Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass
Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass | Walt Whitman
As featured in AMCs Breaking Bad, given by Gale Boetticher to Walter White and discovered by Hank Schrader. I celebrate myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease....observing a spear of summer grass. So begins Leaves of Grass, the first great American poem and indeed, to this day, the greatest and most essentially American poem in all our national literature. The publication of Leaves of Grass in July 1855 was a landmark event in literary history. Ralph Waldo Emerson judged the book the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom America has yet contributed. Nothing like the volume had ever appeared before. Everything about it--the unusual jacket and title page, the exuberant preface, the twelve free-flowing, untitled poems embracing every realm of experience--was new. The 1855 edition broke new ground in its relaxed style, which prefigured free verse; in its sexual candor; in its images of racial bonding and democratic togetherness; and in the intensity of its affirmation of the sanctity of the physical world. This Anniversary Edition captures the typeface, design and layout of the original edition supervised by Whitman himself. Todays readers get a sense of the ur-text of Leaves of Grass, the first version of this historic volume, before Whitman made many revisions of both format and style. The volume also boasts an afterword by Whitman authority David Reynolds, in which he discusses the 1855 edition in its social and cultural contexts: its background, its reception, and its contributions to literary history. There is also an appendix containing the early responses to the volume, including Emersons letter, Whitmans three self-reviews, and the twenty other known reviews published in various newspapers and magazines. This special volume will be a must-have keepsake for fans of Whitman and lovers of American poetry.

Small but really interesting exhibition at the NYPL exploring the influences on Whitman‘s work, and his literary legacy. On until July 27th if you‘re passing through.

Leftcoastzen Would love to see this ! 2mo

On one hand, it felt purposeful reading such a classic. However, I just don‘t think I‘m highbrow enough to truly appreciate classics like this! I really identified with bits of it, but then other bits were a challenge. Rating is more a reflection of me than this work.

Attended an event today at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The speakers discussed the plans for the year long celebration of Walt Whitman to mark the bicentennial of Walt Whitman, America‘s “poet of democracy”. Now, I need to read Leaves of Grass!

Leftcoastzen Love leaves of grass ! 3mo
Leftcoastzen This may sound weird, but years ago ,I was reading Leaves of Grass on a city bus , the back bench seat , and his words , his connection to humanity, touched me in a way that was profound, timeless , made me feel otherworldly,I swear , I wasn‘t on something. You are in for a treat! 3mo
DivineDiana @Leftcoastzen Thank you! I am now moved to find a copy immediately! ❤️ 3mo

Beautiful. I think.
I‘m not a poetry aficionado but trying to broaden my horizons. Plus Wintersleep referenced Leaves of Grass in Amerika (Nova Scotia band).
So a pick for my first book of poetry...I think ;)

Cathythoughts I‘ve always loved the title of that poetry book 💚 12mo

📕I prefer signings and festivals, but no real fave - I like all bookish events. 😀

📗 Cotton candy - or maybe that‘s more of carnival food. 🤔

📘 YAY for poetry! 🙌🏻

Sophoclessweetheart I‘ve never been to a bookish event. Not since I was a school child. 😅 1y

Most likely not what was intended with today's prompt, but #carpediem will forever make me think of Dead Poets Society, and that makes me think of Shakespeare and Whitman. O Captain! My Captain!

If you're like me, you're empathetic and just want everyone to be civil; you're tough, independent and have a Napoleon complex. Perhaps then, you've lately found yourself walking around with all your defenses up because the world is greedy and sour even though it's easier to show compassion. Here are books I'll be (re)reading to help myself feel grounded and more connected with the person I usually am. Recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you.
You must travel it by yourself.
It is not far. It is within reach.
Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know.
Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and land.

I found a touching note from "Zach" who lives in New York in my Walt Whitman "Leaves of Grass" used book find today. Zach, I learned you feel NYC has taken everything from you and got you down. Just know, wherever you are, you make a difference and your words touched both me and my husband today. You make a difference. ?#zachyoumatter #nyc #waltwhitman #supportzach #solviturambulando #literature #book #leavesofgrass #loveeachother #ihopeyouareok

Slip covered and bound in green burlap, this is my favorite among my #VintageEditions (great idea for a hashtag @MrBook !) . The Introduction by Christopher Morley of this 1940 edition ends thusly: "To own Leaves of Grass, to have it available for emergency, and to read it as it deserves to be read, will always be a unique experience and a title to citizenship."

MrBook Oh my goodness!!! That is wonderful! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻 3y

Part 1 of my awesome, belated (almost a month late lol) b-day presents from my old boss & co-workers! A beautiful addition to my Penguin Drop Caps collection and a gorgeous needlepoint of my alma mater that my boss made. Love bookish presents and people who know you well enough to get them for you!

BookishFeminist Such thoughtful gifts! I love both the personalized needlepoint & all the drop-caps books are swoon worthy 3y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist aren't they? My old coworkers were all amazing ladies and are great at giving gifts (mainly because we know everything that we each nerd out on!). One day I'll have all the drop caps editions. 😏 3y

I don't read a lot of poetry. I like poetry, I just choose to spend most of my time with fiction. This poem came into my head today though, and I haven't been able to shake it.

I'm not generally a fan of Whitman, but he does occasionally have just the right words for an occasion. School is finally out for summer! Today I'm going to loaf and watch the grass grow.

"I exist as I am, that is enough." ? #HBD to Walt Whitman! This rare copy of Leaves of Grass, illustrated by Rockwell Kent is currently at home in our Rare Book Room. But it is up for adoption!

Sydsavvy Oh gorgeous! 3y
Donna_sBookMinute Hmmm. I'll have to check this one out. Sounds like it's on the order of "Leaves of Gold." Or maybe the other way around. I'll check the copyright on my copy. 3y
Dmbulan Has anyone read "The Wanderer"? It is about someone who finds Leaves of Grass and begins a journey of wandering and discovering secrets and life. It seems interesting but I haven't jumped in yet. I love Whitman and would adore a copy like the one pictured 3y
