#Falling Day 4: #LibraryFun in this ode to libraries by Nikki Giovanni. The Afterword adds another layer of complexity to the narrative as Nikki Giovanni paid tribute to Mrs. Long, the very first librarian who made sure to nourish her young poet‘s soul with delicious words – during the time of segregation. The story of Belle de Costa Green, the white passing African American personal librarian to JP Morgan, a collector of rare manuscripts & art, & the most well paid woman of her time.
A fascinating book of a woman I had never heard about. The tension in her story as she hides her background, the love she has for the rare books she collects was fantastic. But the last 1/2 spent way too much time on her love life, I wanted more of her work.🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑
#CharacterCharm Day 30: Augusta Baker educated herself and became the first Black person to earn a degree from SUNY Albany in library sciences and information studies. As the first Black #Librarian, she curated the James Weldon Johnson Memorial collection in 1944 to find uplifting stories about people of color. More here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-r3d
We have had more rain in the last few days than I got in my two weeks in England. I‘m a little miffed. 😂
But at least that means it‘s chocolate chip cookie weather. #AudioBaking
This could have been half as long as it was. Figured out the mysteries/twists fairly early on. Honestly it wasn‘t worth the effort of finding out how it played out.
This could have been a really good book however the author just tried to have too much going on.
Don‘t recommend
Such a nice summer of reading fun books. Now I‘m back to textbooks, and in the wee hours, too. 😊

This book had everything I love in historical fiction. It was well-written, well-researched, and had an admirable female main character. Its strong sense of time and place gave me a glimpse into a time in American history that I know little about. The entrenched, systemic racism was hard to read about, and so saddening, but it did serve to highlight Belle‘s incredible bravery and determination. ⬇️
