Remembering Fred Rogers on the twentieth anniversary of his passing. He was such an integral part of my childhood - one of my first teachers. It‘s because of public television like Mister Rogers‘ Neighborhood, Sesame Street, and Reading Rainbow that I became a voracious reader.

Thank you, Mister Rogers, for creating a space safe for children to learn and imagine. It‘s you we like.

CBee My mom always said I learned to read from Sesame Street. And will always be thankful to and for Mr. Rogers ♥️♥️ 13mo
AnnR ♥️🤗 As a TV personality/role model for children, his gentle demeanor and kindness are greatly missed. There is no substitute. 13mo

ElizaMarie I absolutely love Mr. Rogers. I really felt we (or I) needed him at the start of the pandemic. He made everyone feels so calm and just heard. The movies about him are total tear jerkers! I just love love love him (and Grover and Reading Rainbow). 13mo

Pickpick

Started the year with an old childhood favorite.

It‘s been nice to remember the books I loved before I was really into reading.

Amiable Oh, I loved these books so much when I was a kid. 🥰 3y
Skyrimir I‘ve always loved these covers. Mine are falling apart, but I refuse to get newer editions! 3y
TiminCalifornia @Amiable @Skyrimir Same here. These were great. The Swiftly Tilting Planet cover sure has that early ‘80s vibe going. It‘s dated like me! 3y
CornerLibrarian I am always amazed that she was 41 when this book was published and had been turned down so many times by publishers! 3y
Amiable @TiminCalifornia I‘m pretty sure I still my ‘80s-era copy that has that exact cover! 😀 3y

Judy Blume. Funny these are still on my shelves. I actually didn‘t like Otherwise Known As Sheila the Great. Then Again Maybe I Won‘t left me confused and angry. Took me a long time to figure out why.

This thin pamphlet must have been a novelty gift from the Milwaukee Optical Manufacturing Company decades ago. There are no author or picture credits. As a child I loved looking at the pictures and reading other countries‘ Christmas traditions.

This is the book that made me want to live in a city. Also I remembered the acronym ISAAC forever. The Independent Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club.

First epistolary and to this day I don‘t think I have read a book comprised of letters or journals I didn‘t like. Even if the premise doesn‘t sound particularly interesting, I‘ll add an epistolary novel to my TBR stack!

In one story a boy wins a horse in a contest and takes it to live in his city apartment. At 7 years old I tried to use this to counter Mom‘s assertions that a horse is “too expensive” and we “don‘t have a place to keep a horse”.

TheSpineView I bugged my parents to death and they gave me in. Later they told me they were afraid I would lose interest after they spent a bunch of money. Now here I am 50 years later still have a horse and ride regularly. 3y
TiminCalifornia @TheSpineView They are such noble looking creatures. Love having animals in my life though I never did get a horse. 3y
