A Climate of Fear | Fred Vargas
17 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
THE NEW INSPECTOR ADAMSBERG NOVEL A woman is found murdered in her bathtub, and the murder made to look like a suicide. A strange symbol is found near the body. Then a second victim is discovered, who was also part of a group of tourists on a doomed expedition to Iceland ten years earlier. How are these deaths, and rumours of an Icelandic demon, linked to the secretive Association for the Study of the Writings of Maximilien Robespierre? And what does the mysterious symbol signify? Commissaire Adamsberg is about to find out.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Day 160th

Join the fun if you want!

I used to read a lot of Fred Vargas' books and for a time forgot I liked her style. Adamsberg is a strange kind of policeman that you can not forget... I'm glad the library had it in epub format.

What to say about this book. Commissaire Adamsberg is at his most infuriating vagueness, on two seemingly disparate cases that have him chasing an itch all the way to Iceland. I love Adamsberg, but that is not the case with all of his subordinates. As with this entire series, it is one of the oddest books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Met up with a couple of LibraryThing friends this afternoon at Social, here in Ottawa, for drinks and snacks. I had a variant of the Bee's Knees: Ungava gin, Earl Grey honey, and lavender bitters. Our snacks were squash fritters, mushroom flatbread, and salad with seared ahi tuna ( @DebinHawaii , don't tell Max 😹). Afterward we went to Librairie du Soleil and I bought the tagged book 😄

Literary_Siren Ottawa, Kansas?? 5y
rabbitprincess @Literary_Siren Nope, Ontario 😊 5y
Reviewsbylola You had me at lavender bitters. 😍 5y

Literary_Siren Blah! I should have known you wouldn‘t find a delicious drink like that in Kansas. 5y
wanderinglynn That looks amazing! 😋 I love Bee‘s Knees. And lavender bitters—fantastic! 5y
rabbitprincess @Reviewsbylola I've never had any kind of bitters before, to my knowledge, but this one was pretty good. @Literary_Siren Not until you assemble it 😉 @wanderinglynn I liked that it was a big round glass to encourage sipping -- it was worth savouring! 5y
rwmg The drink sounds interesting, though I can't quite imagine Adamsberg drinking it 5y
rabbitprincess @rwmg Hee hee! What would his preferred drink be? 5y
rwmg I think he'd stick with beer or a house wine. I can imagine Danglard being more adventurous so long as it's got alcohol in it. 5y
DebinHawaii Max would be so jealous of your ahi! 🤣😻🐟 5y

Vargas is on top form in this mystery involving an ill-fated trip to Iceland, a group of Revolution re-enactors, and a tame wild boar called Eric.

Clever, like always with Vargas. Vintage Vargas with a hint of supernatural that you can dismiss or embrace. I loved how Vargas never takes her reader for granted. As a reader you get the hints she lays out and slowly, slowly you realize where she's going and well... read and see. #julyinfrench

CarolynM I like her books a lot, but in translation I'm afraid. 6y

Happy 🇨🇦 Day.
July comes with me reading only French books. It's the time of the year where I catch up with my TRP of French books. My usual ratio is 2:1 English to French. I would rather read in the original edition or if not possible a good translation in French which can be hard to find for books translated from English. Vargas in well on its way to be an excellent one. #frenchbooks #julyinfrench

Sace Cool! 6y
rabbitprincess J'essaie de faire la même chose (lire des romans français dans la langue originale) ? Bonne fête du Canada! 6y

writerlibrarian @mcipher Italian design. I just fell in love with it in a few seconds. I knew I had to have it. I waited for three months to be delivered. They only had the showroom chair when I bought it. They had gotten just a few because they didn't know if it would sell... well it did. 😁 6y
Cinfhen Great photo and wonderful month of posts!!! Thanks for the bday wishes 💗 6y

This woman. NONE of her other series entice me. But the French detective? I can't not suck them down. He's what I wish I could be.

I was tagged by @tournevis

1- Eclectic. I read romance both historical and contemporary; mysteries, literature, adventure and sci-fi. Non fiction is my jam too. I can read ancient Greek history as well as Roman and a hockey romance.
2- Fred Vargas. i have all her books and ration them so I have at least one or two I haven't read.
3- Horror and violence against women type of book. i won't read Criminal Minds type of books anymore.

writerlibrarian 4- See 1. I read or try almost every genre or type.
5- I have a few but Claire Messud's The Emperor Children is right up there. Watching paint dry is better.

Continuing my goal to read more books in translation. French crime novel. A series of murders with links to Iceland. I don't know -- look at the short description I think I HAVE to read this. @penguinusa

JPeterson I love the sound of this! I just might have to add it to my tbr. 😊 7y
RadicalReader @BethFishReads what's the purpose of reading a translated book? Isn't it still in English? 7y
BethFishReads @RadicalReader well yes it's in English but translated books broaden my perspective beyond the English-speaking world. 7y

Spannend und verstörend wie jeder Adamsberg Krimi. Ich konnte ihn fast nicht aus der Hand legen und jetzt hab ich ein Schlaf Defizit. Ein muss für jeden Adamsberg Fan. ?
