Between the World and Me
Between the World and Me | Ta-Nehisi Coates
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD Hailed by Toni Morrison as required reading, a bold and personal literary exploration of Americas racial history by the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States (The New York Observer) This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nations history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of race, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and menbodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coatess attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his sonand readersthe story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose childrens lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.Praise for Between the World and MePowerful and passionate . . . profoundly moving . . . a searing meditation on what it means to be black in America today.Michiko Kakutani, The New York TimesBrilliant . . . [Coates] is firing on all cylinders, and it is something to behold: a mature writer entirely consumed by a momentous subject and working at the extreme of his considerable powers at the very moment national events most conform to his vision. The Washington PostIve been wondering who might fill the intellectual void that plagued me after James Baldwin died. Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates. The language of Between the World and Me, like Coatess journey, is visceral, eloquent, and beautifully redemptive. And its examination of the hazards and hopes of black male life is as profound as it is revelatory.Toni MorrisonAbrilliant thinker at the top of his powers, Coates has distilled four hundred years of history and his own anguish and wisdom into a prayer for his beloved son and an invocation to the conscience of his country. An instant classic and a gift to us all.Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other SunsI know that this book is addressed to the authorsson, and by obvious analogy to all boys and young men of color as they pass, inexorably, into harms way. I hope that I will be forgiven, then, for feeling that Coates was speaking to me, too, one father to another, teaching me that real courage is the courage to be vulnerable.Michael ChabonA work of rare beauty . . . a love letter written in a moral emergency, one that Coates exposes with the precision of an autopsy and the force of an exorcism.SlateFrom the Hardcover edition.

I will be thinking about this book for a long fucking time.

There were a lot of things I didn‘t know about race until I lived on a surprisingly diverse hall freshman year of college. I‘m still learning and trying every day to be an ally or at least to read broadly and to understand others‘ perspectives, but I will never move through the world in a black body.

Thank you for the rec @youneverarrived ! 5⭐️ #audiobook

Reggie Oof. The part where the woman pushes his kid and he‘s the one they get mad at and worst of all he gets mad at himself because he forgot who he is in this world and what that meant for him and his son. Made me so angry!!!! Nice review! 4w
Megabooks @Reggie yes, that made me angry too, and the white man who took up for the woman who pushed his son, shameful. 4w
BarbaraBB Great review. But you‘re right about no matter how much we read and try, we will always be white and probably biased too in a way (You should read the tagged book and then yesterday‘s #NYRBBookClub discussion on the subject of race). I am just starting Coates‘s fiction read by the way! 4w

Emilymdxn I adored this book too! You‘re so spot on about how much it teaches you, and how much there is that we as white ppl just can‘t learn without living in a black body, and how hard we need to try anyway. The water dancer is fantastic, i reviewed it a couple months ago I‘ll try to find the post for you. Fantastic book, hard hitting but also magical and dreamy, amazing style. Really recommend it! 4w

Moved this up after seeing my daughter was reading it for class. She read part of the book and listened to part of it. I decided to go with the audio since Coates himself narrates it and I‘m glad I did. He reads his letter/essay in a sing-song voice like poetry and his writing really is beautiful though sad that something like this still needs to be written and read in our society today.

I don't even read that much nonfiction but still choosing my #nonfictionedition of #Top10oftheDecade was a challenge! But all of these linger with me in some way. Not all of them were published in the last decade.
A few honourable mentions: Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay; Heavy by Kiese Laymon; Unbroken by Laura Hilldebrand
A #fictionedition will be impossible! 🤯
@Cinfhen

vivastory Good list, I think that 84 Charing Cross would be on my list. It's charming AF. And I agree, a fiction list is impossible for me too. Maybe #Top100 🤔😂 2mo

I just finished reading. This is the second book I‘ve read from Mr. Ta-Nehisi Coates. Coates is very unique, and his word choice is intellectual mixed with an artistic hip-hop feel. It‘s the mixture of classic writing and a kid blended with anime and the birth of hip-hop. Give it a try and listen to his opinionated writing.

Like every book I read about Race and Racism I believe this book holds truths that white people need to hear. That they need to face and be held accountable for.

This was a beautiful and well done audiobook from a farther to his son about what his life was like what struggles he went through and how he views the world that exists throughout the United States. #NFNov

Scochrane26 This was such an eye-opening book for me. Then I read his We Were Eight years in Power, which was more eye-opening. I recommend it all the time. 3mo

My only regret was listening in the car rather than at home where I could jot down quotes. It's an easy read insofar as it's relatively short and deliberately avoids sociological jargon, but the tradeoff is that it is an account of a man's life and the lessons he has to impart on his son that includes preserving a body and a soul that has been commodified by the US for generations. We, "people who believe we are white," have to do better.

quote
alyxyo
Between the World and Me | Ta-Nehisi Coates

"Here is what I would like for you to know: in America, it is traditional to destroy the black body—it is heritage.”

(I started listening to the audiobook a few days before Dana Fletcher was shot and killed my police in Madison, AL. I am shaken and angry. I cannot imagine how Black people continue to move through the world, but I must continue to listen. My privilege as a white person is only as good as the voices it elevates.)

Wow.
This book punched me in the guts, stood me on my head and forcibly opened my eyes. I mean I thought I understood quite a lot about racism and slavery and the ongoing impacts in modern times, but I clearly did not. This felt visceral and intellectual both.
I appreciated that Coates takes you through his own progress in investigating, his deeper and deeper understanding - it helped me to get past the easy truths to the harder ones.

Tanisha_A I read this recently too, and like you said it hits hard. One can never be forgiven for what happened and still happens. Great review! 4mo

Great review!! (edited) 4mo

Another one for the list of “books I can‘t believe I waited this long to read.” Poignant and eloquently written, Coates blends personal experiences with historical and current events. This book is written as a letter to his son- to both reflect and anticipate what his life might be like. Coates reads the audio version himself, adding another layer to this already very personal work.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We read to better understand our surroundings, to better relate to other humans. Structured as an open letter to his son, Coates speaks eloquently of what it means to grow up in a black body in this country. His brutally honest words are full of pain & frustration, & sometimes, hope. Many have said he didn‘t bring new information to the race discussion, but I find that rude & irrelevant. His stories and thoughts deserve to be heard.

My job, in the little time we have left together, is to match that intelligence with wisdom. Part of that wisdom is understanding what you were given. A city where gay bars are unremarkable, a soccer team in which half the players speak some other language. What I‘m saying is that doesn‘t all belong to you. That the beauty in you is not strictly yours...

Perhaps struggle is all we have because the god of history is an atheist and nothing of his world is meant to be. It‘s already four years since this book was released - how has it taken me this long to read it? I‘ve no doubt this book is timeless. Coates is often criticised for not offering any hope (he shouldn‘t have to), but there is so much power and pride here as he reflects on how he grew to understand what it is and how to be black in America: “They made us into a race. We made ourselves into a people.”

Coates is such a brilliant, evocative writer, and that helps this come alive. But the emotion behind it is so raw, so powerful, so familiar that I think even without Coates‘ gifts, it would still be a potent read. Absolutely vital.

I‘m not sure I can say anything to do this book justice. #LitsyAtoZ (5/26)
