#TheBoxer in this story, is the German jew Max whom Liesl and her foster parents are hiding in the basement. After regaining some strength, he pretend boxes against Adolf Hitler to keep fit.

TrishB Great pick, from a great book ❤️ 5y
julesG @TrishB Still glad @MinDea persuaded me to join the #ZusakAMonth and read it. 5y
julesG It should be #MonthofZusak though 🙈 5y

Pickpick

Although I have issues with some of the German language and culture described in the book, I really liked it.

I'll certainly recommend it to anyone.

#ZusakAMonth @MinDea @EadieB

GingerAntics I was wondering about that. I don‘t remember much German, but some of it seemed really weird and even the translator couldn‘t quite make heads or tails of it. I still liked the story, though. 5y
MinDea So glad you liked it! Stinks that something so small as correct translation and cultural references aren't right in the book! 🤨 5y

About to finish my 8th hour. #25in5 @Andrew65

I've snorted with laughter at the swear words in German. Then was confused by some German sentences that didn't make sense, in German. Nobody would say it like that.

Overall, I'm enjoying this story very much, especially the narrator of the story being Death and the narrator of the #audiobook doing a really good job.

Sarah83 Was ist das denn oben rechts im Bild? Stoffe? 5y
julesG @Sarah83 Yep, Berge von Stoffen für meine Kinder. Ich hoffe ich kann sie damit zu je einem Pulli überreden 5y

Andrew65 Brilliant! 🙌 5y
MinDea Are you listening/reading it tranlsated into German? Or is there German in the story? I can't remember. 5y
julesG @MinDea There's lots of German in the story. Some correctly used, and some bits are translated back from English to German and hence make no real sense. A lot of the swear words don't make sense, also some of the dialogue between the children/teenagers; they are okay in English, but nobody would say it like that in German. Still, as I've said, I'm enjoying the book. 5y
MinDea Aaaahhhh, I totally forgot about that. I just picked it up and only 50 pages in but already coming across German. That stinks. Translated tranlations definitely aren't good. I hope it doesn't ruin/take away from the story for you. 5y
julesG @MinDea It is slightly annoying, but also funny. It makes me realise just how many differences in culture there are that can be noticed in small phrases. Also, you'll know when you get to it, German windows cannot and could not be slid open; they open like a door. 5y
MinDea Can I send you my copy and have you correct it? Make it accurate! 🤨😆😆😆 5y
julesG @MinDea 😂😂😂😂 5y
julesG @MinDea I'm looking forward to the discussion! 5y

Here's what I did all day, I made myself a sweater dress. My first time, hence it took me ages!

I listened to the tagged book from time to time and had to laugh a lot about all the swearing in German.

#audiocrafting #ZusakAMonth @MinDea

zsuzsanna_reads It's great! 5y
Redwritinghood Looks great! Nice job. 5y
GingerAntics Loved the swearing in German!!! Those words I knew. lol Your sweater dress looks good!!! (edited) 5y

