Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass
Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass | Walt Whitman
As featured in AMCs Breaking Bad, given by Gale Boetticher to Walter White and discovered by Hank Schrader. I celebrate myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease....observing a spear of summer grass. So begins Leaves of Grass, the first great American poem and indeed, to this day, the greatest and most essentially American poem in all our national literature. The publication of Leaves of Grass in July 1855 was a landmark event in literary history. Ralph Waldo Emerson judged the book the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom America has yet contributed. Nothing like the volume had ever appeared before. Everything about it--the unusual jacket and title page, the exuberant preface, the twelve free-flowing, untitled poems embracing every realm of experience--was new. The 1855 edition broke new ground in its relaxed style, which prefigured free verse; in its sexual candor; in its images of racial bonding and democratic togetherness; and in the intensity of its affirmation of the sanctity of the physical world. This Anniversary Edition captures the typeface, design and layout of the original edition supervised by Whitman himself. Todays readers get a sense of the ur-text of Leaves of Grass, the first version of this historic volume, before Whitman made many revisions of both format and style. The volume also boasts an afterword by Whitman authority David Reynolds, in which he discusses the 1855 edition in its social and cultural contexts: its background, its reception, and its contributions to literary history. There is also an appendix containing the early responses to the volume, including Emersons letter, Whitmans three self-reviews, and the twenty other known reviews published in various newspapers and magazines. This special volume will be a must-have keepsake for fans of Whitman and lovers of American poetry.

On May 15, 1855, Whitman registered the title Leaves of Grass with the clerk of the United States District Court, Southern District of New Jersey, and received its copyright. The first edition was published on July 4, 1855, in Brooklyn, at the printing shop of two Scottish immigrants, James and Andrew Rome, whom Whitman had known since the 1840s.

#44-46 of my year and I‘m going to read 3 of my short, but brilliant I‘m sure, books so that I can stay ahead of my goodreads goal and not feel rushed when I read my longer books 😅 I have read Catcher in the Rye way back in high school but I‘m due for a refresher course. Phoebe was always my favorite so it‘ll be nice to revisit as an adult now.

Caffeinated_Reader On page 59 and I don‘t know what I expected but it wasn‘t this lol I knew it was poetry but I guess I assumed it was a book of different poems. This is what I get for not looking into the books I read 😅 I just pick them up and dive in! 3y
Caffeinated_Reader At first I was like, what the heck did I get myself into!?! But then as I opened my mind and heart to what I was reading I could feel the love and humanity radiating off the pages. I went into this little book not knowing anything about it and I assumed it was a book of different poems but it was so much more than that. I loved it. 3y
Caffeinated_Reader I think especially in the times we are currently in it‘s nice to be reminded of our humanity and compassion. It‘s especially important to remember the love of all things and that everyone is deserving of love, even if they believe differently than you or sin “worse” than you. I liked this so much. 3y

I admit I was sceptical at first. Who does one translate poems? I read Whitman in English first and loved his texts. But how would they sound in German?

Well, there was no need to be afraid. It's a great translation, that respects the original and transports Whitmans feelings and depths. One travels through Americas wilderness with him, goes to War and gets old.

A book worth reading over and over again.

