Naked at Lunch
Naked at Lunch: A Reluctant Nudist's Adventures in the Clothing-Optional World | Mark Smith
19 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
People have been getting naked in public for reasons other than sex for centuries. But as novelist and narrative journalist Mark Haskell Smith shows in Naked at Lunch, being a nudist is more complicated than simply dropping trou. Nonsexual social nudism, as its called, rose to prominence in the late nineteenth century. Intellectuals, outcasts, and health nuts from Victorian England and colonial India to Belle poque France and Gilded Age Manhattan disrobed and wrote manifestos about the joys of going clothing-free. From stories of ancient Greek athletes slathered in olive oil to the millions of Germans who fled the cities for a naked frolic during the Weimar Republic to American soldiers given naturist magazines by the Pentagon in the interest of preventing sexually transmitted diseases, Haskell Smith uncovers nudisms amusing and provocative past. Naked at Lunch is equal parts cultural history and gonzo participatory journalism. Coated in multiple layers of high SPF sunblock, Haskell Smith dives into the nudist world today. He publicly disrobes for the first time in Palm Springs, observes the culture of family nudism in a clothing-free Spanish town, and travels to the largest nudist resort in the world, a hedonists paradise in the south of France. He reports on San Franciscos controversial ban on public nudity, participates in a week of naked hiking in the Austrian Alps, and caps off his adventures with a week on the Big Nude Boat, a Caribbean cruise full of nudists.

keithmalek @BookNAround There's two different covers, and I'm reading the one with the boring cover. 5y

Day 7: book set in your country. Since there are a ton of books based in the US and in CA , I picked one that's set in LA and talks about neighborhoods ive been to. This was a book I got in a swap here and I'm loving it so far. I love learning about various lifestyles. Also there are various quotes that really speak to me especially this one about chasing a taco truck. #juneinbooks18 #juneitselectrifying #tellmeaboutitstud

I am excited to read #WhenTheyCallYouATerrorist and #NakedatLunch! 📚

Naked at Lunch was recommended by @Liberty on her #AllTheBooks podcast. 🤗 “Coated in multiple layers of high SPF sunblock, Haskell Smith dives into the nudist world. He publicly disrobes for the first time in Palm Springs, observes the culture of family nudism in a clothing-free Spanish town, and travels to the largest nudist resort in the world in the south of France.” #TBR

AlaMich That sounds fun! The book about the nudists, I mean...😊 6y
Jess7 It‘s a good balance: something light and fun and then something heavy and tough! @AlaMich - but mostly they‘re pictured together because both holds came in at the same time from the #library! (edited) 6y
Prairiegirl_reading I‘m having the exact same experience with my two Libby holds that came in together, except mine are on audio. When they call you a terrorist and courage is contagious. The first is so difficult to hear. So important though. 6y
BookNAround Naked at Lunch is hilarious. Hope you enjoy it. 6y
Liberty Close! It was Rebecca. ☺️ 6y

My new job requires a lot of travel... this Hampton Inn is staring to feel quite familiar!

Karkar Oh I do not miss traveling so much for work. It got to the point where it was like the hotel was like hey how are you been a week or so.... 7y

On this Small Business Saturday, I went to my local indie store, Park Road Books, and found this on the shelf. With a front and back cover like this, how could I not buy it, bring it home, and start it immediately? This will probably be my last book for Nonfiction November. *Please note I will not be reading this in the nude (at least as far as you all know).

BookishMarginalia Great cover(s)! 7y
BookBabe Omg, you should've seen my face as I just saw the cover on the left! 😳 7y

kristina_with_a_k Stiff is good! I'm stacking Naked at Lunch because with a title like that, it has to be good. 8y
