I only got 3 books during our road trip despite as many bookstore visits we could fit in. ☹️ Fortunately daughter got a huge haul of books throughout the trip by an author she‘s struggled to find here at home. My fave bookstore was Full Circle in Oklahoma City. The selection was astounding (almost a whole shelf for Tolkien—son may have received a couple of books off that shelf when we got home). The atmosphere & design of the store was lovely. ⬇️

Texreader Although I have #Iran covered for #readingasia2021, this book I got in OKC looks so good. I haven‘t read anything set in Iran by a woman, and I‘ve read a number of books about women set in Afghanistan so I know it‘s a genre I like and want to learn more about. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB 3y
TheBookHippie I absolutely loved this read . Enjoy. It stays with you. 3y

Haunting and fascinating. I am not sure I‘ve read something quite like this. Based on the life and poetry of Forugh Farrokhzad, this novel is semi-fictional but at its core, full of truth and history. I adored it and was heartbroken by it.

Wow, this book was beautiful, sad, inspiring and depressing all in one. I had never heard of it before book club, but found the plot to be intriguing. It‘s historical fiction about the life of an Iranian poet. Her poetry and life was shocking to most, but she lived the life she chose. Heartbreaking and full of life. #bookclub #fiction

Stunning and beautiful story about Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad. I couldn‘t put it down. Now I need to go read all of her poetry. Definitely worth reading this interesting story of this strong and trail blazing poetess.

5 ⭐️. Jasmin Darznik A mezmerizing story of a brave woman seeking the freedom and independence to write heartfelt and brilliant poetry. Song of a Captive Bird is a fictional account of Iran‘s most infamous and iconic woman poet, Forugh Farrokhzad. She was a literary sensation, and acclaimed filmmaker, who was both loved and hated within her country. https://www.bluestockingreviews.com/blog/song-of-a-captive-bird

Song of a Captive Bird | Jasmin Darznik

Love is another country. No, I'd go further than that. The difference between foreign countries is never so great as the difference between being in love and not being in love. Not only does the world around you seem changed when you are in love -bright where it once was dull, lively and varied where it was once routine-but people are different, not least of all you yourself, though the difference might be that you've returned to your native self.

“I‘ll greet the sun again.
I‘ll greet the stream that flowed within me,
the clouds that were my tallest thoughts,
the aspens in the garden
that endured seasons of drought with me,
the flock of crows
that brought me the scent of the fields at night,
my mother who lived in the mirror and
reflected the face of my old age,
the burning womb
my lust has filled with green seeds.
I‘ll greet them all again.

So many quotable insights from Jasmin Darznik in today's #womenshistoryreads interview! Here's one: "It's not just that [women's] stories are neglected, but that there is often a deliberate & sustained effort to erase them from history." A must-read. Greermacallister.com/blog

This historical fiction novel tells the story of Forugh, a famous Iranian poet and filmmaker from the 1950s. While the subject is fascinating, I found the writing to be a little clunky. Transitions were rough and many parts felt repetitive. I'm inspired to read more about Forugh, but probably wouldn't read another novel by this author because I just didn't click with the writing style. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #arc

I fell in love with the Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad when I took a seven am Iranian Lit class in college. I feel a kindred spirit with Forugh even though I‘m Puerto Rican and not a poet. But, that‘s what I love about literature- it transcends barriers. She was a poet during a time of upheaval and change. This book reimagines her life. Some parts felt clunky, but others flowed well. I love that it‘s an ownvoices, too 💚.

Notafraidofwords If anyone wants to read it, let me know and I‘ll send it your way media mail (US + PR only). 6y

Notafraidofwords @Tamra the class was really early but the professor was excellent. One thing happened while taking the course. Her brother who was living in France at the time died in his home suspiciously. She believed the Iranian country did it. Because he was speaking out. 6y
Tamra @Notafraidofwords oh my! That would definitely be memorable. 6y
Tamra @Notafraidofwords thank you much, I will! 6y
Notafraidofwords @Tamra yes, plus she did a mix of history and lit that really worked well. I think I‘ve always learned best with that approach. 6y

I've never read anything by @jdarznik but I'm really excited to start this beautiful book. I'll write a review as soon as possible 😎

An startling look at the life of the Poet Farugh Farrokhzad. A paradigm shift through the writing of Jasmin Darznik. Beautifully tragic. A cultural feast. A tour of Tehran from the 40‘s to 1968. Through the eyes of a poet that become the voice of a generation. A fantastic Historical Fiction hitting stands this month. #mustread #SongofaCaptiveBird #Poet #Farugh
