All the drama and glitz one expects from Taylor Jenkins Reid. Read my thoughts here: https://debbybrauer.org/#the-seven-husbands-of-evelyn-hugo
It might be my best read of this year
Once I started, I couldn't put this down. Cliche, I know, but true. I'm a huge fan of old movies (TCM's my favorite channel), so I knew quite a bit about the way celebrity life in Hollywood was in the 50s-70s. To have to hide a love between two soulmates makes this story all the more poignant. Reid developed characters that I ended up caring deeply about, and the story took me on a page-turning path; I was sad to see it end.
78 pages left and I have to go to work... I will finish late in the night and tomorrow my shift will start at 7 A.M. so I guess I will finish it tomorrow afternoon after these two shifts 😭 I can't wait! I need to know!
Favourite book of the year! Reading for my #lmpbc Aging and reclusive movie icon Evelyn Hugo wants to tell the truth about her glamorous yet scandalous life. She chooses a little known magazine reporter. Monique is astounded. Why her? Monique listens in fascination to Evelyn‘s story of LA in the 1950‘s through to her decision to leave show businesses in the 1980s. Unexpected friendships, seven husbands, ambition and a forbidden love. 5⭐️
What a sad story. Beautifully written rollercoaster. I had a hard time thinking all this happened within one person‘s lifetime, but it was overall a powerful story about self-acceptance, control, love, penance. Lovely parallels of Evelyn growing in desirability the more she made herself small. Really highlights the lengths a person would go - and the sacrifices they‘d make - to both hide and achieve.
Added 4 more books to the #owlsreadingchallenge !!
Magical numbers: a book with a magical number - 7 husbands
Telescope: a book you saw on litsy - red white and royal blue
🐉Care of magical creatures:
Comc: a book with a magical creature - when women were dragons
Cheering: funny or happy book - good omens
HOW BOUT THAT TWIST?!?! I haven‘t gasped like that since Big Little Lies. This book was so well written and I loved hearing how everything unfolded in their fictional golden age of Hollywood. The deep love and friendship TJR explored was heartbreaking and beautiful. Thrilled to finally know what all the hype is about.
I was very surprised how little of this book was actually about the many husband's of Evelyn Hugo. I guess that is the point? I guess it is a great reminder that celebrities are people too... and you can't judge a book by its cover... and you don't know the kind of events that have transpired in one's life... and blah blah blah. I picked up this book looking for scandal. Instead I got a love story and the compromises people make to be together.
I finally got to start this! This was my travel read for Lithuania. I went for a training there last week for couple of days. I just loved Vilnus! It's such a pretty city especially with all the fall colours! I didn't get much reading done but enough to know that I'm really interested in this book! 😁
So excited about this #bookhaul of used books! Some that I‘ve had on my TBR forever and some that are new to me.
See any titles you loved? Where should I start??
Loved this book! It is Hollywood glamour from the outset and such an enjoyable read. I laughed, cried and felt so much for the characters in this book. Its beautiful story telling and it has confirmed I‘m a big Taylor Jenkins Reid fan. Highly recommend! 5 🌟
My first book finished this month. Way way way off my average. I liked this one okay; I never quite got to that place where you forget you are reading and not noticing how the author is very skilled but I am not quite convinced. I did appreciate the ending, the construction overall. Four out of five (and no pie mentions, boo) 76th book of the year.
This story turned out to be so much better than I anticipated. The intricate storyline, all the different characters and how they shape Evelyn throughout her life—it all came together beautifully. Thanks to booktok for recommending this one! :)
Purchased our next month‘s book club selection because the library holds were too long. The Sarah Addison Allen purchase because I enjoy her light magical realism.
Not-so-fun Fact: I have yet to finish a book this month. #BookSpinBingoBust
This book is fabulous. It's about Evelyn Hugo, but it's also a beautiful representation that appearances do not necessarily depict the whole story - that people are complex and messy and a mixture of "good" and "bad". The "twist" is heavily foreshadowed (but I am an English teacher), so if you like to be surprised, it may not impress you, but it is, overall, a beautifully done novel.
Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo-
It was an amazing book. I personally loved the writing style, so plain, so beautiful. Nothing too complex. The book was simple, yet so complicated. There were so many characters, yet I didn‘t find myself confused at any point in the novel. That‘s the beauty of a good writer. She knows what she‘s writing. And it‘s good.
You should definitely give it a read! #sevenhusbandsofevelynhugo
This is tough!! Only 3…
1) The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
2) The Nightingale
3) Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance
So many others, but I‘ll go with those!

“People think that intimacy is about sex. But intimacy is about truth. When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is 'you're safe with me'- that's intimacy.”
Of course it had to be Evelyn!! And look at this absolutely stunning book sleeve 💚 thank you @TheBookHippie for sharing the the link on Etsy with me!!
I have just finished this book and I am speechless. I have not read a book in years where a twist made me close the book and just sit in silence, processing. I honestly could‘ve finished this book in one sitting. It‘s complex, it‘s heartwarming, yet also heartbreaking. I honestly wish I could experience reading it for the first time again.
I couldnt put it down!!! This was recommended to me by my partner‘s brother who insisted “its not like a rom-com, it‘s like,, an exploration of a person through the different loves she had.” He was absolutely right. It‘s well-balanced, heartfelt, and charming, and I‘ve already recommended it to three more people lol.
Evelyn Hugo has finally decided to sit down with a reporter and tell her whole life story. The good, the bad, the worst. To the gossip rags, she is a woman unable to settle with just one man, but there is always more to every story than the words printed by those looking to sell papers. I couldn‘t decide whether I admired her or disliked her which added to the fascination. Evelyn knew what she wanted and found a way to get it.
Why did I wait so long to read this book??? I actually read it on audiobook and found it to be so endearing and empowering, heartbreaking at times, but incredibly powerful. I understand now why this book continues to spark discussion and remains so popular! Totally worth the #bookstagram and #booktok hype!!!
This was a brilliant book. I loved the way that all the characters were portrayed and something that I loved the most was the character development. Often when we read books, we feel get to know characters, and what better joy is there to see your favourite characters develop their personalities and delve further into their stories? Great representation of the LGBTQ+ community, expertly handling labels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
