A cold, windy, Illinois day, brings me to my favorite room. I hope to finish the Orpahn Mother, but like the previous few day, attitudes are bad, and interfering with reading. 🍃📖
1. My son reading his science homework.

3. The heat has been on for a couple of weeks, in my Illinois home.

5. Devil in The White City. In my opinion there was too much architecture and not enough true crime.

bailedI truly hate to do this but I have made it to 42% and it is just such a drag for me. None of the characters seem to jump out at me and the book itself seems flat and two dimensional. I may give it another go once I've had a little break.
September took a sharp nose dive in terms of good reads. 🙁 I read only 6 or so books and #bestreadsofseptember #somethingforsept would go to The Orphan Mother with maybe an honourable mention to The Ballroom by Anna Hope. Really hoping my October reading is filled with great reads!

The Orphan Mother is set in 1867; two years after the end of America‘s Civil War and solidly in the reconstruction era. At this point in time, the country, and especially the southern states, were poised on the blade of a knife. The hope of the newly emancipated former slaves warred with the intransigence of their former masters, each seeking to pull the country down a different path. . . .
pickI liked this book. I found Hicks take on a post Civil War town and the relationships between the different races interesting but not very believable. While the two main characters were very well developed, I found many of the other characters lacking in that aspect. Easy to follow, mystery plot with a sense of bloody justice. Thanks Netgalley.

pickExcellent! I have The Widow of the South on my shelf and it features many of the characters here in The Orphan Mother, including Mariah, so I'll want to get to it soon!
The next book on my list is... Taking a quick break from #readingthrough30years to knock this one out. The Birthday Challenge is almost done but hoping to really enjoy this one.
Finally - the promised rainy day (all day) has arrived. Going to enjoy with my cuddly companion.

Had to pick up Orphan Mother from the library (hold was ready) and A Gentleman in Moscow was just sitting there...couldn't leave that sitting alone! Came with me to a good home. 😂
