A Pocketful of Crows | Joanne M Harris
28 posts | 21 read | 48 to read
Joanne M Harris has written a beautiful and powerful stand-alone novella which springs from the page as a haunting, lyrical and utterly compelling modern fairy tale. Inspired by the Child Ballads, it's a superb tale of love, loss and revenge.

My nearby hometown recently replaced the library I grew up with and still frequented. I had to take a look and in doing so, noticed this beautiful book on the shelves. This new fairy tale was a quick read with beautiful illustrations. I‘m looking forward to the other fairy tales the author has written.

This was such a nice fairytale to read. Easy to follow as well as honest and to the point, I finished this in one sitting. I also really like the idea of Joanne M. Harris writing her own series of magical fairytales, as this one felt very heartfelt and unique.

A grown up fairytale. It‘s a lovely story about a wild girl with no name (to name is to tame) who can travel in the bodies of wild animals. She falls in love with the local Lord‘s son, who does name her. She loses her abilities, he betrays her, and she exacts her revenge. The illustrations are gorgeous, too.

A YA fairytale of a girl in the forest who falls in love with a boy in a castle, that‘s woven through with magic and suffering and heartbreak and revenge.

Late night reading helped me finish this one up.

The illustrations in it are gorgeous. The story itself follows the seasons with a lovely folklore-style tale about love.

I really enjoyed the parts dealing with the wheel of the year and the mother-maiden-crone explanations more than the rest...a good book for the witches here.

Nice timing. Trying to finish this one up before going back to work tomorrow.

Bleh, I don‘t want to stop reading and get out of bed because that means I have to deal with today and I definitely don‘t want to.

Hope everyone is having a peaceful, safe day and I‘m around if there‘s anyone who needs a friendly chat.

Yesterday I read the last book in my #yearendclearout library stack!! Book 4/4! Crows is a delightfully subversive fairy tale filled w/wildness, animals, love, betrayals, vengeance, spells, & lyrical language. I read it in 1 day.

Looking forward to 2019 now! I have made a few goals for myself & will be participating in a couple of challenges. I'll share all of that next week. Until then I'll be picking books from my own shelves. #readwhatyouown

The year it turns, and turns, and turns. Winter to summer, darkness to light, turning the world like wood on a lathe, shaping the months and the seasons. Tonight is May Eve, and the moon is full for the second time this month. May Eve, and a blue milk moon. Time for a witch to go traveling.

This book at the library was too gorgeous not to take home. I follow Joanne Harris on Twitter and she‘s super interesting and insightful but I realized I‘ve never read her books. This one seems up my alley and the art is a-ma-zing.

I love rhymes like this, & Joanne Harris' books are filled with them. Mine are more like, "He ain't worth the powder to blow him to hell" or "God willing and the creek don't rise" or "If the cows are lying down it means rain." ? I loved the one "Elisabeth, Elsbeth, Betsy, and Bess, all went together to a bird's nest..."

laurieluna I loved these parts of the book, and the illustrations are amazing. 6y
whatsthEStorey @miralunasbooknook I loved this book & finished it the day it was delivered! This is a #blameitonmiralunasbooknook book! 😂😂 6y

Definitely got my reading mojo back!
Lovely little read. Gripping story about a 'witch' who is accused of enchanting a Lord, told from her perspective. Very full of nature, and full of beautiful illustrations. It left me wanting more though and had an abrupt end. 4🌟 overall
Now moving on to A Wrinkle in Time 😊

TrishB Lovely looking book 😁 6y
laurieluna @TrishB it was a real delight. I loved pausing for a couple of minutes between (chapters? Sections? It's set out in months) to look at each of the full page illustrations. So much detail and care with the story in each one. I was glad to start March off with this. 😊 6y

Snow update! It's still fallling, most of my garden ornaments are now long lost relics fossilized in the snow. My parents are currently on a milk run to try and find some and get it to me. On the plus I'm steaming through this book and will finish it today! 🙌 silver linings...

laurieluna @whatsthEStorey it's a great little read! Very quick. About 50 pages left to go. It's a twist on the 'evil witch enchanting a prince' story, told from the 'witch's' perspective. It'll definitely be getting at least 4 stars 😊 6y
laurieluna @whatsthEStorey also thank you! Took me an age to hunt Chip down! 😂 6y
whatsthEStorey You convinced me! I ordered it off Amazon this morning, along with The Blue Eyed Boy, another of hers I haven't read. 6y

Boys are dressed and breakfasted. Now to enjoy some hot crumpets and a book while the little one bounces and the big one dances around to The Ramones, the big ones latest obsession.

MinDea Mmmm crumpets look yummy...how are they different from English Muffins? 6y
laurieluna @MinDea I didn't have a clue, so googled it! 😂 'Crumpets are made only using baking soda, where as English muffins are made with yeast or sourdough (and occasionally a little baking soda to help things along). Crumpets are cooked only on one side, so the bottom is flat and toasted while the top is speckled with holes (delicious, butter-absorbing holes...).' 6y
AmyG Not a bad obsession, The Ramones. I got to see them once. He has good taste. (edited) 6y
laurieluna @AmyG very lucky! His favourites are Blitzkrieg Bop or the 'ey oh song' as he calls it, and their version of Spiderman. Asks for them daily! He'll listen to other punk bands too but it's Ramones he always asks for. 6y
MinDea Oooohhh! I might have to try one! I think there is a crumpet shop downtown! 6y

Rather than sticking to a list I've decided to mood read my next read and picked this. I think I read better and more when I don't have a set plan or schedule. I'm actually excited to start this! 😄

Mitch I can never plan ahead. As I finish one book I always let my mood dictate where I go next on the shelf! That becomes a problem when you need to squeeze in reading Bookclub books though! 6y
laurieluna @Mitch one or 2 planned reads a month are fine, I think I just overwhelmed myself trying to read 6 planned books off my #mounttbr a month. I just need to go with the flow! 6y
Mitch ❤️flow! Enjoy ! 6y
TrishB No planning here! Except if I‘m in one of the travelling book things! 6y
laurieluna @TrishB think I've finally decided to do away with plans. I have joined the travelling book though, as it looks interesting! 6y

I really liked this one. A classical story of a prince cursed by a witch, but from the view of said witch😍 I love that fantasy tends to be less black and white recently!!
