Picked this up as a freebie from a conference and it sat so long on my bookshelf that I totally forgot the tag line: “Why is tonight different from all other nights? Tonight we kill dad.“ The Jacobson siblings believe that killing their overbearing father Julian will give their mother peace following her terminal cancer diagnosis. A good example of a book where none of the characters are particularly likable.

SaunteringVaguelyDownwards It's set in a near-future (2022!) backdrop of increasing anti-Semitism in the US as Israel has been obliterated and parceled out to the countries of Iran, Syria, and Lebanon, and this fear is woven through the interpersonal struggles of the Jacobson siblings. I thought that the first segment was trying too hard in its vocabulary/style, and then realized that Levinson was using that style to demonstrate playwright Jacob's thought patterns. 3y

#2019Book69
This family drama shifts perspectives among the three Jacobson children and their mother as they all plan ways to murder the family patriarch without getting caught. The story starts at a pace that‘s almost too slow, but picks up about 50 pages in and has a strong finish. The characters are memorable and frequently slip between lovable and impossible to like.

SamanthaMarie Wow! This is an interesting premise. 5y

Dark morning before the city awakens, a book, a cup of coffee, and food courtesy of my girlfriend. The plot description on this sounds so interesting I couldn‘t help but move it to the top of the pile.

Surprise! I just went to get something out of my car and found these books! My book club friend was getting rid of some books. She said she had too many?!?! 😂so I took them off her hands. I have read Dead Letters and In the Garden of Beasts, but have not read any of the others. Has anyone else read any of these? Any duds or already read books will go in my #littlefreelibrary.

MicheleinPhilly I See You is a very creepy psychological thriller. I loved it. 7y
Lauren_reading I loved I See You and my mom can't stop raving about A Dogs Purpose 7y
Mdargusch I will keep I See You then @MicheleinPhilly and @LaurenReads. Do you know if a Dogs Purpose is a sad animal story? I usually steer clear of those. 7y

Karkar @Mdargusch Dogs purpose is sad and wonderful all at the same time. It will make you cry 7y
Mdargusch @Karkar thanks for the 😢heads up. 7y
Mdargusch I know @emilyhaldi. She has her bookshelves filled with crystal pieces instead of books! Of course she doesn't have room for anymore books. 😂they are from Karen @Reviewsbylola 7y
Reviewsbylola Who is Karen and how does she get so many ARCs? 7y
Mdargusch Karen west. @Reviewsbylola her daughter does a YA blog and they go to book conferences. 7y

I mostly enjoyed this novel about a highly dysfunctional family with a light dystopian backdrop told from four perspectives. I do think one whole section could have been eliminated as the story, and especially the dialogue, began to feel repetitive. Overall, it was entertaining.

Cinfhen I was mixed on this one! I agree, It had its moments ~ good & bad 😐 7y

#AprilBookShowers This story features the neurotic overly stereotyped Jacobson #siblings who have gathered in 2022 LA to celebrate Passover & cook up a way to kill their overbearing father. Such potential but ultimately this book did itself in with too much "shtick" (nonsense) and just way too long. Between pan & so-so but I wouldn't rush to read ...Also book fits today's #lyricalApril prompt for #holiday #Passover2017

At the festival, my first panel was Time for Payback: Novels about Revenge with Amy Gentry and David Samuel Levinson. I don't have a picture because I ended up in the front and that felt awkward. Both authors were funny and interesting. When I had them sign my books, I pitched Litsy to them. 🤓Gentry told me to read hers on vacation or at least not start it just before bed. These and the other books I picked up will most likely be on my May TBR.

Clearly my daughter & I do not share the same brand of humor or maybe it's generational but I'm enjoying this trag-com novel, which she hated. It's 2022, Israel no longer exists & anti-semitism runs rampant. The Jacobson family has gathered in Los Angles to celebrate Passover and more importantly decide the best way to off their belligerent father! I'm half way through, lots of laugh out loud passages but some cringe worthy ones too.

Reggie Wow lol. 7y
Bookzombie The author was at our book festival yesterday and he is so funny and sarcastic in person. I bought the book and he signed it. I can't wait to read it. (edited) 7y

At times, I felt the promotion for this book -- anti-semitism running rampant in 2022 -- was a poorly guided, alarmist even, method of promotion. At the base, it's a book about three siblings who must kill their father to save their mother. It can drag at times, but there are shiny pieces every now and then that offer redemption. Still, plenty of crud-rocks lodged in there, too. 😒 Honestly, I wanted to enjoy it more than I did.

#AprilBookShowers My #AprilTBR although I never REALLY keep to my list...top five are ARC's bottom from my own TBR, almost done Behind Her Eyes, one is for book club and the rest will fill challenges. Wishing everyone a wonderful new month full of reading and joy 🌺🌻🌷🌼🌹

GypsyKat I have a hard time sticking to my reading lists, too! Unless it's a series, because once I start I'm compulsive about finishing it. 😉 7y
Cinfhen I'm having so much trouble with a few of my ARC's @ferskner and one of them is 7y

ferskner It's definitely not the fastest paced book! It took me a while to get through, but I thought it was worth it in the end. 7y
erzascarletbookgasm So many good books! Enjoy! 7y
Melissa_J I'm not good at sticking to my TBR list either 😊 I'll be curious for your thoughts on Minds of Winter as it is sitting on my shelves waiting to be read, and The Shadow Lands, which I've got on my wish list. 7y
Tamra I've been meaning to pull Brief Wondrous Life from my stack for years. 😖 Maybe this time!? (edited) 7y
Cinfhen @Melissa_J I was hoping you'd get to them first & let me know!!! 7y
Cinfhen Thanks @erzascarletbookgasm I'm nervous about those ARCs, I keep carrying them over month to month...😬 7y
Cinfhen @Tamra it's so popular, don't know why I keep putting it off....I've started it a bunch of times but the footnotes keep messing with me🙄 7y
Tamra @Cinfhen footnotes?? Hmmmm, not usually crazy about them. 7y
Cinfhen I know, unexpected and in the first twenty pages @Tamra 😬I need to JUST look past that 7y
Melissa_J @Cinfhen ha! Maybe I'll try to read Minds of Winter this month then 😉 7y

Finished this right before its pub date! Now I knew this one wasn't going to be a book for me, but I pushed on anyway. I picked this up because I thought it was a dystopia novel ... well ... it is & it isn't. Set in 2022, it covers the growing anti-Semitic feelings in America and expands on it. Random attacks are happening, and it isn't safe to be Jewish anymore. This is the story of one family celebrating the holidays one last time. 7/10 for me!

I found this story of children rallying together to murder their abusive father actually quite humorous and enjoyable. It is told from four different perspectives as we learn the reasons each person has for wanting their father dead. This is set amidst a backdrop of the future where anti-sematism is rampant and Jewish people are once again becoming the target of hate crimes. If you're into family drama and morbid humor I would recommend this book.
