Escaping from Houdini
Escaping from Houdini | Kerri Maniscalco
In this third installment in the #1 bestselling Stalking Jack the Ripper series, a luxurious ocean liner becomes a floating prison of scandal, madness, and horror when passengers are murdered one by one...with nowhere to run from the killer. Audrey Rose Wadsworth and her partner-in-crime-investigation, Thomas Cresswell, are en route to New York to help solve another blood-soaked mystery. Embarking on a week-long voyage across the Atlantic on the opulent RMS Etruria, they're delighted to discover a traveling troupe of circus performers, fortune tellers, and a certain charismatic young escape artist entertaining the first-class passengers nightly. But then, privileged young women begin to go missing without explanation, and a series of brutal slayings shocks the entire ship. The strange and disturbing influence of the Moonlight Carnival pervades the decks as the murders grow ever more freakish, with nowhere to escape except the unforgiving sea. It's up to Audrey Rose and Thomas to piece together the gruesome investigation as even more passengers die before reaching their destination. But with all clues pointing to Audrey Rose as the next victim, can she unravel the mystery before she unwittingly stars in the killer's horrifying finale? p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px 'Times New Roman'} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px 'Times New Roman'; min-height: 16.0px}

New Year‘s afternoon aboard the Etruria began like a fairy tale, which was the first indication a nightmare lurked on the horizon, waiting, as most villains do, for an opportunity to strike.

Lighthearted and fun mystery/“whodunnit” novel. Very reminiscent of Death on the Nile. A sleuthing couple set out to find out who is behind the killing of nightly and theatrical deaths while on a boat. A hearth throb, mysterious carnival director seems suspect but very intriguing throughout the book. Interesting characters, great time setting, and twists to keep you guessing until the end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Escaping Houdini” didn‘t live up to its predecessors in my opinion, however I am partially biased because I hate love triangles with my entire being. In addition, I do wish there was more of a reconciliation between Audrey Rose and Thomas at the end as I feel the epilogue ended abruptly. Ultimately, this is still a solid addition to the series and I am looking forward to the final book.

Definitely not the best in the series... I really don't like Audrey Rose and she made some really frustrating choices in this book

As I get older, it bothers me more when characters in YA make really bad choices that are obviously going to blow up in their faces...
I'm remembering that while I did enjoy the first 2 books in this series, Audrey annoyed me. She still annoys me 😂

Part of my collection.
Have you read Rick Riordan's or Kerri Maniscalco's books? Did you enjoy them?

Also don't mind the dust: unfortunately I had s problem with my leg that sent me to the hospital, and even though now I'm out of the hospital, the doctors said it'll take 6 months/1 year at least to recover. Thus I cannot get on the bed to clean my shelves, nor can I stand for long..

While not quite as fun as the first two, this third book takes place on a ship at sea with a moonlight carnival. AR and Thomas must sort out the illusions from the truth when dead bodies start appearing. Their feelings for each other are put to the test when the charming ringmaster claims to have stolen AR‘s heart. I love the narrator and did enjoy this book overall.

The plot only worked with a lot of artistic licence, which Maniscalco explains at the end of the book.

Set on board a ship with a midnight circus performance every night, Audrey and Thomas soon have to solve the murders of young women. And it all seems to be tied to the circus, which has Houdini as one of its big stage acts.

It's a good set up for the grand finale.

Only wanted to get the zipper into the jacket then sit down with a cup of tea and a book. It turned into six hours of #Audiosewing - mainly because the sewing pattern wasn't very well written and I had to rip out the seams several times. The #audiobook definitely helped though.

Threatened my son with the car fabrics for the lining of the hood.😈 😁

Then made another triangular scarf since I had the machines out anyway.

This was excellent! It contained all the action and adventure with the mystery I could hope for.

