Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders
Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders: A Novel | Julianna Baggott
22 posts | 31 read | 143 to read
New York Times NOTABLE BOOK OF 2015"A mesmerizing tale of star-crossed love and of the dark secrets in a fracturing family . . . This novel is so full of wonders that it leaves you haunted, amazed, and, like every great read, irrevocably changed."--Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of You The reclusive Harriet Wolf, revered author and family matriarch, has a final confession-a love story. Years after her death, as her family comes together one last time, the mystery of Harriet's life hangs in the balance. Does the truth lie in the rumored final book of the series that made Harriet a world-famous writer, or will her final confession be lost forever? Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders tells the moving story of the unforgettable Wolf women in four distinct voices: the mysterious Harriet, who, until now, has never revealed the secrets of her past; her fiery, overprotective daughter, Eleanor; and her two grown granddaughters--Tilton, the fragile yet exuberant younger sister, who's become a housebound hermit, and Ruth, the older sister, who ran away at sixteen and never looked back. When Eleanor is hospitalized, Ruth decides it's time to do right by a pact she made with Tilton long ago: to return home and save her sister. Meanwhile, Harriet whispers her true life story to the reader. It's a story that spans the entire twentieth century and is filled with mobsters, outcasts, a lonesome lion, and a home for wayward women. It's also a tribute to her lifelong love of the boy she met at the Maryland School for Feeble-minded Children. Harriet Wolf's Seventh Book of Wonders, Julianna Baggott's most sweeping and mesmerizing novel yet, offers a profound meditation on motherhood and sisterhood, as well as on the central importance of stories. It is a novel that affords its characters that rare chance we all long for--the chance to reimagine the stories of our lives while there's still time.

I‘m not sure how to review this other than say it‘s a fantastic, quirky, funny and sad gem of a book. There‘s a lost manuscript, a crazy literary family, and an extraordinary life. Loved it!

Cinfhen Sounds promising! 4mo
JennyM @Cinfhen it‘s been sat on my TBR for about 3 years - I thought it was brilliant. Safe travels lovely. Have a great trip xx (edited) 4mo

This book has been lingering on my TBR for 3 years!! I wish I‘d picked it up earlier - it is fantastic so far ❤️

TrishB I‘ve read her fantasy series which was great, didn‘t realise she‘d written anything else. 4mo
JennyM @TrishB I‘ve never read anything by her but this is brilliant. She‘s got the balance between humour and heartbreak just right! I‘ll definitely read more by her (edited) 4mo
TrishB Have stacked 👍🏻 this sounds completely different to her dystopian, fantasy stuff. 4mo

I loved this book! One of the best I‘ve read in awhile! A heartbreaking love story, told by four different narrators, each with their own very unique personality. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book. I loved that it is set in the East Coast, from where I‘m from, and the towns were all familiar. The relationships between mothers and daughters that are explored in this were heartwarming and heartbreaking. This really was a great book.

Redwritinghood This was one of my favorites from 2016. 💕💕 2y

Now that all the #booktoteswap matches are up I thought I‘d put some info up too in case my #booktotestalker 😹 doesn‘t want to tell me who they are and I will just put a reminder here about where to find my important lists!
😸 I‘m on Goodreads as kamoorephoto and usually keep up to date with what I own and have on my TBR 😸 You can also stalk me on Twitter and IG where I am romans_mama (I‘m a cat photographer) 💓💓💓

kamoorephoto I‘ll also make sure that my to-read books on here are ones that I do not own; on Goodreads though, I have an ongoing wishlist and you can see what I do own 👍🏼☺️ 2y

It took a while for me to embrace the characters in this novel but it was worth it. The women in the story are coming to terms with their past and working through the damaged relationships between the generations.

I loved the language of this book and the fantastical stories of both the characters in Wolf's fictional books and the stories of the Wolf character and those of her family members.

Just started this, written by a fellow Delawarean!

SusanCoulby This would've been better as two books, one about Harriet and one about Eleanor. 4y
