Shark Club
Shark Club | Ann Kidd Taylor
A novel about love, loss, and sharks by the New York Times bestselling coauthor of the memoir Traveling with Pomegranates On a summer day on the Gulf of Mexico in 1988, two extraordinary things happen to twelve-year-old Maeve Donnelly. First, she is kissed by Daniel, the boy of her dreams. Then, she is attacked by a blacktip shark. Eighteen years later, Maeve is a world-traveling marine biologist studying and swimming with the very animals that once threatened her life. Known among her peers as the -shark whisperer, - Maeve is fearless in the water. On land, however, Maeve is dogged by unresolved wounds and indecisive about the path her life will take. After a particularly inspiring assignment abroad, Maeve returns to the small island off Florida's coast where she grew up and to her childhood home--the legendarily charming and eccentric Hotel of the Muses, where she was raised by her grandmother. There, she is greeted by troubling news. An illegal shark-finning operation has moved into town, and hundreds of sharks are dying. As Maeve fights to protect the fate of the animals so dear to her heart, she finds that her twin brother may be about to make it big as a novelist, using her love life as his jumping-off point. Will she confront her feelings about her brother's betrayal--and forgive her childhood sweetheart, Daniel, the missteps of their youth? Or will she dive headlong back into her work and open her heart to Nicholas, her colleague who shares her passion for the ocean? Set against the intoxicating backdrop of palm trees, blood orange sunsets, calypso bands, and key lime pies, The Shark Club is a love story, an environmental mystery, and an exploration of a woman's mysterious kinship with the sea and the sharks that inhabit it.

It‘s been slow going this month so far, but I finished another #14booksin14weeks pick, so I‘m calling it a win. Happy to finally get it off my shelf. Rating is 3.5/5

I love sharks, so the underwater scenes were my favourite, but I just think I‘m not a contemporary fiction girlie anymore. They‘re almost always a 2-3.5 for me lately.

I finished this while waiting for a student. It was a pleasant diversion and made me wish I could safely travel to a warmer part of the country and stay at the literary-themed hotel featured in this book. 🏝

This was a fun, summer themed, light romance. I loved all the shark details & Florida setting. The characters were warm and the overall theme of love not being what you expected was done nicely. Not riveting, but I enjoyed it. And I really wish this literary themed beach hotel existed bc it sounded amazing!! Recommend for a light summer read!

1. I love Smashmallows/gourmet marshmallows (esp. chocolate mint). I like gummies. I like chocolate (milk over dark* #philistine). I‘m a BIG fan of wasabi peas.
2. A cup of coffee. Is that an accessory? 😉 & sunglasses — the weirder the better.
3. BUFFY. 🖤
4. My Girl. An American Werewolf in London.
5. Green/blue/gray

monalyisha Note: I like *any* chocolate, though. I like most flavors & am willing to experiment. I like sweet, salty, spicy, sour, fruity, floral, earthy, herbal, umami, nutty — all of it. 🤤 Oh! And sweet + salty combined is divine. Basically, I just like food. 😆 No allergies! The only exception I can think of is black licorice. It‘s not a taste I enjoy. (I still participate in the annual Family Shot of Sambuca every Christmas...but under duress.) (edited) 5y

This weeks audiobook. How cute was this? Sweet light romance with a little mystery, love triangle and sharks! It is set in SW FL where I live so it was fun to read about local places and flavors. Great beach read. 🦈🦈🦈🦈

I haven‘t been able to let go of my vacation vibes so this seemed like a good fit to keep the beachy theme going. (We‘ve also been binging Bloodline.) Maeve is a marine biologist who specializes in the study of sharks. (I wanted to be a marine biologist when I was growing up.) Her family owns and lives in a hotel in Palermo, FL. There‘s a love triangle, family drama, a precocious little girl that loves science, etc. Right in my wheelhouse. 4 🌟.

LauraBeth Can you just tag me on all of your posts - that‘s really convenient 😂👍 6y

This is a great book if you're looking for a light, summery read. I gave it 3 stars out of 5. It wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad either, but it got the average rating mainly because I had high expectations and it didn't meet them fully. My favorite parts were pretty much anything to do with marine biology. If you're going looking for some great lady scientist moments in a book and good writing, then I definitely recommend it.

I had an absolute blast reading this book. It was fun, had a lot of heart, & a great family dynamic. Between the sharks and the family and personal relationships, Maeve had a lot of vulnerabilities in this book, and it was really fun to see how she reacted to them. And oh my gosh, the literary references and quotes! Her grandmother‘s love of all things bookish made my little booknerd ❤️ go pitter-patter. Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

AmbityScambity I received a free copy of this book from #Booksparks in exchange for an honest review. #src2017 7y

3.5/5 ⭐️'s
Set against the backdrop of swaying palm trees, picture perfect ocean views, and the vibrant setting of the Florida Keys. The Shark Club is a story of the passions of one woman's life: her first love and new love; the sea and sharks that inhabit it. The novel isn't earth-shattering, but this was a fun, light read and the perfect beach/summer read. #thesharkclub #annkiddtaylor #bookreview #beachread #booksy #books #bibliophile

Maeve is twelve when she goes into the water and shares a kiss with Daniel. The next moment Daniel is bumped by a shark which bites Maeve. It is just the beginning of her two great loves.
This book juggles romance, lost love, betrayal, grief, and forgiveness, with shark conservation. It was unexpectedly an enjoyable, light summer read but it might not encourage you to go back into the water. 😂
