Levels of Life | Julian Barnes
post image
Mehso-so

Part memoir, part essay, part fiction, Barnes wrote about his own grief after the death of his wife. He wrote about the highs and lows in life - of two people being together; being apart; and then the enduring of loneliness.

I‘m very sorry to say that this book doesn‘t have many #levels to it... nothing happens. I made it 60% of the way through and still nothing had happened except a lot of basketball games. I really wanted to like this as I met the author at Ohioana and he was lovely! but I was bored 😕
#getmovin

Mdargusch Very sad. I was hoping it was good. 6y
TrishB But a lovely picture 😁 6y

Reviewsbylola Your pictures are 🙌🏻 6y
Reviewsbylola I‘m so nervous for this one now though. Maybe I will let it sit on my shelf unread so I never have to experience the disappointment. 6y
KateFulfordAuthor May I be so bold to recommend my debut - layered plot, well drawn characters and a humorous page turner 6y

Still trying to catch up on challenges and this had me going back through my GR history where i found this classic - a man has a car accident and whilst in a coma finds himself on a bridge of many levels which he negotiates whilst doctors try to treat him.
A brilliant book.

Centique You‘ve reminded me I need to read more Iain Banks! 6y
Moray_Reads This book is phenomenal. It's the only Banks I've read so far but I found it astonishingly good. 6y
andrew61 @Moray_Reads I've read a few including his personal account of a whisky tour - just wonder why didn't read more when he was alive. 6y

There are levels to being a confident cook, starting with being able to follow a recipe & have it turn out well. The next level is adapting recipes to make them work for your needs or taste even better. The highest level is having the confidence to create your own recipes. Experience & trial & error are what gets you there, but these books on flavor combinations really helped take my confidence in cooking to the next level.🥄📚

laurieluna I've just started getting recipe boxes to boost my cooking confidence. Both recipes have gone amazingly so far (granted they send out all the ingredients ready measured and an easy to follow recipe). Stacked the vegetarian one for when I want to dip my toes with some own recipe experimentation! 😄 6y
Cinfhen So true!! I‘m still at the beginners level 😉😘 6y

DebinHawaii @Cinfhen I think you are way beyond beginner! 🤗 6y
laurieluna @DebinHawaii it really is! And much more nutritious than our usual takeaways 😬 thank you for sharing these! 😊 6y

#GetMovin A super clever and fun thriller that combines 80s nostalgia with futuristic technology. Set in 2045, where the world is on the brink of collapse, Wade an average HS student joins a quest to find a digital treasure. By solving puzzles, opening gates and moving up #Levels, Wade is on his way to becoming the wealthiest person in the world. He just needs to stay alive! Great read and I‘m curious to see the film.

TrishB Still not seen either!! 6y
eanderson I thought it was ok! Good for a rainy, stuck in the house kind of day. It was really long though. I loved the book! 6y
Cinfhen Good to know @eanderson I heard movie and book are quite different 6y

CatGV I remember reading this when it came out in French about six years ago! I liked it, the concept is quite captivating but I never cared much for the characters. :( I just hope the movie is good! 6y
Cinfhen I‘ve heard the movie is different from the book but all the 80s nostalgia is felt! My kids liked it, but they didn‘t read the book. I think visually it must be be cool 🧐 @CatGV (edited) 6y

Penny has become one of my favorite authors. I‘m currently reading book 4, but plan to start from the beginning when I get the tagged book through #whodunitthesequel . Penny writes so many #levels and layers into her story, that I am sure you pick up on something new with each read. I‘m ready to find Three Pines...who‘s with me? #getmovin

Pamwurtzler I‘ll go! I‘m looking forward to re-reading that when it‘s my turn for #whodunitthesequel as well. 6y
Librarybelle @Pamwurtzler ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
2BR02B In your opinion, is this a series that must be read in order? I keep picking up random volumes at library sales, and haven't yet been motivated to buy them at full price in order to read chronologically. 6y
See All 18 Comments
Librarybelle @2BR02B I think it is. There are some situations that carry between the books, so it helps to know the build up from book to book. I bought the entire series, but picked up books as they became available through Book Outlet, so I didn‘t have to pay full price. Thrift Books may have copies available too. 6y
Pamwurtzler I think it helps if you read them in order, but I started with book 6 & then went back. 6y
TiredLibrarian @2BR02B I'd read in order if possible. There are plot and character developments that build from book to book. Love this series: want to go to Three Pines & visit Myrna's bookshop! 📚❤📚❤ 6y
Chellebearss I‘ve read the whole series and am sad that I have to wait until November for a new one 😢 6y
Librarybelle @Chellebearss I hate waiting for the next in the series...it always seems like a long wait! 6y
Chellebearss @Librarybelle it‘s the worst! 😂 Penny usually puts a new one out each August but she took time off after her husband died and this year it‘s November. I‘m surprised there is a new one at all this year 6y
Librarybelle @Chellebearss I agree...I‘m surprised too, but a very happy surprise! 6y
eanderson I‘ve been meaning to read this author! Great choice! 6y
Librarybelle @eanderson Thanks! She‘s definitely worth reading. 6y
RebelReader @Librarybelle I have 2 copies of The Cruelest Month and will send one to you if you email me your address at rebelreader1 at gmail. 6y
Librarybelle @RebelReader That is so sweet! I do already have a copy of The Cruelest Month, but thank you for the #payitforward gesture. This is one of the million reasons why I love Litsy! 6y
Mollyanna I‘ll head to Three Pines with you... I truly enjoyed rereading this for #whodunitthesequel too. I had read through Book 4, but it had been a while so decided to restart the series. I love going back to Three Pines! 6y
2BR02B @Librarybelle @Pamwurtzler @TiredLibrarian Thanks, that's good to know. And I hadn't even thought of checking Book Outlet, so thanks for the hot tip! 👍 6y
Cinfhen I‘ve been meaning to read this author for so long.... 6y
