Crime and Punishment
Crime and Punishment | Fyodor Dostoevsky
Raskolnikov, a destitute and desperate former student, wanders through the slums of St Petersburg and commits a random murder without remorse or regret. He imagines himself to be a great man, a Napoleon - acting for a higher purpose beyond conventional moral law. But as he embarks on a dangerous game of cat and mouse with a suspicious police investigator, Raskolnikov is pursued by the growing voice of his conscience and finds the noose of his own guilt tightening around his neck. Only Sonya, a downtrodden prostitute, can offer the chance of redemption.

An #amazing book made all the more amazing with the #littleraskols 😈 This is a great episode of In Our Time, with useful insight into both the writer & the book: https://bbc.in/2R271T0 One of the guests is Oliver Ready, whose translation is the version I read.

Thank you for an amazing era of musical photo challenges, @Cinfhen ! When I first joined Litsy it was how I felt welcome & made new bookish friends. I appreciate that so much ❤️ #MOvember

Day 19 - #ClassicYouEnjoyed #GratefulReads #CrimeandPunishment #FyodorDostoyevsky

A must read classic! Masterpiece! Riveting!

Murder story, told from a murder‘s point of view, that implicates even the most innocent reader in its enormities. It is a cat-and-mouse game between a tormented young killer and a cheerfully implacable detective. It is a preternaturally acute investigation of the forces that impel a man toward sin, suffering, and grace.

OriginalCyn620 I have not read this classic yet! 3w

Is it #humannature that a guilt-ridden criminal experiences mental torture, and the tormenting guilt is much more terrible than actual imprisonment itself? In the story, Dostoevsky depicts the protagonist as so.

I reread my old college copy of this classic because I decided to teach it this year. I went through a Russian Literature period in my teens and burned through most of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. I hope to inspire the same interest in my students. The struggles with conscience and morality are still relevant. I would like to read some other translations of this work for comparison.

tpixie Awesome! Hope the students love it!!! 3mo

Raskolnikov is a bundle of nerves and anxiety, which makes him – and I know I shouldn‘t say this, given that he is a literal axe murderer, but I don‘t care – totally relatable! Crime and Punishment follows his moral dilemmas leading up to a murder(s), and his complete psychological denouement afterwards. It‘s compelling stuff! #WanderingJune
I started reading Crime and Punishment once, but never finished it. 🤷🏼‍♀️I was a bit stumped on this prompt & didn't want to repeat my pick of the streets Tokyo from two years ago so I did some Googling. I read that many of the streets & place names in Dostoevsky's novel were masked by abbreviation to placate the Russian censors. So the way it is written, the St. Petersburg in the book is a place #WhereTheStreetsHaveNoName 🤔

WOW. This was so much more exciting than I was expecting, it made me think and feel so much, it was philosophical but never up itself like I thought it might. I could have followed these characters and agonised over what was going to happen to them for twice as long. The women were all breathtaking. Katerina made me deeply uncomfortable and frightened, and Sonya might be one of my favourite characters in all of literature now.

Kimzey I‘ve always meant to read this! Thanks for the reminder. 7mo

Mehso-so

I started reading this book a couple of times during the last ten years but never made it past page 100. Books, movies, newspapers kept referencing parts of Crime and Punishment, so "it has to be good, and so I must finish it". It's a long ride, too long for my taste. There are or two interesting ideas in the book, but it's not worth to read the 750 pages, as I could have read 3 more entertaining books in the same time. It's also a bit gloomy.

What a wonderful book for the lonely psychopath. Most memorable is the passage of the vivid nightmare of the drunken men and the horse. The exploration of one-on-one interrogation brings depth to interpersonal power Dynamics which provides a fun look into the stresses a murderer might experience to get away with the job. Good read for those interested in psychological thrillers.
