Finding Wonders
Finding Wonders: Three Girls Who Changed Science | Jeannine Atkins
16 posts | 10 read | 39 to read
A gorgeously written novel in verse about three girls in three different time periods who grew up to become groundbreaking scientists. Maria Merian was sure that caterpillars were not wicked things born from mud, as most people of her time believed. Through careful observation she discovered the truth about metamorphosis and documented her findings in gorgeous paintings of the life cycles of insects. More than a century later, Mary Anning helped her father collect stone sea creatures from the cliffs in southwest England. To him they were merely a source of income, but to Mary they held a stronger fascination. Intrepid and patient, she eventually discovered fossils that would change peoples vision of the past. Across the ocean, Maria Mitchell helped her mapmaker father in the whaling village of Nantucket. At night they explored the starry sky through his telescope. Maria longed to discover a new cometand after years of studying the night sky, she finally did. Told in vibrant, evocative poems, this stunning novel celebrates the joy of discovery and finding wonder in the world around us.

💫 Maria Mitchell won an award for finding a new comet 💫

“...it seems strange to be honored for one instance of seeing, rather than the thousands of nights on the roof, memorizing what‘s constant in the sky so she could recognize change when it came: Comet 1847 VI.”

This is a middle grade book in verse about three scientists: Maria Sibylla Merian, Mary Anning, and Maria Mitchell. I would recommend it to readers of all ages!

Two gorgeous books I like to recommend to customers about #girlsinscience. I love that it's a question that I am asked often; I hate that it's a question I have to be asked often. #backtoreading

charissharpe I picked up Women in Science this week, looking forward to making my way through it. 7y

#BackToReading #day7 #GirlsInScience I've posted about this gorgeous little book before, it's not only beautiful to look at but it also tells the amazing stories of 3 female pioneers in different fields of science, plus it's told in prose! Maria Merian studied insects & painted beautiful illustrations of metamorphosis, Mary Anning collected fossils & changed the views on history & Maria Mitchell was fascinated with the Stars & found a new comet.

robinb I could stare at this for hours....sigh. ❤️❤️❤️ 7y

Catching up on reviews!

This an absolutely beautiful book filled with history, information and powerful girls!
I absolutely loved how quick and easy to read this book was but it was also very powerful being non fiction stories. I also really enjoyed that this book was written in verse, I have never read in verse before and I enjoyed it!

Have you read this book? If so what did you think?!

#Riotgrams #day20 #CelestialSolstice This is a beautiful little book about three hardly known female scientists who made discoveries that furthered their fields without any acknowledgement. Maria Merian studied insects & made gorgeous detailed paintings, Mary Anning found fossils amongst the stones near her coastal home which furthered scientific study & Maria Mitchell helped her father make celestial maps in Nantucket, and discovered a new comet.

Jess_Read_This I just love this book cover! 7y

#feistyfeb #day18 #historicalheroines There's three historical heroines in this book. Maria Merian, who discovered the truth about metamorphosis in insects & painted it, Mary Anning, who discovered fossils that would change our view of the past & Maria Mitchell, who's fascination with stars led her to discover a new comet. Heroines of science all. This book about their lives is so beautiful, and it's written in prose.

TrishB And a gorgeous cover 💗 7y

Looking for a book for my daughter's friend who is turning 8 and announced, on the second day I knew her -- she was three, that she was going to be an astrophysicist when she grows up, and this book pops out at me!

It was shelved in the very wrong place for the book but the very right place to catch my attention! I knew right away it was the right book!

And yes, I got a copy for my daughter as well 😊

I received this in my December book subscription box and finally got around to reading it yesterday. It was my first time reading a book written in verse and I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it ! This isn't a book I would normally pick up myself but I'm glad I got it 😊
Also, how pretty is this sleeve 💖