laurieluna You look lovely! Love the colour ❤️ 5y
DivineDiana You are very talented! ❤️ 5y
julesG @GingerAntics Can't remember anyone saying Schweinskerl or even Schweinsmensch. Maybe my great-grandparents used those words, they would have been the same age as the foster parents. 5y
GypsyKat Wow!!! I‘m super impressed!!! It looks awesome!!! 5y
Yeah_I_Read Looks great! 5y
GingerAntics @julesG I had to go look those ones up. There are some that still seem to be in use. Although I think my German teacher lied to me. He told us the word they‘re saying is bastard meant pig. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
squirrelbrain Looks fab, you‘re so clever! 5y
Bklover Great job! You look wonderful! 5y
julesG @GingerAntics Yes, some are still used. Even Schweinskerl is still in use, but it's rare and it's meaning has changed. It does not mean dirty, rather more like arsehole. 5y
Kaye Very pretty. What talent you have ! How long did it take you ? I‘m such a slow knitter, and can only knit squares ⬛️◼️◾️▪️ 5y
JoScho So impressed! Nicely done! 🖤 5y
BeansPage Haha! Swearing in German just makes it sound even more hilarious 😂😂😂 5y
julesG @kaye I didn't knit this, it's sewn. Took me all day, from a print yourself pattern to finished sweater about 9 hours. Two hours were spent on cutting and taping the pattern together. 5y
julesG @kaye @JoScho Thank you! - - - @TheReadingMermaid I could teach you a few choice words. 😉 5y
BeansPage I actually know a few choice words. My second language is German 😉 5y
julesG @TheReadingMermaid So, you're what? My opposite? My second language is English. 😜 5y
BeansPage HA! Hey opposites attract right? 😜 5y
CouronneDhiver Nice work! 5y
toric Ooo! Well dont you just look gorgeous missus! ❤❤❤😙 5y
tammysue You look lovely! 5y
GingerAntics @julesG this has become a master class is swearing in German. Proceed Professor. lol 5y
julesG @GingerAntics @TheReadingMermaid ? Teenagers these days no longer say 'Du Dummkopf!' they say 'Du Lauch!'. To stay with Zusak's filthy pigs "Schweinskerl/Schweinsmensch", it might be a Bavarian swear word, Liesl grows up near Munich and one cannot say that Bavarian German is spoken all over Germany. It's a class of its own. BTW Bavarians are sometimes frowned upon for being different and there are a lot of rude jokes about Bavarians. 5y
julesG Filthy pigs would be "Dreckschwein" that's more accurate than "Schweinsmensch". 5y
GingerAntics This just turned awesome!!! I thought I‘d heard something negative about Bavarians once in passing when I was in High School, but I could never get my German teacher to explain it. It almost sounds like an American southern drawl thing. You can be looked down on because supposedly it make you sound like an idiot...or a Jersey accent supposedly makes you a mob boss. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 5y
julesG There's this rude thing about Austrians and Bavarians, saying that Bavarians are the linking species between Austrians and Humans. I'm not going that far, I know a lot of lovely people in Austria and Bavaria and I've never had too much of a difficulty understanding them. There are a lot of strange customes in Bavaria, though. @GingerAntics 5y
julesG I've asked my Bavarian friends, they haven't heard Schweinsmensch before. 5y
batsy You have amazing skills! It looks lovely ❤️ 5y
julesG @batsy Thanks! I feel like a renaissance man - well, woman - with all this praise. 😉 5y
GingerAntics I suppose it‘s one of those “to each their own” thing. If it‘s tradition, I suppose why not. If they‘re not hurting anyone. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Youre totally a Renaissance woman!!! I a Jules-of-all-trades, if you will. lol 5y
julesG @GingerAntics Bavaria politically is strange, too. German parliament decides to take in refugees, Bavarian head of country says 'no way!'. Parliament decides Germany should reduce waste/greenhouse emissions/... Bavaria says 'wait a moment, we need an exception rule'... BUT I don't want to talk about politics. I'll keep investigating the Schweinsmensch conundrum. 5y
julesG @GingerAntics And I just googled Schweinsmensch - apparently scientists created a chimera of human and pig. 🙈🙈🙈 That's not what I was looking for. Not to mention that it is both fascinating and gross. 5y
batsy I agree with @GingerAntics ! You are 😁 5y
GingerAntics Ew!!! Yes...no...not what we wanted. 🙈🙈🙈 Although, that does make it work, interestingly but much differently, as an insult. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ 5y
julesG @batsy 😘 5y
julesG @GingerAntics But you'd have to explain it all the time. 5y
Awk_Word_Smith My mother was an Army brat so she was born on a US military base near Stuttgart. When I was growing up, her German nanny would visit it us in the summer and cook and teach us how to cuss in German because our mom refused. I still swear in German to this day. 5y
julesG @Awk_Word_Smith And hopefully with a Swabian accent, since the people around Stuttgart, and especially in the Black Forest area, speak Swabian German. Sounds like a completely different language from Bavarian German. 5y
Awk_Word_Smith @julesG Probably sounds more Like an American trying to speak German. 😂 5y
MinDea Awesome!!!!! You look gwoooooorgeous dawling!!!!!! 5y
julesG @MinDea Thank you! 😄 5y

Stealing @Caterina's idea, I am hoping to stick to this #TBR for next month. (just kidding, me and sticking to a TBR, that's quite hilarious)

There are #buddyreads and #ReadAlongs

#ZusakAMonth @MinDea @EadieB
#DraculBuddyRead @TheReadingMermaid
#OokBOokClub @TricksyTails
#12Littens12Books @LittleBug - Cinnamon and Gunpowder

Monsternanny and Odd I want to finish reading with my kids, both are in German actually.

EadieB Don‘t forget our Month of Kristin Hannah too! 5y
julesG @EadieB I have that one on the back burner. Don't know yet, whether I want/can do it, too. Plus, I need to check my personal library for a book by her, I cannot buy another book. I've spent my November and December book budget. 5y
bunny I love the way you're tracking this! It must be satisfying to be able to visualize your reading progress. 5y
julesG @bunny I hope so. It's a first for me. As I mentioned, I stole the idea from another Litten. 5y
MinDea This is such a great way to track all your books! 👏👏👏 5y

So this is my current reads pile. Didn't realise how long some of these were (like The Book Thief which I'm reading on kindle) until I updated my Goodreads...
Nothing like a good #chunkster challenge.

Naj The Book Thief is heartbreaking but so beautiful. 5y
laurieluna @Naj It's brilliant so far but I'm so nervous about where it's heading! 5y
julesG Are you reading ahead for #ZusakAMonth? 5y

laurieluna @julesG I wasn't even thinking about that when I started, but I have seen the posts. It's been on my kindle ages so finally decided to read it. Will definitely join in any discussions! 5y
