The Black Book
The Black Book | James Patterson, David Ellis
Three bodies in a beautiful and luxurious bedroom. Billy Harney was born to be a cop. The son of Chicago's chief of detectives, whose twin sister is also on the force, Billy plays it by the book. Alongside Detective Kate Fenton, Billy's tempestuous, adrenaline-junkie partner, there's nothing he wouldn't sacrifice for his job. Enter Amy Lentini, a hard-charging assistant state's attorney hell-bent on making a name for herself-who suspects Billy isn't the cop he claims to be. They're about to be linked by more than their careers. One missing black book. A horrifying murder leads investigators to an unexpected address-an exclusive brothel that caters to Chicago's most powerful citizens. There's plenty of incriminating evidence on the scene-but what matters most is what's missing: the madam's black book. Now shock waves are rippling through the city's elite, and everyone's desperate to find it. Chicago has never been more dangerous. As everyone who's anyone in Chicago scrambles to get their hands on the elusive black book, no one's motives can be trusted. An ingenious, inventive thriller about power, corruption, and the power of secrets to scandalize a city-and possibly destroy a family-The Black Book is James Patterson at his page-turning best.

So many twists with this one. It was really good.

Billy Harney is a Chicago Cop. He loves his job, but one day he is shot in bed with his girlfriend, assistant DA Amy, and his partner, Kim on the floor dead. He pulls through but can't remember what happened. Soon he is put on trail for murder. Has he been set up or is he really corrupt?

An easy listen with no great surprises or OMG moments for me. It kept me amused while sitting in endless medical appointment waiting rooms and for that I am grateful. This is the first in the series and spent some time building up character development and backgrounds, I might pick up book two and see how it progresses.

I didn't think this book was as good as my dad did. He loved it, my mom did too and that's why they lent it to me. I felt longer than it needed to be. There were so many little parts that eventually became relevant, and I was really hoping they would, but way too much time was spent on them.
This was my first Patterson, I'll have to give his better work a try soon.

suzie.reads I love James Patterson read all the Alex Cross series which I think is fab! 5y

My mom gave me this book to read about a month ago and I just added it to the stack. Yesterday she asked if I read it yet. So, I took the hint and started it this morning after I finished The Restaurant at The End of the Universe.

I had firmly decided that one James Patterson book was enough after reading The Murder House. I had tried him...that was an alright book, but there was no intention to continue our relationship. I was good. But one of my co-workers is crazy for him. Everyday she asks me to give him another go & lately it has been because of this book. She says that I‘ll be a fan after reading this book. So every author probably deserves a 2nd chance. Here we go.

JoScho I haven‘t read this one but I have read all of The Women‘s Murder Club books. I wasn‘t impressed by Murder House and didn‘t even finish it. 6y
Nute @JoScho How did you get on with The Women‘s Murder Club books? I am almost questioning my own opinion about his books, because he has a huge following. I seem to be in the minority grouping. But I am going to give this book a try. 6y
JoScho I really like The Women‘s Murder Club series. I will say I don‘t know if the new ones are quite as good as the old ones but maybe give them a chance. 6y
TheSpineView I never got into his books. I found them a bit over worked. Yes, I know I am in the midd I am curious what you will have to say on this on. 6y

Earlier today, wearing my new Minnie mouse poncho while wrapping presents & finishing my current #Audiobook. 🐭

I originally got this poncho to give to the munchkin but loved it's uber soft coziness so much that I got myself one too!😄

As for the 🎧📖:
Although I enjoyed the many twists, ultimately the writing & narrative itself left much to be desired. Not to mention the roll-your-eyes Insta love.😒

With the holiday just around the corner, it's been pretty quiet here at work today so I get to listen while I work!

Starting this one on my beau's recommendation- he loved it. Promised him I would but to be honest, I haven't read any Patterson for years.

But let's see how this one goes🤔.

It's almost Friday, it's almost Friday, it's almost Friday.....💭

Definitely glad I picked this Patterson book up. One of his best books and definitely his best in awhile.
It opens on a murder scene & switches between the present & past. Is the main character a murderer & dirty cop? Is he being set up? A lot of questions & no answers because he can't remember 2 weeks of his life. Twists up to the end.

How can you prove your innocence if you can't remember the crime? Shortly after a case that shocked the state and got a mayor tossed from office, Billy is shot in the head and left for dead along side his partner and the prosecuting attorney from the last trial. As the only survivor, it rests heavily on Billy to put the pieces together, but that two week period is lost. Gone. Over time, fingers start to point at Billy. Can he clear his name?
