#readaroundtheworld #libya Bookwormy has exited Litsy. I will miss her. This book is both a memoir of the author‘s search for his father who had been kidnapped by Qaddafi, but also a careful look at the politics surrounding Libya‘s historical revolutions, and finally how one grieves when one can not be sure of the death of the person you mourn. Slightly chronologically confusing but otherwise well written.

BarbaraBB I didn‘t know and am very sorry to hear that about Book wormy 1mo

Morning Sea | Margaret Mazzantini

Panpan

Quite an interesting book following the Mediterranean migrant crisis from colonialism to the present day. I read the English translation and the writing tended to be flowery when speaking on horrible circumstances. The book has numerous instances of Orientalist imagery too.

You could read novels written by survivors of the migrant crisis for a better picture. However, Mazzantini has an authorial right to be able to write this novel.

I found The Conscript on scribd. It is about an Eritrean conscript fighting on the Italian side in Libya during the Italo-Senussi war, when both #Eritrea and #Libya were part of the Italian colonial empire (although Libya was trying very hard not to be!) Originally written in Tingrinya in 1927 by Gebreyesus Hailu, an Eritrean author, making it an early African novel, and one not written in a colonial language.

Liz_M But did you enjoy it? I have this somewhere.. 7mo
Dilara @Liz_M I am enjoying it, but it's early days : I've reached page 40/83. Since the novella proper starts on page 25, that's not far: they're still on the boat and the action hasn't started yet. Not a fan of the introduction, however. 7mo

Running Man: A Memoir | Charlie Engle
post image
Pickpick

I was in the mood to read about ultramarathons for some reason the other day so I downloaded this audiobook from Scribd. I really enjoyed this book by Charlie Engle who went from addict to athlete to felon. It‘s brutally honest and interesting. His running took him all over the world so I‘m counting this for #ReadingTheAmericas #Ecuador and (still) #ReadingAfrica #Libya

Librarybelle This sounds very interesting! 11mo

The book for today. I was first introduced to Matar‘s writing through his book “A Month in Siena” and fell in love with how clearly and beautifully he wrote about the Italian hill town. Different topic, but this one - so far - is just as wonderfully written.

Mehso-so

6 years after, I read it again. This time I'll downgrade it to a so-so. At the time it was a soft pick. I'll be reading the rest of the series. Always interesting to see how things evolve.

It's always hard to judge a memoir...
I feel on the fence about this one: while I like Riad Sattouf's candid honesty and his childlike look on his surroundings, his father's behavior and some other behaviors in this book are quite hard to stomach.

This is a short memoir about a boy‘s following rumors to a better life in the “Land of the Whites,” and his journey from #Ghana to Spain. He doesn‘t know his actual age but when he undertook the trip he was probably between 13-17. Among 46 people abandoned in the Sahara by smugglers, he was 1 of 6 who survived walking 3 weeks out of the desert. He spent the most time in #Libya trying to make enough money to make it to Europe, which he finally ⬇️

Texreader accomplished. Along the way he spent significant time in prison or detention camps, and was almost raped twice. Why did he go? Having no access to media & no education, he acted only on rumors. A skilled auto mechanic at a tender age, he believed he‘d be welcomed with open arms. He was not welcomed anywhere in Africa, and more often than not he was conned. He learned about racism in Libya and how women were poorly treated. But two women likely ⬇️ 1y
Texreader Saved his life in Spain where he was allowed to stay but had no ability to understand how to get help, sleeping on the streets. One of the women and her husband adopted him! He got his master‘s degree & started his own non-profit to educate children in Ghana. He knew all the horror he suffered was because of a lack of education and access to the world and so he is giving back. This book helps explain what motivates refugees. #readingafrica2022 1y
