If I Did it: Confessions of the Killer | O. J. Simpson, Goldman Family
20 posts | 27 read | 17 to read
In 1994, Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson were brutally murdered at her home in Brentwood, California. O.J. Simpson was tried for the crime in a case that captured the attention of the American people, but was ultimately found not guilty of criminal charges. The victims' families brought civil cases against Simpson, and he was found liable for willfully and wrongfully causing the deaths of Ron and Nicole by committing battery with malice and oppression. In 2006, HarperCollins announced the publication of a book in which O.J. Simpson told how he hypothetically would have committed the murders. In response to public outrage that Simpson stood to profit from these crimes, HarperCollins canceled the book. A Florida bankruptcy court awarded the rights tothe Goldmans in August 2007 to partially satisfy the unpaid civil judgment, which has risen, with interest, to over $38 million. The Goldman family views this book as his confession, and has worked hard to ensure that the public will read this book and learn the truth. This is the original manuscript approved by O.J. Simpson, with up to 14,000 words of key additional commentary.--From publisher's description.

@MidnightBookGirl 🌚
This guy, what a creep! It's basically a narcissistic murderer blaming his victims and braggingabout how he got away with it.. It made me so angry.🤬 The only reason I don't feel terrible for even reading it is because the proceeds went to the Goldman family.

LibrarianRyan Have u heard the theory that it was actually his son and that is why the gloves didn‘t fit? I heard it recently and it was interesting. 3y
Tera66 @LibrarianRyan No, I hadn't heard that😳😮. The whole thing is crazy, looking back the whole circus of it all.🎪 3y
bookaholic1 @LibrarianRyan I heard that as well, very interesting 3y
MidnightBookGirl I recently got the audiobook for the same reason- to support the Goldman family. Haven't actually read it yet though. 3y
Tera66 @MidnightBookGirl I did this on audio too, I'm glad it supported the Goldman family, but looking back I regret listening to it. It's pretty much a smear campaign against Nicole. A lot of "see why she deserved it?" 3y

ljuliel If you‘re interested in this story and a bit more about how this book came out, there‘s a really good podcast by Kim Goldman , called Confronting OJ Simpson. Very good. You learn a lot of “ behind the scenes “ stuff that went on before, during and after the trial. 5y
arlenefinnigan @ljuliel ooh that does sound interesting, will check it out. 5y

It reminded me of hearing a little kid say they weren't totally wrong in hurting a friend because, after all, that friend called them a bad name first, so they aren't a bad kid, just misunderstood... Really, if it had just been the text of the book by O.J. I might have not even finished it.

I read this as an #audiobook. It‘s a mixed bag in that you get the perspective of a narcissistic psychopath but you also have to swallow the fact that everything O.J. says is a lie. It‘s clear he tried to spin a tale that would show him in a sympathetic light. It didn‘t work. He also clearly wanted to portray Nicole as a drug addled floozy.

MicheleinPhilly Gross. True story: My wife was a nanny for the family that lived next door to him during the civil trial. He used to try to chat her up when she was outside with the children. 🤢 5y
Reviewsbylola STOP!! That‘s crazy. He has no shame and clearly feels like he‘s a gift to women. @MicheleinPhilly 5y
Reviewsbylola It‘s actually an interesting story that is explained in the beginning of the book. OJ initially wrote it with a ghost writer and clearly wanted it published but the Goldman family fought over it in his bankruptcy proceedings and actually were awarded the rights to the book. @RiaWritten 5y
RiaWritten @Reviewsbylola That‘s utterly fascinating actually. Thanks! 5y
Reviewsbylola It made me feel better about reading it. I gathered that Simpson actually felt uncomfortable about the “hypothetical” chapter dealing with the murders and wanted it taken out. So I am sure he wasn‘t happy the book was ultimately published. Especially not with all the forwards and afterword that call him out for being a cold blooded murderer. 😂 @RiaWritten (edited) 5y

A narcissistic egomaniac attempting to justify his reasons for murder. Almost the entire book is spent vilifying the victim. It's gross.👎
P.S. I'm posting a good pic of my dog because all the images for this book just made me sad.

#ANewChapter #UniqueRead @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88
I picked this for today's prompt cause its the only book i know of where rights were striped away. After O.J tried to profit off writting the book a judge ruled in favor of Goldman family of the rights & profits from the book & i remember they put the If in the title real small print to really emphasize it as a confession. Litsy even has it under both names for the author.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I remember watching this trial!! 😡😡 5y
vkois88 I didn't realize they had re-released it under their names and dropping the "If"... that's interesting. But I'm glad. The whole thing was crazy. That poor family... 5y

This was absolute torture to get through. Written by Simpson himself, it does nothing but paint Nicole Brown Simpson in bad light while saying Simpson was the real victim. There is only one chapter on the murder itself (which, by the title you'd expect more). I only read and finished it b/c it was a buddy read with a friend who never reads.

