Eating The Cheshire Cat
Eating The Cheshire Cat: A Novel | Helen Ellis
12 posts | 11 read | 17 to read
The debut novel by the author of American Housewife. Eating the Cheshire Cat lures us into a world of perfectly planned parties and steep social ladders, where traditional rites of passage take unpredictable and horrifying turns as three girls and their overbearing mothers collide. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, beauty is as beauty does, with axes and knives and killer smiles. Sarina Summers and her mother will stop at nothing to have it all. Nicole Hicks harbors a fierce obsession with Sarina, which repeatedly undermines Mrs. Hicks's ambitious goals. Bitty Jack Carlson, a nice girl from the wrong side of the tracks, is caught in the crossfire but struggles to succeed outside the confines of this outrageous yet eerily familiar Southern community. It's survival of the fittest. Which girl will come out on top? Covering everything from summer camp to the University of Alabama's Homecoming game, this fast-paced and unforgettable novel will keep readers guessing until the bitter end.

This story was insane with an ending even crazier. Lots of girl/mom drama. Highly recommended if you like catty dark comedies. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My #TitlesAndTunes picks for September.

In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, beauty is as beauty does, with axes and knives and killer smiles. A story about three girls and their overbearing mothers.

For Tunes, I chose Mad Hatter by Melanie Martinez.

I really liked this book. It was SUPER dark, but a really interesting read. It definitely shows an extreme of the dangers of bullying and how mean girls can be and what can end up being the outcome. I loved the Alice references and the ending was exactly what I wanted it to be. Excellent writing and the story was truly unique!

1. My worst slump was right after we moved to Texas. I didn't read anything for almost a year.
2. Re-reading Little Women, which is a childhood favorite.
3. Either a fantastical made up world or the Southern US.
4. See the tagged book for both the title and cover.
5. @Jinster Welcome to Litsy, feel free to play along if you'd like.

I've had this one on my shelf since I was 17!! 😱 I am 31! Seriously time for a re-read. It used to be one of my favorites. ❤️ modern Southern Gothic is a fav genre of mine.

LauraBeth 😂😂I'm 45 and bought this when it came out - so not sure how old I was 😀 after reading American Housewife, I need to take a look at this one again 7y

@fern you asked whether this giant inflatable cat I posted last week is also creepy at night.

I drove by again tonight at your request and the answer is an emphatic HOLY SH*T YES IT'S CREEPY AF AT NIGHT. 🙀😸😼

I am finding a new route back from therapy because what the honest f*ck is this. 😂

Mehso-so

I immediately ran out and got this book after I read American Housewife (which I loved to pieces). And this book was great- funny and darkly mordant (really, really dark!) Mean girls, Southern edition. There were moments when I was actually wincing. I loved American Housewife so much more, though.

Next on deck. Because I loved American Housewife so so much!

LauraBeth I bought that book when it was published and it's been on my TBR since. I need to read it! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @LauraBeth I won't confess how many books like that I have...?. But I believe that books are just waiting for "the right moment" to be read. 8y
LauraBeth Very true @CherylDeFranceschi! Sometimes I wish when I buy a book I can hear my future self tell me the truth: "this book will sit on your shelf unread for 15 years. However, you will read her second novel and then remember that you bought this..." 8y