This time Audrey Rose and Thomas are on a ship headed to New York. During their time abroad people keep coming up murdered. Many clues lead to some of the cruise ship show workers, but there are so many reasons why the lot of them would kill. I quite loved the journey I found myself on with this one. 🤗

🌟🌟🌟🌟 (closer to 3.5). Loved the idea of the carnival 🎡 on a ship. Audrey and Thomas are on their way to New York to solve a new murder case. To get there they must travel on the grand RMS Etruria. Also aboard the ship is the traveling circus, the Midnight Carnival, for the passengers entertainment they have fortune tellers, trapeze artists, and one well known escape artist. It‘s not long after boarding that a series of murders occur… 🦁🥂✨

I thought the setting for this story wasn't right. I didn't like the love triangle I think that Thomas is great and enough for Audrey Rose. I felt like the characters were lost in this one.

Admittedly this wasn't my favourite in the series, it took me a while to get into it, and I felt that it lacked the humour and partnership the previous books had. However I absolutely loved the atmosphere and setting of this book, I really enjoyed the mystery once again, and had no clue who the murderer was. I also really loved the way this book was written. I'm so excited and sad to read the last book in this series💙

Trying to get through these last two books before the end of the month. I upped my #goodreadschallenge2020 to 100 books which is ambitious for me, but if I can get through these I'll be right on track to start out the year. (We'll see how that goes over the coming months 🤷‍♀️) What is everyone else's Goodreads challenge goal?? We're only a month in, but what has been your #favoritebookof2020 so far??

BookmarkTavern I just started the third October Daye book by Seanan McGuire and I am loving it! 4y

My first finish of 2020! This is the third book in the Stalking Jack The Ripper series. While I did enjoy it, I had a hard time getting into it at the beginning. I can‘t pinpoint what it was that didn‘t draw me in immediately like the first two books did. So, if you start it and struggle a bit, keep reading because it does get better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Much darker than the other two, but maybe the best yet. Audrey Rose comes to grips with her fear of setting down and settling down early. She seemed truest to herself and the most honest with herself in this book. Though she and Thomas go through some heart- wrenching trials, they seem to come out the other end the stronger for them.

Oh thank goodness that‘s over....! While the imagery is stunning, it cries out for brutal editing because the language is florid and overblown. Audrey Rose, a character with promise in the first book, spends most of her time whining about decency, romantic indecision or (*gasp*) desire, an unfortunate fall for a previously interesting character. Once again, actions do not match character ages & seem shoehorned down to make the book YA. 😭🤦🏻‍♀️😭

Here is another Houdini (from whom I wouldn‘t want to escape)! Honestly, this book is perilously close to a DNF but for the fact a friend bought me the last book in the series and I promised I‘d read it 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Audrey Rose, an interesting character in the first book, becomes a ranty, annoying Puritan in this one. One more gasping line about indecency or debauchery and I swear I won‘t be able to be held responsible for my actions

Anyone who has read this one... I‘m struggling! Half a chapter before, Character X desperately wanted to learn something (stupid). Now she‘s being offered the chance but she‘s turning it down apparently because it was offered...🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ This series has a RAVENOUS fandom while I‘m sitting here with two expensive hardbacks and stupid characters I‘m really starting to loathe... OPINIONS PLEASE LISTY!

CarolynM I don't think I understand what the author is trying to make these characters say. Maybe I need more context, or maybe it's just pretentious twaddle🙂 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM nope - pretentious twaddle 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel like the author could have been BRILLIANT with a brutal editor and a slap to the back of the head: “FLORID IS BAD, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IS GOOD” .... the texts is the middle of an outraged rant by Character Y that Character X has offered Character Y something they wanted half a chapter before but HOW COULD THEY, THE UPSTART... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 5y

Creswell and Wadsworth are... not at it again. I was disappointed with this read because what I have come to love was not present in this book- a lovely team working together to solve crimes. Though I get what the author was doing, I felt the love triangle was unnecessary and that the case was a background piece. With that said, I am looking forward to the next book, hoping it gets back to what I loved so much about the story.
