Loved most of the stories in this brilliant collection about people who choose to leave/or are forced out of their comfort zones. The stories didn't ever go as expected and the slightly unresolved endings hinted at complicated truths. It's been on my #tbr for years. I was finally inspired to read it as @ReadingEnvy gave the collectionna 5 ⭐ rating on Goodreads. She always had excellent taste. ❤️ #rememberingjenny @Centique

Centique It‘s so lovely to see these popping up in my feed 💕 Makes me tear up a bit too! This looks like a really good one. 2y

Sunny Saturday reading. Just finished the title story and can see why collection was so acclaimed when it first published.

jlhammar Yay! So glad you're enjoying it. Great collection. 2y

Best collection of short stories I have ever read. The stories and characters made a huge impression on me. Though the stories are short, the characters are very much three dimensional.
I highly recommend ZZ Packer if you like to read short stories.

quote
TheOracleOfKellphi

To those who also get excited when seeing city skylines, Z. Z. Packer sees you: “Her insides jumped when she saw the skyline. She tried to figure out why it hit her so hard. They were just buildings. But in each one, someone worked, someone sang, someone complained... The buildings breathed and exhaled possibilities; that was why a skyline like this one could stop your heart.... as [it] seemed to whisper, ‘You too are possible.‘”

quote
TheOracleOfKellphi

“I knew how one eventually accustoms oneself to the physical world‘s lack of sympathy: the buses that are still running late, the kids who play in the street, the clock that won‘t stop ticking for the person who‘s gone.”

Edit: after the first story, I felt this book had great promise, and I hyped it up in my original review. But it fell so short of expectations—so much so that I had to completely rewrite this. This just called for too much reading between the lines that I wasn‘t willing to do. Also very much disliked how EVERY story ended on a, “... That‘s... it?” note. Probably more my fault than the author‘s writing, though. Just couldn‘t do it.

I have taken to pairing books for reading. Does anyone else do this? I am truly enjoying the contrast between these two authors and styles. #bookpairings

SqueakyChu I was just thinking about how much I loved Drinking Coffee elsewhere since today is National Coffee Day. I also just got that same Eggers book out of the library this week! Synchronicity? 6y
MsLeah8417 @SqueakyChu I love that! 😊 6y

Billypar @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Ha- yes, that does sound like a warning sign 😂 My last post ran over the word limit so I had to sacrifice an 'actually'- Litsy might help me kick the habit! 6y
ValerieAndBooks OMG this made me realize I used “actually “ in my comment about the Brookner book 😂! 6y

I didn't love it but I didn't dislike it either. Maybe I became too attached to the characters because I wish there was an epilogue for each story especially the stories with young characters. I want to know what they did immediately after each story & who they are/were as adults.

quote
amma-keep-reading

" We had all been taught that adulthood was full of sorrow and pain, taxes and bills, dreaded work and dealings with whites, sickness and death."

From the short story titled Brownies

SqueakyChu Brownies was my favorite story of this collection and a short story I will long remember. I loved the stories in this book. (edited) 6y

BookishFeminist @Soubhiville Yes! It's such a soothing color. Though I tend to be drawn to red and/or yellow books actually, I just think publishing defaults to blue a lot. Not that I'm complaining. 💙📘 8y
BookishFeminist @brendanmleonard @Laalaleighh Thanks! It was a random purchase at a Greek festival! It's a replica of an antique vase from Ancient Greece. 😍 I got it for super cheap, like $15, because there's a crack down the other side that wasn't that noticeable- it normally would have been $100 and worth every penny for this artist's beautiful work! 8y
BookishFeminist @Gleefulreader @RealLifeReading @JPeterson @carol @DebinHawaii Thanks! Love all the blues from everyone's posts the other day 💙📘 8y

This book actually got a lot of hype when it was published back in 2003 but has since faded into the shadows. The storytelling is wonderful. I think ZZ Packer is a treasure and more people need to know about her. Says the woman who allows her cats on the kitchen table 😺#augustphotochallenge #underhypedbooks

MrBook Great pic! 😻😻😻 8y
cariashley If there's a way to stop cats from getting on the kitchen table, I'd like to know. 🙄 8y

SusanInTiburon @cariashley A simple plant mister or spray bottle filled with the water works wonders... 💦🙀 8y
LauraBrook @SusanInTiburon Not in my house, but I'm glad it works somewhere! 😂😂😂 8y
LauraBeth @cariashley, @SusanInTiburon, @LauraBrook - Part of my issue is that my 16 year old cat will only sleep on the table ☹️ I don't have the heart to spray her or to make her get down. But because of my lack of discipline with her - my other cat sees it as acceptable behavior 🙀 8y
Tanner My table is right by a large window that gets a fair amount of sun in the morning, so my cat likes to sun himself on the table. 8y
LauraBeth @Tanner I didn't help my cause any by putting a bird feeder outside the big window in front of the table 🐿🕊 8y

Bette Part of living with a cat. 😊😺 Our Harper sprawls on top of the frig and scares the crap out of me! 😳 8y
LauraBeth @Bette 😹😹😹 8y
SusanInTiburon @LauraBeth @LauraBrook I am super permissive with my cats, but when the younger started trying to snatch food off our guests' plates I felt I should at least make a show of some discipline! 😊 8y
LauraBrook @SusanInTiburon I hear you! The water bottle thing worked the first two times and after that...nope. My cats are in charge around here, and everyone knows it! The worst is when they try to drink out of someone else's cup (I always have a covered one), it's so embarrassing. ☺️ 8y
Bette @LauraBeth @LauraBrook oh my gosh, our 😺 Roger used to drink out of my glass cuz he knew I had cold water....I never thought a thing of it, until company. 😳😁😽 glad it's not just us! 8y
LauraBeth @SusanInTiburon, @Bette, @LauraBrook my cat likes to nonchalantly sit by a glass and then dip her paw into it... 8y
