I already knew about the Ellen and William Craft and their escape, although only in a one-sentence history sense. Even though I generally knew how their story turned out, the twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. I also enjoyed learning about other people in the Crafts‘ social circle who had also emancipated themselves via some very daring and ingenious plans. And Woo‘s research is immaculate.

I sometimes have this dream that I‘m drowning in a giant bowl of oatmeal. That‘s how I feel when I‘m at home. When I‘m at school, it‘s different. I hang out with Zach, sneak Ritz Bits crackers during class, and read horror novels in history.

July #WrapUp.

Wow! July was a really bad reading month for me. I dnf‘d The Cake House and best of the month was The Other Side of Tomorrow. Sheesh, hope August is a better reading month.

Yunho and Myunghee‘s escapes from North Korea were harrowing to read! The descriptions of their existences in North Korea and while on the run were horrible and so difficult to read. Stories like these are so important to remind us that kids (people) in this world live lives much different than ours.

(I had an issue with how Christianity was presented as a miracle, but was able to overlook it.)

This only had a 94% rating on Litsy, which reminds me of that one sportswriter who didn't vote Michael Jordan into the Basketball Hall of Fame. History books don't get much better than this.

The French-Jewish philosopher Raymond Aron would say, when asked about the Holocaust, "I knew, but I didn't believe it. And because I didn't believe it, I didn't know."
