La Princesse des glaces | Camilla Lckberg

Pickpick

Took a week to get through mostly because it was too hot to read at night. Okay but not wow I want to read the next one right now. I'll eventually read the next one. The mystery is in the end too easily put together by the detective, lots of deus ex machina things to get him there. I would have liked the plot to continue to focus on Erica's looking for clues instead of Patrick and the whole romance thing just left me meh. #julyinfrench

Too hot, too humid. It's sticky, I have a persistent headache due to the humidity. Not ideal reading conditions. I'm half done with the Läckberg, it's good, slow but good. July is a big weeding month at the library hence I now have passable copies of two Nothomb and a Cuban/Miami mystery in my TRP. Is it October yet? I miss hockey. #julyinfrench

Le Voyage d'hiver | Amelie Nothomb

Mehso-so

A less than average Nothomb. There are a few sparkling sentences here and there but the whole narrative is flat, non imaginative and nothing we haven't seen, read or heard. Woe is my white male condition, I'll take all with me because I got rejected. Maybe there is a second degree to this but I don't feel it. Good thing it was short. #julyinfrench

Clever, like always with Vargas. Vintage Vargas with a hint of supernatural that you can dismiss or embrace. I loved how Vargas never takes her reader for granted. As a reader you get the hints she lays out and slowly, slowly you realize where she's going and well... read and see. #julyinfrench

CarolynM I like her books a lot, but in translation I'm afraid. 6y

Takes a while to start but once it does, it never lets go. A tightrope act where one false move and everything goes boum. Riveting. Print in French. The translation was good. #julyinfrench

WhatThePuck My first encounter with Tana French was her book In The Woods which was So-So. I had already bought this book as a Kindle deal and waited a year after reading In The Woods. This book is by far better! I will definitely be reading more of her books! 6y
writerlibrarian I had the same reaction. I didn't like In the Woods, I could objectively see it was well written but I kept hoping for an unreliable narrator which it wasn't. But this one, wow. It takes a while to start but when it does you are just sucked in until the end. (edited) 6y

Happy 🇨🇦 Day.
July comes with me reading only French books. It's the time of the year where I catch up with my TRP of French books. My usual ratio is 2:1 English to French. I would rather read in the original edition or if not possible a good translation in French which can be hard to find for books translated from English. Vargas in well on its way to be an excellent one. #frenchbooks #julyinfrench
