up using one of the techniques described during a hard conversation. I guess I f‘n learned something.

There are some good points here and solid explanations. The cursing thing is kind of a schtick. The audio version sounds like it was recorded at her kitchen table.

Book34- 2021: I was looking for a science book written by a female author for a #booked2021 prompt and liked that this was to do with brain science. I thought it was a “shock” title to draw readers in but I wasn‘t expecting every page to be filled with F bombs, it was really distracting. I love a good swear, but only when it actually fits within the context of the sentence and situation! There is some good advice in here if you can get past that.

Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 I know EXACTLY what u mean!! I‘m definitely a potty mouth, but a discerning one 😁 2y
Magpiegem @Cinfhen 😂 exactly! Honestly in this book it just sounds silly. Like when a teenager is trying to impress their friends before they learn how to use the right words for the right impact! 2y

*If you don‘t like 🤬 DON‘T listen to it.
*If minors around, use headphones.
NOT for me! I was trying to listen to something lighter before going to sleep but this is too much.Too many F words & cursing for my liking. I don‘t get easily offended. I don‘t mind reading or writing those words, BUT there‘s a huge difference between reading & listening. Somehow listening to it got me in a bad mood instead of helping me un🤬 my brain. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

jeannasser So we could say it…RE-F🤬D your brain… *waits for laugh track* *slowly and awkwardly leaves the room* 🚪🚶‍♂️ 3y

I found the language distracting, things like "yanno," "interwebz," "dunnit," and dropping F bombs several times in one page. It felt like she was trying too hard to be young and hip and it was just cringey. She literally wrote "I have a fancy PhD and can say *fuck* as much as I want."
Looking past that, there was a lot of scientific and useful information, though mostly on trauma which is not why I picked up the book. I liked the homework.

Year of Books - Book 3 🎵👂🏻
Loved this author! She is hilarious and I love her use of profanity - as a fan of a good swear myself, this put me at ease and gave me a good chuckle 😂

Straight to the point with her topics and strategies!

I am usually a monogamous reader but somehow this week I've ended up starting 3 books. They are 3 very different books, mind you, but still...I feel very flustered being in the midst of so many narratives. Trying to work my way through them, a little bit of each one each day. Hoping to have at least 2 done by the end of the week.... Maybe even all 3? 🤞 #weeklyforecast

Tamra Me too! I can only comfortably manage an audio & print book at a time. 4y

Quote that gives me hope this book will at least be decent. "...the brain ends up being a not-particularly-helpful a$$hole instead. It's like your friend that offers to beat the shit out of anyone who upsets you. Gratifying, but not helpful in the long run. "

I was looking through my hoopla from the library today and this intrigued me. Downloaded it. Haven't gotten a very good start on it. But hoping by the summary and what I've read so far it might have some new coping mechanism for me that are better than nicotine. (Trying to quit smoking cigarrttes. I do really well sometimes then something triggers in my head and j go right back to smoking more to help keep my mood stable.)

Cheers.

This doesn‘t work as an audiobook. I‘m a foul-mouthed person, so I know how swearing is supposed to sound and this is not it. Wondering if the curses were added to up the word-count so this would meet some publishing requirement. Anyhoo, there is some solid advice presented and some really questionable information. With the wealth of books available on mental health, there are better options.

LauraJ @cathysaid I read another review that said it sounds like advice from someone who‘s trying to be “the cool mom” and failing miserably. (edited) 5y
LibrarianChels And it seemed like she recorded it at home with a low quality mic. You could hear the hollowness of the room. 4y

The quality of the audio of this book was distracting and the ending was so abrupt, I first thought the audio jumped ahead. Otherwise, the content of the book was extremely helpful and encouraging.
