A sweet, nostalgic coming-of-age with ‘Almost Famous‘ meets ‘Dirty Dancing‘ vibes. A 14 yr old from a conservative family, becomes the summer nanny to the little girl of a bohemian couple in the suburbs in the 70s. There just happens to be a rock star and his famous girlfriend staying with them too. Her eyes are opened, world is rocked and she‘ll never be the same. So much joy, music and love in this. Could be too sweet for some but I loved it! 💕

BarbaraBB I still need to tackle that prompt too. I am using the Beastie Boys book, otherwise I would have chosen this one!

Cortg I started this on audio and it‘ll work for #pop22 ~ a book that takes place during your favorite season! How have I not read a book this year that takes place during the summer 😂 1y

Oh, I adored this and I‘m so sad it ended! It was fab on audio too.

14 year old Mary Jane becomes the summer nanny for the Cone family, in the summer of 1975. Mary Jane‘s family are very strait-laced, and rather prejudiced even bigoted. They certainly don‘t show any affection for each other.

Dr Cone is treating a famous rock star for various addictions and Mary Jane gets drawn into their tumultuous lifestyle, which ends up changing her life.

squirrelbrain #pop22 #aboutabandormusicalgroup I adored gorgeous, naive Mary Jane, as well as Jimmy and Sheba and of course little Izzy. I could read a sequel! 1y
CarolynM Great review. I‘m tempted🙂 1y
BarbaraBB I am very tempted too!! 1y

Suet624 I forgot that I wanted to read this. 1y
charl08 Like @CarolynM I'm tempted too. 1y
JamieArc I really enjoyed this too. I listened to it earlier in the year and still think about Mary Jane. 1y
KarenUK Ooh, I was going to read Opal & Nev for this prompt, but I think I‘m switching to this! 1y
Caroline2 Sounds good. Stacked. 1y
Cinfhen I loved this on audio!!! I think you‘re gonna love it too @KarenUK 🫶🏼 1y
squirrelbrain @KarenUK - strictly speaking it‘s about 2 musicians but they are both in bands so I‘m counting it! 😁 And it is *so* much better than Opal and Nev. 1y
squirrelbrain @CarolynM @BarbaraBB @Suet624 @charl08 it might even make my top 20 favourite books of the year… or if not certainly somewhere near. (edited) 1y
squirrelbrain @Caroline2 - I nearly tagged you in my post as I think it‘s right up your street. 1y
squirrelbrain @JamieArc - she was so sweet wasn‘t she, but ballsy as well! 1y
Oryx Was going to stack this - turned out I already had 😃 1y
Deblovestoread One of my favorite audio reads of the year. Such fun! 1y

First things first, this was *not* Daisy Jones, as on the blurb. In fact, I nearly bailed a couple of times in the first half and would have probably done so if it wasn‘t for #pop22 #abookwithaconstellationinthetitle.

The first 20 pages introduced nearly 30 characters, as well as scattering around well-known names.

However, at almost exactly 50% I suddenly became more invested and interested and the second half was *much* better.

squirrelbrain Of course, this would also work for #aboutabandormusicalgroup 1y
rabbitprincess The blurb and cover art definitely seem to be trying for a Daisy Jones vibe! 1y
Megabooks Great review! I think I‘m still going to pass though. 1y
Caroline2 Yep. I felt exactly the same. 👍 1y
CarolynM Sounds good. I was put off by the Daisy Jones comparisons but I might have to reconsider.🙂 1y

At just under 11 hours I wasn‘t aware this was an abridged audio version of the Beatles Biography. I found it richly detailed and quite informative. As I listened, I realized I knew very little about the four lads from Liverpool. Wow, they were young when Beatlemania was at an all time high. This book gives a definitive look at the rise of the Beatles and shares the stories behind some of their more famous songs & albums. It also bares some 👇🏼

Cinfhen of the uglier sides of John, Paul and Yoko Ono. I was unaware of how consumed John Lennon was with psychedelic drugs. He seemed to be the most temperamental of the four. Audio narration was excellent. #POP22 #AboutABandOrMusicalGroup #NF22 #IAmRockAndRoll #Book2022 #CreateYourOwnPrompt #BookSetInTheDecadeOfYourBirthYear @BarbaraBB @Megabooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @KarenUK @jenniferw88 @RaeLovesToRead @Laughterhp @Cortg @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2y
KarenUK I recently watched the new 3 part documentary, Get Back, and that was about 9 hours! It focused entirely on them writing and recording their last album, and was SO fascinating! It was like a fly-on-the-wall study of nuances of human behavior, with all the friendship history, their creative genius, petty rivalries and frustrations etc under a microscope. Really worth watching. 2y
Cinfhen Was it Netflix @KarenUK ? I‘d be curious to watch the documentary. Ultimately It really was a sad story 😔They became more of a phenomenon than a band. Fame is a bitter pill 2y

TrishB John was not the all round good guy that his public persona still comes across as. Hubby loved the documentary that @KarenUK talked about (I found it a bit boring- but in Liverpool we know everything about The Beatles anyway 😁😁). 2y
KarenUK In US I think it‘s Disney+ only…. we signed on just for a month, to watch that and Hamilton! @Cinfhen It was DEFINITELY long, but I couldn‘t tear my eyes away…. @TrishB but is was all new to me! 2y
Cinfhen I REALLY hope to visit one day @TrishB and get the Beatles tour from you xxx I‘ll have to look for the documentary @KarenUK my son is good about finding the websites needed ☺️ 2y

Cathythoughts I‘m hearing all wonderful things about this book. Enjoy 2y
Cinfhen I really know very little about their early days @Cathythoughts so I‘m LOVING the backstory 💕🎶🎸 2y
TrishB I imagine there‘s a lot of Liverpool in the back story 😁♥️ 2y
Cortg I might have to check this one out! I‘ve already fulfilled that category but I‘m adding it to my TBR! 2y
Cinfhen I‘m LOVING IT @Cortg @TrishB exactly what I needed at the moment 2y

Music Is History | Questlove

This ended up on my radar after reading a best audiobooks of 2021 list. I enjoyed listening to this, but I‘m not sure what made it so special that it merited a place on that list. Perhaps if I were better versed in musical canon I‘d see more of the connections made between the songs he listed and the history he brought up, but as someone who isn‘t I was hoping this would be more of a multimedia experience with some of the more important songs 👇🏼

IndoorDame actually included because this listed the names of so many that it would have taken me at least a week to pause and listen to each one, so I had to just appreciate it for what I got out of it as it was. #Nonfiction2022 #ImRockNRoll #PopSugar2022 #AboutABandorMusicalGroup @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2y