ReadingSusan Oh I bet that was enraging. 7y
Reviewsbylola He is truly a horrible person. Not to mention an egotistical, maniacal, abusive POS. 7y
Kristy_K @ReadingSusan It was! The whole book is literally him saying "woe is me, I'm such a perfect person and husband and here's vindictive, abusive B I have to put up with." I wanted to throw the book across the room. 7y

Okay - I decided this is my #Anger prompt for #SweetEmotions photo challenge. More than any fictional character's actions I was so furious reading this narcissist's thoughts. And then I see he may get out on parole soon. 😑😠

Laalaleighh Who gets acquitted of murder and then writes and profits offs book about "if I had though". ???????? 7y
Laalaleighh This is the first thing that ever made me question our double jeopardy laws. 7y
Smangela @Laalaleighh it's unreal! Luckily there's a forward to this one and you learn that the Goldman family won the rights to this book since he didn't pay them the restitution he was supposed to from the civil suit (where he was found guilty). So they ultimately made the decision to publish and view it as his confession. They get the proceeds as well as his other creditors (the Brown family, some lawyers, the ghostwriter) 7y
Laalaleighh @Smangela well, that makes it slightly better. Still a heinous thing to write! 7y
Smangela @Laalaleighh I really can't believe that it was set to be published when it was driven by OJ! 7y

Pickpick

I just finished the last page of this and I had to review it immediately...this book is CRAZY. If you didn't think OJ Simpson was an egotistical maniac before, then you may want to give this book a read. If you don't think OJ could've done it, again, you may want to read this book. I hated OJ's retelling of lies but loved reading inside the mind of a killer and I love that the Goldman family published it. 10/10.

KennethTolesJr OJ did it. What's crazy is that even though there a lot of African American people on his side publicly, there A LOT who truly believe he did it. I did a paper on him in high school and had to interview a lot of people for it. (edited) 7y
ThatNeilGuy The OJ in America series that aired this year is AMAZING. 7y
LitLogophile I listened to this and had the same observations as you --- OJ's lies/excuses make him look even more guilty. It's fascinating to read though. 7y
See All 7 Comments
ElizaTodd @KennethTolesJr I've heard that! So many documentaries that I've seen state that most of his jury even believed he may have done it. Such a crazy case, that's a paper that I would love to write! Lol 7y
ElizaTodd @ThatNeilGuy I agree! I loved that series so much @lostlogophile It's really so obvious that he's lying lol 7y
ultrabookgeek I always wonder why the family even published the book - it seemed disrespectful to write and find a publisher on OJ's part, right that the family blocked the book but creepy and weird they published it. I don't get the whole OJ murder fascination and I grew up in the midst of it. I never understand why it kept being dragged out and rehashed. 7y
ElizaTodd @ultrabookgeek I totally understand! It's definitely become a topic of discussion of why the family would even publish it, but the family does address in this book that they wanted the world to read his lies, even if it was a crazy thing to do. I just find it interesting because it's a great example of how outside social influences can sway a court decision when that should never happen, ever. It does drag on though, people always want more info. 7y

I wasn't super familiar with the OJ case when I started this book and this book is DEFINITELY catered to those who are knowledgeable about the case. The front and back matter by the Goldmans, lawyers, and ghostwriter are heavily biased, which provided a jarring juxtaposition with OJ's manuscript. The genre of confession/nonfiction/maybe-fiction is super weird, but the voice was interesting and it moved quickly. 3.5/5

If I Did it: Confessions of the Killer | O. J. Simpson, Goldman Family
Pickpick

I deem this book a pick because I think it's a telling insight into the mind of a narcissist and most likely a cold-blooded killer. "The Night In Question" chapter is weird. If he didn't commit the murders, why would he even describe them? Why not describe what he actually did that evening? It takes a very arrogant & self-obsessed person to "imagine" what it would have been like had he murdered his ex-wife and her friend.

Smangela What's excellent is that proceeds from this book do not benefit OJ Simpson but rather the Goldman family. Further, the end of the book has a list of various foundations and organizations and their contact information such as organizations for victims of abuse. 7y
tpixie @Smangela that is great!! 7y

The chapter OJ alleges is "fiction." Very interesting read so far. It reads like a narcissist wrote it. Insisting that Nicole blamed him for everything but was really herself at fault for everything and that he was the picture of perfection. To me, that comes across as denial and someone lying, at the very least, to themselves.

ScrappyMags It's so ridiculous that everyone knows he did it... ugh... at least he's in jail for SOMETHNG! 7y
Smangela @ScrappyMags Preach!! I only vaguely remember it happening; I remember my family having the coverage on from the trial. I clearly remember the outrage when he was going to put this book out. And then I listened to a podcast about it and I wanted to know more about the case. I feel so awful for the victims and their families! (edited) 7y
ScrappyMags @Smangela I was in college at the time and I remember everyone was huddled around radios or tvs (lol no iPhones!!) and ppl were in shock. I remember it being a very racially divided case. 7y
Smangela @ScrappyMags that is what I've seen in my readings too - how unfortunate :( 7y

I've been feeling a little rough lately physically and mentally so my boyfriend let me open one of my Christmas gifts early to cheer me up and it really, truly did! I started listening to this because I have an unexpectedly long commute lately, and I was pleasantly surprised about why this book exists and what the profit goes to. If you want to hear why O.J. committed a double murder, this book is basically a confession. It's odd to read and infuriating at points, but consider it if you're interested in criminal law, or psychology in general, because it's actually pretty raw. Free on Audible Channels w/ Prime

I've always been very curious about this book, but not curious enough to spend $14.99, or whatever the price was. Today it's $0.99; excellent.

razmanda I still don't want to pay even that much. I thought there was a prohibition that didn't allow people to profit from their crimes in this way? Or maybe because he phrased it as "if" he can skate around that. 8y
KrisConstantReader @razmanda the Goldman family fought because of that judgment they had against him and won--the book is now theirs. They are the ones who ultimately released it, Simpson gets zero from it. 8y
razmanda @KrisConstantReader cool, good to know! 8y
KrisConstantReader @razmanda yeah, I wouldn't have even paid $0.99 if he were getting the proceeds. 8y
