Anyone going to ALA this month? #litsylibrarians #librarians

Librarybelle I have an exhibits only pass for Saturday 4mo
melissanorr Me too @Librarybelle Let me know if you want to meet up. 4mo
Librarybelle I think that would be awesome! I‘m traveling with colleagues, and we‘re finalizing or schedule of what vendors to visit, when we‘re arriving and whatnot. Once I have a better timeframe for the day, I‘ll let you know. If you‘d like, we could communicate through email...my email is my Litsy username at gmail DOT com. 4mo

Have you heard of a book trailer? Like a movie trailer (preview), but for books! Shout out to clever #librarians (ahem @mrbook) & #libraries. Mooresville Public Library, Indiana, put together this very cool way to showcase books. It's launch day today for Woman 99. You have to watch this. So dang clever! https://youtu.be/MtZTkt986n0

DivineDiana Yes! Barnes and Noble has them on their website. And not sure how I found it, but I just watched one for the book that I am reading, The Alice Network today! 😲 7mo
lynneamch How neat @DivineDiana ! I really enjoyed the Alice Network. Greer and Kate Quinn are doing an event together tomorrow in Maryland for Kate's new book 7mo
DivineDiana I so wish I could be there! 7mo
Talewaggingreads Book Trailers are brilliant! Why didn't I think of that when I was teaching? 🤦‍♀️🎥🎬📚🤦‍♀️ 7mo

My Tuesday/Thursday group of 6th grade Lit Lunch is about a day away from finishing Small Spaces (they LOVED it!) so I‘m starting to think about our next book. They requested something “realistic and funny” so I‘m going to be book talking this stack and letting them vote.

I went to the library yesterday to pick up a couple of those graphic novels everyone's always raving about. ? #bookhaul #libraryhaul #blamelitsy #blameitonlitsy #ineedtogotoanotherbranch
Ps #litsylibrarians --> do you agree that graphic novels should be shelved in non-fiction? I understand the "why" ... I just disagree. ?

TheLudicReader I don‘t understand the “why”. Maybe if the graphic ‘novel‘ is a piece of non-fiction it belongs in that section, but otherwise why? 2y
Librarybelle At my library, we shelve graphic novels in fiction, unless of course it‘s a nonfiction graphic novel. But, I know a lot depends upon who‘s cataloging the book for the collection and who is selecting the book. We just found that patrons would find the books a lot easier if they were with the other fiction titles. 2y
Avanders @TheLudicReader They told me because it has art... so it's included in "art". ? @Librarybelle I completely agree -- much easier to find in fiction! Just makes logical sense ... 2y

ohyeahthatgirl In my library, we have a whole separate section. My branch is pretty large, though. 2y
JennAndrew I disagree with shelving them in non-fiction entirely, unless of course it‘s a non-fiction work. They‘re novels. We shelve them in their own section anyway (and someone just stole a load 😩😭), but it doesn‘t make much sense to me to put them in non-fic. We don‘t put picture books in children‘s non-fiction. 🤨🤔 2y
emilyhaldi Very interesting ... I would have never guessed to look for them in non-fiction 🤔 My library has most graphic novels in their own section with a few placed within fiction. 2y
JenlovesJT47 Saga, Locke and Key and Monsters are all 💚💚💚 2y
TheLudicReader Dumb way to categorize, if you ask me, @Avanders. But then, no one actually asked me, so there‘s that. (edited) 2y
Avanders @ohyeahthatgirl that makes sense to me! There's a separate comic section and manga section..... but they didn't put these there. 🤷🏽‍♀️ @JennAndrew Exactly! @emilyhaldi never. Which is why I was talking to someone at all 😁 @JenlovesJT47 I'm excited!! 💖💖 @TheLudicReader well... I asked you. 😉😁 2y

Pickpick

I don't know if this has come across anyone else's radar, but I wanted to bring it up. There is currently a petition for Orange County Public Library in Iowa to label all their LGBTQ books and refrain from buying more without the input of the residents. One of the books is tagged. I give it 5⭐️ and the review is on GR.

I know myself and other #litsyLibrarians feel for what this library is going through. I and many of us support you! 👇🏻

MelAnn So ridiculous!!! 2y
Libby1 Isn‘t Michael Caine‘s real name Maurice Micklewhite? 2y
Libby1 Just checked. It is! 2y

LibrarianRyan To read more about what is going on check out the following articles. Http://bit.ly/2EWQVkR (gazette) https://www.scribd.com/document/372060295/Orange-City-flier (petition on Squibed) and https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/2018/02/21/lgbtq-book-ban-controver... (Des Monies Register). As we celebrate world book day, no books should be made to feel separate, or the people who read them. (edited) 2y
LibrarianRyan @Libby1 that is kind of cool. 2y
LibrarianRyan @MelAnn @Libby1 I got side tracked putting up the links by a patron. They Re there now if you Re interested. (edited) 2y
Libby1 @LibrarianRyan - I was able to read one of the articles but couldn‘t get into the petition. Maybe because I‘m trying to access it from the UK? I hope the original movement doesn‘t succeed and these books aren‘t separated or censored. 2y
LibrarianRyan @Libby1 my URL shortness didn't work. I put the long addresses in. Should work now. 2y
Libby1 The petition appears to be IN FAVOUR of the separation of these books. I thought it was one against it. I‘m a Christian, and I find this sad and frustrating. They seem to be using faith as a weapon, and this angers and saddens me. 2y
LibrarianRyan @Libby1 I agree. Not only is the petition in favor but it was started by a physiologist. Also turns out it plays into the bill the would allows for religious exclusion in business practices. It's not a good thing. 2y
Libby1 No, not a good thing. I agree. That last article provides some clarity as well. The person who started the petition said it had been changed without his knowledge and took his name off of it. (edited) 2y

Reaching Forward South is a small support staff conference for Illinois libraries. This year our conference is in Edwardsville. And I'm giving away a free ticket and goody bag. You don't have to be an Illinois Librarian, we welcome Missouri, and Indiana as well. For this we are hosting a photo challenge. Play along if you want to win tickets or just for the fun. Tag me and use #RFS18 and let's all show off our libraries.

LitsyHappenings Sorry it looks like we missed helping you spread the word on this! We're a few days behind 😬😘 2y

It's not much, and no where near my fav display, but it's what I had and what the boss wanted. I could love to see other libraries Black History Month Displays. #litsylibrarians

Johanna414 I‘m still getting mine set up- moving a little slower these days. It‘s nothing fancy though, just a collection of books by African American writers 2y
Kaye I agree, I like visiting libraries, but it‘d be almost as good to see photos of other libraries. That‘s why I like posting photos of our libraries when I see something new or interesting. Shout out to all the Litsy Folks....can you show us your libraries ? Outside or in ? Displays, books, sales, anything. 2y

For all the #litsylibrarians out there, how would you categorize this book? It‘s the “true” life story of a cyclist defending his career against doping allegations. Since publication, he has now recanted it all & admitted guilt...fictionous non-fiction?

TheKidUpstairs 😂😂😂 It goes on a special shelf with 2y

LiteraryMind @Librarybelle yes you guys are! Thanks for all you do. Books would not be as fun and enjoyable without librarians! 2y
LiteraryMind @LibrarianRyan Haha I think both would be pretty great! 2y
LiteraryMind @MarticaMustRead glad you like it! No matter what people think, the truth is the truth! 👍🏻😊#LitsyLibrarians 2y
