I Miss You When I Blink: Essays | Mary Laura Philpott
post image
Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A quick #reread before starting an #ARC of her new collection. Recycling my original review bc I‘m lazy:

Philpott reminds us that being an adult, even one who seemingly has everything, is hard and periodically sucks. Sometimes we have to step back and assess ourselves; tweak a few things or make drastic changes. As someone who has moved a lot, I understand that urge. I enjoyed these stories, but feel like they only scratch the surface.

Megabooks Can you tag me in your ARC review? (edited) 2y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Sure! Hoping to get to it before the end of the year. 🤞🏼 2y

#ToB22

This book is amazing. Tookie, a former felon who works in a bookstore In Minnesota owned by a certain author (so meta, right?) is the perfect protagonist in this meditation of trauma, belonging, grief and identity. The story takes place between November 2019 and November 2020 and perfectly captures that moment.

Back porch #bookview with a porter, a Novel on my Kindle, and the very wonderful new book by Kendra Tierney that I‘m ever hopeful about finishing before my reviews are due... but I‘m in a novel kind of mood. What‘s in your hands tonight?

Louise Currently reading a book that‘s close to your Catholic theme: 5y
sarahreinhard @Louise oh I lovvvvvve that one!!!! 5y
Louise It‘s my first novel by Willa Cather and certainly won‘t be the last! She‘s an amazing writer! 5y

Cortg The 8th book in the Outlander series! 5y
sarahreinhard @Louise I‘ve only read that one of hers but yes,!she is definitely amazing. Those images of the southwest are so striking and beautiful. 5y
sarahreinhard @Cortg oooo I‘ve never read any of those. Should I start? 5y
Cortg @sarahreinhard It‘s a commitment, for sure! I read one or two a year but I absolutely love them! It has a little bit of everything; romance, family, friendship, time travel, war, deception, adventure, you name it and it‘s probably there! 5y
sarahreinhard @Cortg ok I‘m going to tbr the first one! #sold! 5y
cmastfalk @Louise I love Willa Cather‘s books! I‘m reading the last book in J. Rode‘s dystopian YA trilogy Uncloaked and listening to The Whiskey Rebels, a historical novel I‘ve been meaning to get to forever! 5y
sarahreinhard @cmastfalk ooooooo tell me more about that! With that title, I‘m already googling... 5y
cmastfalk The Whiskey Rebels? Historical novel with two storylines I expect will intertwine. Disgraced Revolutionary War spy veteran searching for the missing husband of his former fiancé. Woman and her husband duped into sacrificing everything for uncleared land in western PA. Somehow they‘re all going to be part of the Whiskey Rebellion. The protagonist is wonderfully wry. 5y

This was the best audiobook I‘ve listened to in a long time.

Evvie Drake had her suit case packed and was leaving her emotionally abusive husband when she received the phone call that he had died in a car accident. This is a story about loss when you feel freed rather than grieving and the guilt that comes with that. It was fantastic.

Ashley_Nicoletto @megabooks its fantastic and feel good. I loved it. 5y

I‘m feeling this book...thanks for gifting it to me @TrishB ❤️ Seeing lots of reviews calling it quirky and odd - totally my #BuzzWords and Margaret Atwood called it an “eccentric charmer” #Sold 🙌🏻❣️

TrishB I loved its eccentricity 💕 5y
Bookzombie Carey was at our book festival this year and he is highly entertaining in person. I have this on my on my library stack to read, but have put Atwood ahead of him for month. Plus I‘m not getting in a lot print books right now. I hope you enjoy it! 5y

The History of Love | Nicole Krauss
post image

#MayMovieMagic The History of Love is a story within a story that traces the #OriginsOfLove for the curmudgeon Leo Gursky (whom I affectionately call #TheJewishOve ) A book that requires time and care as the dual stories are sometimes confusing. I loved Leo, so it bumped up my love for this book but it‘s not going to appeal to all readers. Still a book worth trying if you‘re seeking an unconventional love story.

Karisa Oh! I had almost forgotten this book. I loved it too! Jewish Ove is perfect description for him. Starts slow but pulls you right in. Gorgeous passages. 5y
Cinfhen Thanks so much @Karisa so many parts of Leo felt like a combination of Ove and my grandfather that I was totally smitten 🥰 5y
JennyM I tried to read this a few months ago, but it wasn‘t for me. And I was so sad not to love it - I really wanted to. It just seemed to pass my by 🙁 5y

CafeMom I loved the book from start to finish. Leo Gursky was my favorite character, every cantankerous ounce of him. I work in the field of gerontology so I felt at home with Leo. 5y
CarolynM What a fabulous quote. This book has never really appealed to me, but maybe I should look at it more closely before dismissing it completely. 5y
Cinfhen This book had a lot of stunning sentences @CarolynM I think you should give it a try❣️I‘m sorry it didn‘t pull you in @JennyM there were moments when I wasn‘t sure what I was reading but in the end it all came together for me. And I agree @CafeMom Leo Gursky is a wonderful character ❤️ 5y
Leftcoastzen I liked it a lot quietly intense. 5y

I enjoyed this collection quite a bit. The stories more tightly focused on a woman‘s experiences and inner dialogue were fantastic, and this applies to the majority of them, really. (Just a few meandered in ways that worked less well for me.) I was impressed by Rosenwaike‘s writing, and many observations and themes definitely rang true to my pregnancy/new mom experiences with my now-tween boys. I‘d certainly read more from her!

Earth Abides | George Rippey Stewart
Pickpick

Each time I read this book, I find something new to adore. I love the smart choices Stewart made with this book. He examines the fragility of civilization throughout the narrative. The story is a fun thought exercise. Although this story has a plot that has been done to death, I still think Earth Abides is one of the finest post-apocalyptic tales.

Fair warning: This book was written in 1949 and that‘s very obvious from the language used.

Geeklet @Megabooks I‘m glad! It really is a good book. ❤️ 5y

So very behind on my first attempt at a monthly photo challenge/prompt because things keep happening ? Anyway copying @madamereadsalot1 and doing a "dump post." The Girl Who Smiled Beads is on my TBR as is We Sold Our Souls (hear a lot of buzz about the author). I read & loved The Secret Life of Bees in HS and hope to reread someday. The Robert Frost poem is a favorite and Girl Wash Your Face is a self help book I might consider reading

Just After Sunset | Stephen King

I'm really behind on #sisforseptember but it's been chaos at work and busy when I get off. Anywho, here's a dump post to catch up. #sunset is on my tbr but haven't read yet. #smile is by one of my daughter's favorite authors. Her books are pretty cute. #secret is the one and only Mr. Potter! And I had to do some leg work for #sold but this is the closest I could find in relation to a book I've actually read or even heard of.

 @CaliforniaCay

Kayla.Adriena I'm so behind too! Adulting keeps happening 😫 6y