I managed to survive my first book of poetry. I read the first edition from 1855, and it seems the better edition is the deathbed edition. I plan to read the deathbed at some point, but I think I need some more experience with poetry before I dive back into Whitman.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I can honestly say I very rarely followed Whitman‘s line of thinking in his poetry. The longer the poem, the harder it was to follow the train of thought. I‘m just proud of myself for making it through. This was a mental exercise more than anything else. #WaltWhitman #LeavesofGrass #DrQuinnReadingList #BlameDrMike #poetrymatters 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m definitely going to read the deathbed edition, I even have a copy of it ready to go, but I need some more time with poetry before I try Whitman again. Hopefully in a few months or maybe even at the beginning of 2021 I‘ll understand it better. Fingers crossed. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics it takes a bit!!! For fun watch With Honors the movie the way it‘s portrayed in there is a interesting think piece. I remember when I first read Sara Teasdale I was literally WTH did I just read and Ohmyword I love it 🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ Whitman was like that for a bit. Now it‘s like a worn out comfortable leather jacket. I‘m so glad you stuck with it, it‘ll come up in books and things and you‘ll say HEY I KNOW THAT! ❤️ 3y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m still trying to figure out why Sully chose to read that on Dr. Quinn. At one point he tells Brian he doesn‘t have any book smarts, but clearly he does. lol 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 😂🤷🏽‍♀️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Was he reading Song of myself ?? Mr Book Hippie prefers Hemingway‘s lines 🤣 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣 Yes he was. 🤣😂🤣 That‘s how I knew that one part wasn‘t about the ocean. 🤣😂🤣 He read I Sing the Body Electric, too. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics 🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼score! 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣 I think Sully was hiding the fact he was a genius and didn‘t need school, so Brian would go. It‘s the only logical explanation. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I was working 72 hours a week when that was on so I never saw it 🤣 my friend was hooked and gave me “reports” during shift change ...so I feel like I watched it ! 3y
TheBookHippie She never mention Whitman I can‘t wait to see her for our monthly visit now! 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie 🤣😂🤣 The show was on Amazon Video until a few weeks ago. I‘m hoping it comes back soon. That‘s really odd, seeing that the episode where Sully reads Whitman is called “The Library” and some books get burned, but then a few seasons later, Walt Whitman actually comes to Colorado Springs and Dr. Mike treats him. He was a major plot point twice. Beth Sullivan must be a Whitman fan. lol (edited) 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I‘ll watch for it to return I think our library has it ..must investigate ! 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie it‘s a good show if strong female lead characters and period pieces are your thing. Sully doesn‘t read Whitman until the 3rd season I think, and Whitman doesn‘t come visit until the 5th season, I think. Still, good stuff all over. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have this little problem called insomnia 🤦🏽‍♀️ always looking for new stuff and Netflix ditched Frasier 😭 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh, you and me both. Dr. Quinn is great for that!!! She does not stand for these Wild West men and their sexism. 3y
Butterfinger You should be proud. That was a huge accomplishment. 3y
GingerAntics @Butterfinger this was the first, 1855, edition, so it‘s actually much shorter. I think it‘s only got 12 poems on it. The deathbed edition is much larger, but hopefully I‘ll be properly prepared for it when I do read it. 3y

TheBookHippie He is my heart! I saw his original works this summer I went to TWO EXHIBITS in NYC ... 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie oh I always love seeing the original writing of authors, especially before computers came along because they‘re handwritten. There is something slightly lost in the printing process, I think. There is like an added bit of the spirit or soul of the writer when you see their work in handwriting. 3y
Scochrane26 Wendell Berry still writes by hand & won‘t use a computer. (edited) 3y
GingerAntics @Scochrane26 love it! I know Gaiman does as well. There are some that still do. Heck, the Harry Potter books (at least the first ones) were hand written first. Would love to see some of those draft pages. I think it‘s rare now, almost a lost art. I love when authors write by hand, though. 3y

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie That‘s cool! What an awesome tradition to have. This is making me feel very poetry stupid. For whatever reason, when I read it, I never remember what I read. If I reread it, it‘s familiar and I know I‘ve read it, but I don‘t remember it like a remember a narrative or something. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I have always loved poetry it has always spoken to me. I always felt there was someone out there who thought deeply in words as much as I do and gets lost in them. It takes a bit I think and if you reread it it‘s new everytime ❤️ I think I‘ve always applied poetry to my life and emotion which gives it a personal narrative. 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m kind of that way with music, which is basically poetry set to music, so I get that. I think the more I read poetry, the more it will start clicking. Hopefully. What edition do you guys read? I‘m kind of confused between the 6 different editions and all the extra poems after the first version. I‘m reading the original version, I may have to look into the “deathbed” version. I don‘t see how both can be the definitive edition. 3y

“Loafe with me on the grass...loose the stop from your throat.” I finally got around to reading this poetry collection and I‘m happy I did. It feels much more contemporary and is more sexual and physical than I expected. I loved the mix of the natural world and then the people who inhabit it. It‘s clear how different this body of work is from other poets of the time and is worthy of its praise.
